  • A plastic zone size is regarded as a measure of material resistance, and also it determines the fracture behavior. The importance of estimating or measuring the plastic zone size cannot be too emphasized. In this article, SDSP(Stereo Digital Speckle Photography) is examined as a new techniques to measure the plastic zone developed in a ductile metal. This technique is simple, vibration free and non-contact, and measures simultaneously in-plane displacements as well as out-of plane displacements like the side necking. Experimental results for a CT specimen are presented to demonstrate the accuracy in comparison with those obtained by recrystallization technique and finite element analysis.

  • To ensure driver safety, high-strength steel pipes are utilized in the chassis and internal structures design of automobiles. ERW(electric resistance welding) pipes, fabricated through welding at joints using electrical resistance, form a Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) during the welding process. Due to characteristics such as increased hardness and reduced ductility compared to the base material, HAZ poses challenges in finite element analysis (FEA) for pipe shapes. In this study, for FEA considering HAZ properties, mechanical properties were measured through uniaxial tensile testing and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques after specimen fabrication. These measurements were validated using reverse engineering methods. Furthermore, hardness measurements and gaussian functions were employed to ascertain the hardness distribution within the HAZ, serving as a basis for subdividing the HAZ and modeling the pipe shape. To validate the effectiveness of the HAZ modeling approach, models were interpreted incorporating only base material properties and models incorporating average-calculated HAZ properties. Comparative analysis was performed, revealing that the model subdividing the HAZ based on hardness measurements closely approximated experimental values. This validation offered a methodology for HAZ modeling in FEA.

  • The polymerization shrinkage behavior of dimethacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) and silorane-based composite (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) used for dental composite restorations was measured using digital image correlation method. The stress distribution on the surface of specimen was calculated by finite element analysis with equivalent elastic modulus and was compared with the measured shrinkage distribution. Camera images were monitored by a CCD camera during and after the irradiation of light. As a result of the DIC analysis, a non-uniform shrinkage distribution was observed in both composite resins, and the resin core inside the ring specimen had free flowability, leading to in greater shrinkage strain than the resin/ring interfacial region. It was observed that as the distance from the center of the resin increased, the radial average shrinkage strain decreased. The radial average shrinkage strain during light irradiation occurred to be 33% for P90 and 57% for AP-X of the entire strain at the end of the test. The shrinkage behavior of P90 and AP-X was measured to be significantly different from each other during light irradiation. In the resin near the resin/ring interface, it was confirmed that the tensile strain rapidly formed to increase after light irradiation, causing a tensile stressed, interface weak.

  • In this study, it is evaluated for fracture toughness to analyze crack resistance properties of particulate reinforced composite propellant. Fracture toughness test using WST specimen is conducted by temperature conditions from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-60^{\circ}C$. Evaluation method for fracture toughness calculated using an equation suggested by ASTM E399 with linear elastic fracture mechanics. From these result, splitting loads and stress intensity factors of propellant increase according to decrease of test temperature. Also, the strain fields of specimen surface using digital image correlation increase as temperature decreased from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$, but it sharply decreases at $-60^{\circ}C$ because of brittle behavior.

  • In this study, crack resistance is evaluated by the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) using a wedge splitting test (WST) on a viscoelastic particulate reinforced composite based on an HTPB binder. Generally, CTOA, as a function of crack extension, is used in order to determinate fracture resistance and has a steady state relative angle. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used to measure the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and crack extension for the critical crack tip opening angle (CTOAc). In these results, the CTOAc value of a particulate reinforced composite tends to approach a constant angle after a small amount of crack extension. The CTOAc value increases with decreasing temperature, from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$. These CTOAc values may be used to measure fracture mechanics parameters for particulate reinforced composite.

  • This paper aims at examining the effects of sustained load and elevated temperature on the time-dependent deformation of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets bonded to concrete as well as the pull-off strength of single-lap shear specimens after the sustained loading period using digital images. Elevated temperature during the sustained loading period resulted in increased slip of the CFRP composites, whereas increased curing time of the polymer resin prior to the sustained loading period resulted in reduced slip. Pull-off tests conducted after sustained loading period showed that the presence of sustained load resulted in increased pull-off strength and interfacial fracture energy. This beneficial effect decreased with increased creep duration. Based on analysis of digital images, results on strain distributions and fracture surfaces indicated that stress relaxation of the epoxy occurred in the 30 mm closest to the loaded end of the CFRP composites during sustained loading, which increased the pull-off strength provided the failure locus remained mostly in the concrete. For longer sustained loading duration, the failure mode of concrete-CFRP bond region can change from a cohesive failure in the concrete to an interfacial failure along the concrete/epoxy interface, which diminished part of the strength increase due to the stress relaxation of the adhesive.

  • In this study, the effectiveness and applicability of a newly designed Compact CNS shear box for conducting direct shear tests on jointed rock specimens were investigated. CNS joint shear tests were conducted on jointed rocks with Artificially generated roughness while varying the fracture surface roughness coefficient and initial normal stress conditions. In addition, displacement data were validated by Digital image correlation analysis, fracture patterns were observed, and comparative analysis was conducted with previously studied shear behavior prediction models. Furthermore, the accuracy of the displacement data was confirmed through DIC analysis, the fracture patterns were observed, and the shear properties obtained from the tests were compared with existing models that predict shear behavior. The findings exhibited a strong correlation with specific established empirical models for predicting shear behavior. Furthermore, the potential linkage between the characteristics of shear behavior and fracture patterns was deliberated. In conclusion, the CNS shear box was shown to be applicable and effective in providing data on the shear characteristics of the joint.

  • Local deformations in back filling materials of two sands and one glass bead with different particle shapes behind a rigid retaining wall were studied. Two kinds of boundary conditions were compared: active wall translation and active rotation of the wall about its toe. Effect of the speed of active wall translation was also investigated. The digital image correlation method was used to analyze local deformation developments inside the materials. Test results showed that particle shape and density mainly influence the inclination angle and width of the shear band. The general shear band pattern is strongly dependent on the wall movement mode, while it was little influenced by particle shape. Within a limited range of wall speed in this study, shear band became wider and local deformation became larger with increase of wall speed.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation about visualization of bulging development of geosynthetic-encased stone column (GESC) based on the digital image correlation (DIC) technique and transparent soil. Visual model tests on GESC and ordinary stone column (OSC) were carried out. In order to delete the warping effect resulting from transparent soil and experiment setup, a modification for experiment results was performed. The bulging development process of the GESC and the displacement field of the surrounding soil were measured. By comparing with the existing experimental and theoretical results, it demonstrates that the model test system developed for studying the continuous bulging development of GESC is suitable. The current test results show that the bulging depth of GESC ranges from 1.05 to 1.40 times the diameter of GESC. The influence depth of GESC bulging on surrounding soil displacement is 0~3 the times diameter of GESC.

  • In the present work, the ductile fracture behaviors of ultra-high strength steel sheets along the different loading directions are investigated under various loading paths. Three loading paths, i.e., in-plane shear, uniaxial tension, plane strain tension deformations, are considered, and the corresponding specimens are described. The experiments are conducted using the digital image correlation (DIC) system to analyze the strain at the onset of the fracture. The experimental results show that the loading path for each specimen sample is linear, and different values of the fracture strains for the loading direction from the plane strain tension are observed. The ductile fracture model of the modified Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) is constructed based on the experimental data and evaluated along the rolling direction and transverse direction under various loading paths.
