  • The computational science and engineering field, which combines basic science and computing technology, has emerged as a third scientific methodology, following theories and experiments. This study aimed to identify factors and relationships that affect the continued use of the computational science and engineering (CSE) platform for its successful operation, utilization, and diffusion. To that end, the quality factors of the platform were derived by combining the information system success model and the technology acceptance model. These factors affected user satisfaction and intention to reuse through users' perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the platform. An empirical analysis was conducted through a questionnaire survey of 373 users of the EDISON platform, a representative CSE platform in Korea. The results revealed that all quality factors have a positive influence on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Specifically, information quality has a significant influence on perceived ease of use, and system quality has a significant influence on perceived usefulness. Perceived ease of use has a greater impact on user satisfaction than perceived usefulness, and satisfaction affects intention to reuse. The results can contribute to the development of CSE platforms and the development strategy to expand the number of users.

  • Mixed-matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes containing conventional and hierarchically structured 5A were synthesized for application in oxygen (O2)/nitrogen (N2) separation. In general, incorporating 5A fillers into porous carbon matrices dramatically increased the permeability of the membrane with a marginal decrease in selectivity, resulting in very attractive O2/N2 separation performances. Hierarchical zeolite 5A, which contains both microporous and mesoporous domains, improved the separation performance further, indicating that the mesopores in the zeolite can serve as an additional path for rapid gas diffusion without sacrificing O2/N2 selectivity substantially. This facile strategy successfully and cost-effectively pushed the performance close to the Robeson upper bound. It produced high performance membranes based on Matrimid® 5218 polyimide and zeolite 5A, which are inexpensive commercial products.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as a promising alternative to replace the existing automotive power sources. To get high performance and long-term durability for PEMFC systems, novel water management is essential. To this end, a comprehensive understanding of dynamics of the liquid water droplets within an operating PEMFC plays an important role. In this work, direct visualization of dynamic behaviors of the water droplet in the ex situ unit flow channel of a PEMFC including gas diffusion layer (GDL) is carried out as one of the fundamental studies for novel water management. Water droplet dynamics such as the movement and growth of liquid water droplets are mainly presented. Effects of GDL characteristics and inlet air flow rate on the water droplet transport and its removal from the flow channel are also discussed. The data obtained in this study can contribute to build up the fundamental operating strategy including balanced water removal capacity for automotive PEMFC systems.

  • Major advanced countries pursuing accountability for research and development are carrying out gendered innovations by recognizing the importance of sex and gender analysis in science research and technology development. Korea needs to actively promote gendered innovations as a strategy moving from Fast Follower to First Mover. In order to promote gendered innovations in the science, technology and ICT fields, policies of integrating the gender dimension in the process of research from research design to the analysis of research outcomes should be declared and research support measures should be introduced from the proposal evaluation for the gendered innovations. In particular, in order to support the new gendered innovations research systematically in Korea's R & D system, a legal basis must precede. In this study, we propose an amendment to the law related to gender innovation by analyzing the cases in foreign countries.
