  • The rectnt studies on the learning of the scientific concepts have suggested that most students have misconceptions related to the contents to be learned and that those misconceptions exert their influences on the subsequent learning of the content Those facts necessitate the identification of the misconceptions before the instructions and the preparation of the instructional materials based on those misconceptions identified. Several studies also revealed that such biological areas as cell division, reproduction and fertilization were ranked among the most difficult areas for high school students to learn. Therefore, this study had its triple objectives as follows: (1) Identification of misconceptions in such areas as cell division, reproduction and fertilization. (2) Investigation of the current high school biology textbook I's as the sources of those misconceptions. (3) Development of teaching materials based on the misconceptions identified and the problems in the textbooks analyzed. This study identified several misconceptions held by high school students of biological concepts related to the conceptual areas of life-continuity, and found the problems in learning of the high school biology textbooks. Based on the misconceptions and the problems, a teaching/learning model and its content material were developed at the final course of this study.

  • To develop a cognitive system with the flexibility and breadth of human reasoning, it's very important to construct a large scale knowledge base which includes commonsense knowledge as well as expert knowledge. This paper introduces a cognitive system which provides a commonsense reasoning for everyday physical phenomena using qualitative reasoning. It is difficult to apply previous qualitative reasoning to commonsense reasoning since it provides reasoning based on abstract concepts which are apart from everyday real world concepts. Our research provides commonsense reasoning based on sketches and real world concepts by integrating qualitative reasoning and general large scale Cyc knowledge base. Our system has been implemented and tested on various examples.

  • XML is the new universal format for structured documents and data on the World Wide Web. As the Web becomes a major means of disseminating and sharing information and as the amount of XML data increases substantially, there are increased needs to manage and design such XML document in a novel yet efficient way. Moreover a demand of XML Schema(W3C XML Schema Spec.) that verifies XML document becomes increasing recently. However, XML Schema has a weak point for design because of its complication despite of various data and abundant expressiveness. Thus, it is difficult to design a complex document reflecting the usability, global and local facility and ability of expansion. This paper shows a simple way of modeling for XML document using a fundamental means for database design, the Entity-Relationship model. The design from the Entity-Relationship model to XML Schema can not be directly on account of discordance between the two models. So we present some algorithms to generate XML Schema from the Entity-Relationship model. The algorithms produce XML Schema codes using a hierarchical view representation. An important objective of this modeling is to preserve XML Schema's object-oriented concepts such as reusability, global and local ability. In addition to, implementation procedure and evaluation of the proposed design method are described.

  • The new generation of nuclear power plants (NPPs) will likely make use of state-of-the-art technologies in many areas of the plant. The analysis, design, and selection of advanced human-system interfaces (HSIs) constitute an important part of power plant engineering. Designers need to consider the new capabilities afforded by these technologies in the context of current regulations and new operational concepts, which is why they need a more rigorous method by which to plan the introduction of advanced HSIs in NPP work areas. Much of current human factors research stops at the user interface and fails to provide a definitive process for integration of end user devices with instrumentation and control and operational concepts. The current lack of a clear definition of HSI technology, including the process for integration, makes characterization and implementation of new and advanced HSIs difficult. This paper describes how new design concepts in the nuclear industry can be analyzed and how HSI technologies associated with new industrial processes might be considered. It also describes a basis for an understanding of human as well as technology characteristics that could be incorporated into a prioritization scheme for technology selection and deployment plans.

  • This research compared the mechanism of the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere with retaining warmth in the actual greenhouse, analyzed the styles of explaining the greenhouse effect in current textbooks, and investigated teachers' and students' degrees of understanding the effect. The mechanisms of the actual greenhouse and the greenhouse effect are not the same. Nevertheless, in all the current textbooks, the radiation phenomenon by the atmosphere is described as the 'greenhouse effect'. Using the words of the 'greenhouse effect' to refer to the effect of air being kept warm by the heat absorbing gases, causes confusion of concepts. To make learners understand the greenhouse effect exactly, concrete principles such as radiating electromagnetic phenomenon should be explained. However, teachers and current textbooks explained the radiating electromagnetic phenomenon as actual greenhouse. Therefore, it is difficult for learners to understand the greenhouse effect, scientifically. Because of this, learners maybe confused about greenhouse effect concepts.

  • A new method for enhancing blurred images using fuzzy logic concepts is proposed. Blurred images contain blurred boundaries which make it difficult to detect edges and segment areas in images. In order to sharpen blurred edges local contrast information of an image and erosion/dilation properties of local min/max operations are used in which local min/max operations are fuzzy logic operations. so that given images are transformed to fuzzy images and then these operations are applied on them. In this method the sharpening operation can be iteratively applied to the image to get better deblurring effect and gray-scale "salt-and-pepper" noises are suppressed. the efficiency of our algorithm is demonstrated through experimental results obtained with artificially-made blurred images and real blurred images.

  • Recently, the size and complexity of the system we have to develop and to deal with are expanding quickly. Because of the great size of causally related network in itself, such a system will be very difficult to deal with based on the typical reduction model. One of alternatives for this is to adopt emergence-based paradigm instead of reduction-based paradigm. The first is based on the low level causality and the latter on the high level emergence. In this paper we proposed an emergence-based object model realizable in terms of engineering. It is the abstracted one from original object model using of such concepts as performance function, interest function and emotional layer. The suggested model allows us to emerge some important concepts which might be useful for implementing the complex system which can hardly be available by reduction paradigm.

  • In Korean education, the health contents are scattered in various course subjects throughtout the primary and junior high school curriculum. So it is very difficult to provide systematic health education. The purpose of this study was to provide a guide for health education using health topic areas and major concepts that represent the scope of material that should be covered in health instruction. The steps used in selecting these health topic areas and major concepts were as follows: 1. A review of the literature related to health and health education was done to develop the rationale underlying this study. 2. Health topic areas basic to the growth and development characteristics of children, to human needs and to societal needs for healthful living were indentified. 3. The major concepts for each health topic area based on health sciences and children's growth and development levels were selected. 4. The major concepts selected were organized in sequence to guide health education from grade one to grade nine. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The identification of eleven health topic areas essential for health education. These include: personal habits and health healthy growth and development nutrition and health prevention of disease and disorders drugs and health mental health family life and health sex education accident prevention consumer health community health 2. • In this study, the contents of 'electric current' and 'battery' units in elementary and middle school science textbooks were analyzed on the basis of particle and energy concepts. Many problems, reported previously on students' misconceptions about those area, were found in science textbooks. Electric current and battery were covered in both physics and chemistry parts of science textbooks. However, the lack of particle concept in physics units and the lack of energy concept in chemistry units seemed to make it difficult for students to learn those concepts. The descriptions about the two concepts were also not consistent even in the same discipline units. In order to solve these problems, the integration of the views on the particulate nature of matter and energy in the science curriculum and reconstruction of science textbooks were needed.
