  • This paper introduces the kinematic calibration method to improve the positioning accuracy of a parallel mechanism. Since all the actuators in the parallel mechanism are controlled simultaneously toward the target position, the volumetric errors originated from each motion element are too complicated. Therefore, the exact evaluation of the error sources of each motion element and its calibration is very important in terms of volumetric errors. In the calibration processes, the measurement of the errors between commands and trajectories is necessary in advance. To do this, a digitizer was used for the data acquisition in 3 dimensional space rather than arbitrary planar error data. After that, the optimization process that was used for reducing the motion errors were followed. Consequently, Levenberg-Marquart algorithm as well as the error data acquisition method turned out effective for the purpose of the calibration of the parallel mechanism.

  • Reverse engineering is a technique that helps designers to quickly generate computer interpretable data from existing physical objects. It can be used for generating CAD data from a mechanical part of high precision, or generating computer animation characters from physical mock-ups. We developed a low precision reverse engineering system that is composed of surface/solid generation software and a contact type commercial 3D digitizer. A unique point sampling procedure has been devised to easily form solid topology from the sampled data. It was also shown that STL data for rapid prototyping was successfully generated from the solid.

  • This paper designs, in the teleoperation task, the world coordinate system by the functional analysis of each of the robot joint so that the human operator performs easily the task. Also, it constructs the heuristic rules of the equal motion line coordinates for the position and the posture control of the robot within the knowledge base so that the robot hand reaches-possibly in any position of the robot's work space. As shown in the result of the experiments. the coordinate reading is easy because the work station is displayed to the high resolution by using the superimposer of the motion analysing computer system. Also. the task burden of the human operator reduces and the error recovery time reduces because the coordinates of the object is obtained just by touch using the digitizer.

  • To implement a high-precision lightning tracking system utilizing TDOA measurements, high-speed data acquisition and precise timing synchronization between ground sensors should be achieved. At the same time, considering the size of digitizer's memory, the data memory needs to be managed so that only the sampled data around the occurrence of stepped leader pulse is stored. This paper presents a detection-and-acquisition system for lightning signals that is the main equipment of ground sensor in lightning tracking system. GPS clock module is used to get precise timing synchronization and the 500MHz high speed digitizer is employed. In order to detect the leading edge of the lightning pulse and save the sampled data and its timing, lightning detection module is implemented and multi-record method is employed in the proposed system. Field experiment results show that the proposed system can detect and save the lightning signal efficiently.

  • In this paper, we propose the basic measurement method of a 3D digitizer using a CCD camera in detail. In the localization measurement with a CCD camera, the effect of the background light and the sensitivity consideration are always problems in realizing a high precision. In this research, a new measurement principle is proposed in which the pulse compression technique known in radar is used to eliminate the effect of background light even under a low intensity light source, and the coordinate values on the CCD camera image plane are determined accurately. From the quantitative evaluation of the S/N ratio improvement and the fundamental experiment, it is verified that a substantial improvement in the S/N ratio is realized for both the background noise and the pixel noise and that a resolution of less than the pixel is sufficiently possible.

  • Background: As neutron fields are always accompanied by gamma rays, it is essential to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays in the detection of neutrons. Neutrons and gamma rays can be separated by pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods. Recently, we performed characterization of a stilbene scintillator detector and an EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector with a high-speed digitizer DT5730 and investigated optimized PSD variables for both detectors. This study is for providing a basis for developing fast neutron/gamma-ray dual-particle imager. Materials and Methods: We conducted PSD experiments using stilbene scintillator and EJ-301 liquid scintillator and evaluated neutron and gamma ray discriminability of each PSD method with a $^{137}Cs$ gamma source and a $^{252}Cf$ neutron source. We implemented digital signal processing techniques to apply two PSD methods - the charge comparison (CC) method and the constant time discrimination (CTD) method - to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays. We tried to find optimized PSD variables giving the best discriminability in a given experimental condition. Results and Discussion: For the stilbene scintillator detector, the charge comparison method and the constant time discrimination method both delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.7. For the EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector, both PSD methods delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.79. With the same PSD variables, PSD performance was excellent in $300{\pm}100keVee$, $500{\pm}100keVee$, and $700{\pm}100keVee$ energy regions. This result shows that we can achieve an effective discrimination of neutrons from gamma rays using these scintillator detector systems. Conclusion: We applied both PSD methods to a stilbene and a liquid scintillator and optimized the PSD performance represented by FOM values. We observed a good separation performance of both scintillators combined with a high-speed digitizer and digital PSD. These results will provide reference values for the dual-particle imager we are developing, which can image both fast neutrons and gamma rays simultaneously.

  • Conventionally the subjective assessment for measuring the human sensibility is always performed after an experiment or a stimulus is terminated. This aftermath method can not. exactly, reflect the human sensibility which is produced at the moment of the presentation of the stimulus. In the present study, a new real-time subjective assessment system is developed. The system is composed of two parts: the sensibility input part and the sensibility evaluation part. The sensibility input part gets the values, which are recorded on the input board using pen-mouse, from the evaluation of each subject on his/her own subjective sensibility for the stimulus. The sensibility evaluation part displays the level of the pleasantness and arousal on one and two dimension in real time. An experiment on the design of the input board that any subject can easily and exactly evaluates one's own sensibility is also included in this study. The system can be used for evaluating the human subjective sensibility in real time, and, also, can be applied to other subjective assessment tests that require real time evaluation.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to measure the accuracy of adjustable dental impression trays by a scanning laser three-dimensional digitizer. Materials and Methods: Metal stock tray and adjustable stock trays were used for 40 stone casts(10 casts each) duplicated a resin master model of mandible and maxilla. The type IV dental stone was poured in a allginate impressions and allowed to set for one hour. The casts were digitized using an optical digitizer. The distance between the reference points were measured and analyzed on the graphic image of 3-D graphic software (CATIA version 5.0). The statistical significance of the differences between the groups was determined by a two-way ANOVA. Results: There were no significant differences between the accuracies of the adjustable stock tray and the master model except anterior arch width of the upper arch and the diagonal arch length and arch length(one side) of the lower arch. Conclusion: The adjustable stock trays showed clinically acceptable accuracies of the study casts produced by them.
