  • The 3D spatial information projects have been processed and utilized in varied fields. However, the research of the 3D digital map for a role of national base map is not enough. The draft maps, which are raw data for generating 2D digital map, shows problems in generating 3D digital map. The objective of this research is to develop 3D digital map editing system for modifying and editing of 3D digital map from 2D vector and raster information such as a draft map, 2D digital map, DEM, aerial photo and so forth. This 3D digital map editing system was designed to include data structure of geometric and attribute object under provision of ISO/TC211 and OGC standard. This system was developed to implement the function of 3D stereo editing based on stereo viewing, 3D view editing based on projective, and 3D spatial operation. Using this system, 3D digital maps were able to be successfully produced from not only existing draft maps but also modified or edited draft maps and then application results were compared and analyzed.

  • Maps contain and effectively visualize a number of spatial information. Advances in GIS enable researchers to analyze and represent spatial information through digital maps. Choropleth maps represent different quantities showing usually rates, percentages or densities. Generally, researchers make choropleth maps using raw rates. But, if the events are rare, raw rates cannot be sufficient in representing spatial phenomena. That is to say, if the population is large and events are rare, we cannot be sure that the raw rate is correct. The objective of this study is to make choropleth maps by several rate calculation methods and compare them. We use three methods in choropleth mapping; a raw rate, empirical Bayesian method, and spatial rate method which use prior probabilities. The experiments reveal that maps are somewhat different by used methods. We suggest that a raw rate method can not be an only way to make a rate map and researchers should choose an appropriate method for their objectives.

  • LIDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) is a new technology for obtaining DEM(Digital Elevation Model)ewith high density and high point acuracy. As LIDAR emerged, DEM could be developed in the earthsurface more efficiently and more economically, compared to the conventional aerial photogrametry. In this study, a digital camera is simultaneously used in combined LIDAR surveying, and acquired digitial image and DEM produce digital orthoimage. In this process, methods of combining sensor andorthoimage, GCPs determined by GPS surveying are used. Two digital orthoimage are produced; onewith a few GCP and the other without them. The produced maps can be used to corect or revised1:1,000 or 1:5,000 scale maps acordingly.

  • In this study, sample sites are chosen where digitalized cadastral maps are available, and boundaries of forestry, farming lands, and residence are clearly distinguishable. Digital orthophotos, produced from aerial photographs, are overlaid with digitalized cadastral maps to grope for applications of digital orthophoto in cadastre. The conclusions and applicable fields of this study are as follows. The first. digital orthophoto is applicable to solve problems such as discordance and duplication of boundary produced in the process of digitizing cadastral maps. The second, using digital orthophoto, it is possible to extract regions where a trouble of ownership would exist and so the necessity of cadastral resurveying can be brought. The third, by overlaying digital orthophoto and cadastral map, it can be used effectively for the present situation maintenance of buildings. The fourth, because it is possible to examine current land use of each lot, digital orthophoto may contribute to decide the validity of land category on cadastral map.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a Zone-Based Land Use Information System(ZBLIS) using digital topographic maps and public statistics data with a case for Pohang. The Basic Spatial Units(BSUs) used in ZBLIS is the administrative district units(Dong and Lie), and larger or smaller spatial units than this are brought out from BSUs. In the first step, the structure of ZBLIS is constructed to choose Analysis Zone on the top menu, and in subsequent steps, to choose Analysis Categories on sub-menu in terms of dialog windows, and then to choose Analysis Sub-categories and Analysis Theme. The 11 Analysis Categories are consisted of Population, Land Use, Transportation, Industry and Economy etc.. In this case study, it is found that there occur some technical problems in the process of making base-map from digital topographic maps, and inputting attribute data to this base map. For each of these problems, some handling method are recommended.

  • This study is on the development of optimal method for transforming cadastral map to be referred to KGD2002. The method was developed by referring to the method used at transforming Korean National Digital Topographic Map to be referred to KGD2002 and analysing the records about making cadastral map. We tested the method by transforming the cadastral maps of three sample sites and analysing the accuracy of transformed maps. It was proved that the method could be used at transforming cadastral map to be referred to KGD2002 for the propose of being related to National Digital Topographic Map, National GIS data, and so on. We also introduce the longitudinal process for transforming national cadastral maps to be used as a data to verify land ownership.

  • Since the first phase of NGIS (National Geographic Information System) project was launched in 1988, various types and spatial database has been produced and updated. With recent developments in the information technology, the application of spatial data has increased in amount as well as in the coverage of the area of interest. There is a need for production and management of a nationwide single continuous digital map. This paper looks into three problems of map edge matching when dealing with such a task : 1) different scales of adjacent maps, 2) different time of capture between adjacent maps, and 3) different responsible organization where map matching has not been peformed along the boundary.

  • Map update is required to provide up-to-date information. In update process, the most adequate generalization is to be applied to all scales of maps simultaneously. Most of existing maps are composed of 2D data and represented in 2D space. However, maps for next generation are to be generated with 3D spatial information including ortho-images and DEMs. Therefore, 3D generalization is necessary for 3D digital map update. This paper proposes methods for 3D generalization and correction for logical errors possibly accompanied with generalization.

  • The purpose of this study is to arrange the digital maps of Hamamatsu City and to construct the map information system to support the prediction and restoration of Tokai earthquake disasters. The authors arrange the land condition map and compute the populations of each land surface conditions and revealed that $37\%$ of the whole population lives in the safe land, but $63\%$ lives in the rather unsafe surface condition. The authors also arrange the digital map of the main lines of water supply pipe lines in corporation with the Hamamatsu City Water Supply Department and revealed the rather dangerous pipe line area in case of Tokai earthquake.

  • This study is to develop the technology and the ways of the practical use of the integrated digital map of and Electronical Navigational Chart(ENC) and Digital Terrain Map(DTM) for the effective and scientific based conservation, development and management. In this study, as preliminary studies to make eventual integrated maps, the concept of coastal areas are defined and the characteristics of digital maps developed by Korean Geography Institute and National Marine Investigation Institute are carefully analyzed. A test coastal map was developed based on the integrated digital map, a high resolution satellite image and Global Positioning System. Results from the edge matching analysis of coastal lines shows 8 meters difference in maximum. The problems, causes and solutions for the edge matched differences are described. Furthermore, the practical value of utilization, future use and various field of application are described based on the integrated digital map data base of coastal area.
