  • Hollow or bumpy ZnO structures with micrometer-size features have been investigated as photocatalysts for water purification due to their high surface area available for reaction with harmful organic molecules and relatively large size for easy separation after finishing the photocatalytic reaction. In this study, selective synthesis of ZnO hollow or crumpled microspheres was performed using a simple and versatile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with various zinc precursors. The morphologies, phases, specific surface areas, and optical properties of the microspheres were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the mechanism underlying the formation of different morphologies and their photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated.

  • The effects of surfactant on the electro-optic properties of holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal(HPDLC) have been studied hoping to increase the diffraction efficiency and to reduce the anchoring energy at interfaces. Octanoic acid(OA) was used as sulfactant. The 2,2,2 trifluoroethyl acrylate(TFEA) was added to the monomer mixture to enhance the phase separation and improve optical properties. The morphology of holographic gratings was examined using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Addition of surfactant was likely to reduce the surface anchoring of the nematic droplet with the polymer surface which favors lowering of the swiching field and to improve the optical qualities.

  • In this study, novel $Ag_2Se$ sensitized $TiO_2$ nanocomposites were prepared by facile sonochemical assisted synthesis method. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 adsorption BET analysis. The as-prepared $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposites simultaneously possessed great adsorptivity for organic dyes and efficient charge separation properties. In the decolorization of rhodamine B, a significant enhancement in the reaction rate was observed for the $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposite compared to the cases of using pure P25 or $TiO_2$. The sonocatalysis activity was higher due to the greater formation of reactive radicals, as well as to the increase of the active surface area of the $Ag_2Se/TiO_2$ nanocomposite.

  • Abrasive powders were recovered from electrical industry sludge by simple physical separation for their recycling. The raw electrical industry sludge was filter pressed, dried, dispersed and then classified by air classifier at various conditions. The three kinds of particles with different particle size distribution were classified by controlling rotor speed and air volumes of the classifier. The recovered abrasive powders, which are classified at 5,000,9000 and 13,000 rpm of rotor speed, are almost same properties to raw pumice, garnet and rouge powders, respectively. The results of particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction and SEM observation show that the recovered powders can be reused as an abrasive powders.

  • Photopolymer films containing fluorescent anthracene polymer, polymethyleneanthracene (PMAn), were prepared with different concentrations of PMAn for holographic recording useful for security documents. The fluorescent photopolymer film showed enhanced fluorescent intensity due to the micro-separation which arose from grating formation and diffusion during photopolymerization. Experimental values of diffraction efficiency were well matched to the simulated values for photopolymers having different PMAn concentrations. Holography patterning was carried out using the fluorescent photopolymer under a photo-mask. A grating was confirmed using microscope techniques in the recorded area under the pattern. Importantly the recorded area showed enhanced fluorescence compared to the unrecorded part, allowing fluorescence patterns at micro scale along with the submicron grating pattern. The fluorescence pattern recorded on the photopolymer film provides additional readability of holographic reading and thus is useful for secure recording and reading of information.

  • The residual stress is inevitably introduced into composites because of the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion, and it is different in each phase. The X-ray technique can detect separately the stress in each phase, so will wield useful information for analyzing the toughening mechanisms of composites. In order to apply the law of mixture to alloy steels with composite microstructures, two phase stainless steel, consisted of ferrite (.alpha.-Fe) and austenite (.gamma.-Fe) structures, was selected. The tensile elastic deformation was loaded, and then the X-ray diffraction technique was used to measure the X-ray elastic constants, the X-ray stress constants and the phase stresses. The law of mixture was investigated and the separation of macrostress and microstress was carried out. The phase stresses (the residual stresses of phase) in each phase, which were measured by X-ray technique, was directly proportional to the applied stress. The macrostress calculated from the phase stresses by using the law of mixture was nearly equal to the applied stress.

  • A novel ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin derivative (CCD-C) was synthesized with chitosan and carboxymethyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin. Its structure was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The adsorption properties for guanosine 5'-monophosphate, cytidine 5'-monophosphate and uridine 5'-monophosphate were studied. Experimental results demonstrated that CCD-C had higher adsorption capability for guanosine 5'-monophosphate, and that the adsorption capacity for guanosine 5'-monophosphate was 74.20mg/g. The adsorption capacity was greatly influenced by pH, time and temperature. The introduction of chitosan enhanced the adsorption ability and adsorption selectivity of ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin for guanosine 5'-monophosphate. This novel derivative of chitosan is expected to have wide applications in the separation, concentration and analysis of nucleotides in biological samples.

  • A method of preparation of magnetite nanoparticles in ordered systems, as in vesicle and microemulsion, consisting of soybean lecithin and water has been introduced. The size of magnetite grain was controlled by the content of soybean lecithin and size of liposomes in the systems. It was found by experiment that magnetite nanoparticles were formed inside the double layer vesicles. The magnetite nanoparticles were separated by magnetic separation and centrifugation and the dispersion of the magnetite nanoparticles prepared at 10% (w/w) soybean lecithin was particularly stable. The formation of pure magnetite nanoparticles was confirmed by analyses of XRD and electron diffraction pattern.

  • Terpolymers, which are chemical compounds composed of three different chemical compounds, have rarely been utilized for gas separation membranes. In this study, we demonstrate a simple process to fabricate a composite membrane for $CO_2/N_2$ separation based on a terpolymer synthesized from poly(2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl] ethylmethacrylate)(PBEM), poly(oxyethylene methacrylate)(POEM), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) via free radical polymerization. A solution of the as-synthesized PBEM-PMMA-POEM was coated onto a microporous polysulfone (PSf) support to form a composite membrane. The successful polymerization and the characteristics and morphology of the membrane were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The gas permeance and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of the PBEM-PMMA-POEM terpolymer membrane were measured at $25^{\circ}C$. A maximum $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 30.2 was obtained at a $CO_2$ permeance of 57.4 GPU ($1GPU=10^{-6}cm^3$(STP)/($s\;cm^2\;cmHg$)).

  • Nano-sized ZnO crystals were successfully incorporated using ion exchange method in TMA-A zeolite synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The optimal composition for the synthesis of TMA-A zeolite was resulted in a solution of $Al(i-pro)_3$:2.2 TEOS:2.4 TMAOH:0.3 NaOH:200 $H_2O$. 0.3g of TMA-A zeolite and 5mol of $ZnCl_2$ solution were employed for the preparation of ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite. The ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite precursors, prepared from the process of mixing, stirring, centrifugal separation and drying, were calcined at temperatures from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. The crystallization process of ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Brunaur-Emett-Teller (BET) surface area of the ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite was measured. Subsequently, the morphology and the particle size depending on the temperature and time were observed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and particle size analyzer.
