DABF(Dissolve Air Flotation with Ball Filter) is developed as the DAF with the addition of a fiber ball at the lower part of the DAF. The DABF with a capacity of 4,500 ㎥/h was constructed at Gijang SWRO plant in Busan. Since the ball filter has high filtration rate, the loading rate of DABF was designed from 20 to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. When one DABF basin is in the back washing mode, the loading rate of other two DABF basins is increased to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. Turbidity at the BF outlet in DABF is <2 NTU at turbidity of 5-10 NTU at the BF inlet. If there is no algae bloom and turbidity is low in raw seawater, only BF in DABF is operated and meets <2 NTU at the BF outlet. Even if BF is operated at high hydraulic loading rates, no significant differential pressure increases and reduction in the turbidity removal rate is minimal in a day. Thus, DABF is the pre-treatment technology that provides stable water quality even with BF onlyoperation without DAF operation. Compared with the DAF, DABF requires additional facilities such as valves, piping, and drainage systems for backwashing the BF. But in terms of footprint and operating costs, DABF has more advantages than DAF. With DABF application, the load of the downstream filtration equipment is decreased so that the capacity of the filtration equipment can be reduced. Also, if the downstream filtration equipment is to be maintained the same regardless of DABF, the operating cost of DABF is less than DAF.

In this study, vibrational behavior of uniform pipe carrying a moving medium is studied by using a transfer matrix and the displacement function derived from the conventional beam theory. In various boundary conditions, flow velocity and mechanical property change of the variation of natural frequency are investigated. The Coriolis term in the original differential equation of motion has been ignored in the investigation. This method is used to study the variation of natural frequency with flow velocity for clamped-clamped, cantilevered, clamped-pinned, pinned-pinned, free-free straight pipe element. It is shown that clamped-clamped, free-free pipe have the highest natural frequency and critical velocity values while cantilevered pipe have the smallest natural frequency for the same mechanical properties. From the vibration effects of mechanical property variation, it is shown that bending stiffness and pipe length variation has large influence on natural frequency and critical velocity. Since the order of transfer matrix is not changed with boundary conditions of pipe element, this method proposed can be easily applied to personal-computer for vibration analysis of pipe element. Furthermore, this method can be extended to three-dimensional system by using a coordinate transformation for the analysis of piping systems.

In most ascomycetes, a single mating type locus, MAT, with two alternate forms (MAT1-1 and MAT1-2) called idiomorphs, controls mating ability. In heterothallic ascomycetes these alternate idiomorphs reside in different nuclei. In contrast, most homothallic ascomycetes carry both MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 in a single nucleus, usually closely linked. An example of the latter is Gibberella zeae, a producer of mycotoxins such as trichothecene and zearalenone that threaten human and animal health. We asked if G. zeae could be made strictly heterothallic by manipulation of MAT. Targeted gene replacement was used to differentially delete MAT1-1 or MAT1-2 from a wild type haploid MAT1-1 MAT1-2 strain, resulting in MAT1-1;mat1-2, mat1-1;MAT1-2 strains that were self-sterile, yet able to cross to wild type testers and more importantly, to each other. These results indicated that differential deletion of MAT idiomorphs eliminates selfing ability of G. zeae, but the ability to outcross is retained. To our knowledge, this is the first report of complete conversion of fungal reproductive strategy from homothallic to heterothallic by targeted manipulation of MAT. Practically, this approach opens the door to simple and efficient procedures for obtaining sexual recombinants of G. zeae that will be useful for genetic analyses of mycotoxin production and other traits, such as ability to cause disease.
The transient behavior of a passive air breathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) operated on vapor-feeding mode is studied in this paper. It generally takes 30 minutes after starting for the cell response to come to its steady-state and the response is sometimes unstable. A mathematical dynamic one-dimensional model for simulating transient response of the DMFC is presented. In this model a DMFC is decomposed into its subsystems using lumped model and divided into five layers, namely the anodic diffusion layer, the anodic catalyst layer, the proton exchange membrane (PEM), the cathodic catalyst layer and the cathodic diffusion layer. All layers are considered to have finite thickness, and within every one of them a set of differential-algebraic governing equations are given to represent multi-components mass balance, such as methanol, water, oxygen and carbon dioxide, charge balance, the electrochemical reaction and mass transport phenomena. A one-dimensional, isothermal and mass transport model is developed that captures the coupling between water generation and transport, oxygen consumption and natural convection. The single cell is supplied by pure methanol vapor from a methanol reservoir at the anode, and the oxygen is supplied via natural air-breathing at the cathode. The water is not supplied from external source because the cell uses the water created at the cathode using water back diffusion through nafion membrane. As a result of simulation strong effects of water transport were found out. The model analysis provides several conclusions. The performance drop after peak point is caused by insufficiency of water at the anode. The excess water at the cathode makes performance recovery impossible. The undesired crossover of the reactant methanol through the PEM causes overpotential at the cathode and limits the feeding methanol concentration.
Changes of the hydraulic conductivity resulting from the redistribution of stresses by underground excavation are examined using the strain-dependent hydraulic conductivity modification relation, where the modulus reduction ratio and induced strain are the major parameters. The modulus reduction ratio is defined in terms of RMR(Rock Mass Rating) to represent the full gamut of rock mass condition. Though shear dilation has the effect on the modification of hydraulic conductivity, the extent of it depends on RMR When the extensional strain is applied to a fracture, the hydraulic conductivity increases with the decrease of RMR Loading configuration has the effect on the modification of hydraulic conductivity, where the differential stress mode with a magnitude of the minimum principal stress $($\sigma$_x)$ fixed and a magnitude of the maximum principal stress $($\sigma$_y)$ varied is found to exert the greatest effect on the change of hydraulic conductivity.
The purpose of the present study was to determine the in vivo effect of oxytocin antagonist-I(Al) on uterine oxytocin receptor number (Rn) and/or binding affinity (Kd) in the estrous rat. Anesthetized rats were given a bolus infusion of control or 5${\mu}\textrm{g}$ of AI and sacri-ficed 0.5 and 4 hours later. The uterine tissue was removed, trimmed and frozen. Membrane oxytocin receptors were isolated after homogenization of uterine tissue and differential ultracentrifugation. The oxytocin receptor assay was performed by saturation with cold oxytocin competion with a high specific activity oxytocin antagonist. Rn and Kds were determined by nonlinear curve fitting methods. No differences(p>0.05) between the AI and control treated animals in either oxytocin receptor number or binding affinity was detected in this study. These data suggest that the major mode of action of AI is via competitive inhibition at the uterine oxytocin receptor and not by altering receptor number or binding affinity.

A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) was applied to estimate biokinetic coefficients of Clostridium cadaveris and Clostridium sporogenes, which utilize protein as carbon source. Experimental data on changes in peptone concentration and 16S rRNA gene copy numbers of C. cadaveris and C. sporogenes were fitted to model. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta approximation with non-linear least squares analysis was employed to solve the ordinary differential equations to estimate biokinetic coefficients. The maximum specific growth rate (μmax), half-saturation concentration (Ks), growth yield (Y), and decay coefficient (Kd) of C. cadaveris and C.sporogenes were 0.73 ± 0.05 and 1.35 ± 0.32 h-1, 6.07 ± 1.52 and 5.67 ± 1.53 g/l, 2.25 ± 0.75 × 1010 and 7.92 ± 3.71 × 109 copies/g, 0.002 ± 0.003 and 0.002 ± 0.001 h-1, respectively. The theoretical specific growth rate of C. sporogenes always exceeded that of C. cadaveris at peptone concentration higher than 3.62 g/l. When the influent peptone concentration was 5.0 g/l, the concentration of C.cadaveris gradually decreased to the steady value of 2.9 × 1010 copies/ml at 4 h Hydraulic retention time (HRT), which indicates a 67.1% reduction of the initial population, but the wash out occurred at HRTs of 1.9 and 3.2 h. The 16S rRNA gene copy numbers of C. sporogenes gradually decreased to steady values ranging from 1.1 × 1010 to 2.9 × 1010 copies/ml. C. sporogenes species was predicted to wash out at an HRT of 1.6 h.

Direct freezing tests of soybean seed by liquid nitrogen were carried out at various moisture contents and the following important conclusions were drawn from the results of temperature measurements of soybean seed and photographs of bubbles generated on its surface : 1) Assuming that the temperature gradient in a soybean seed is negligible because of its small seed size and the freezing ratio is followed the Heiss's formula, and a differential equation based on the heat energy balance was introduced . The equation was easily solved by the Runge-Kutta-Gill method and the predicted values of the temperature were in good agreement with the observed data. 2) The photographs of bubble generation during freezing showed the boiling mode was nucleate, and then the most suitable formula on the nucleate boiling heat transfer was introduced from many formulate proposed up to now by fitting the calculated values based on the formula to the observed data. The formula used for the predict on of the seed temperature was as follows: $\frac{{\partial}T_s}{\partial\theta}\;=\;-\frac{{\alpha}(T_s\;-\;T_L)^{3.3}}{W(C_s\;-\;\frac{{\delta}m(CT_s\;+\;{\sigma})}{T_s^2})}$ where C = difference of the specific heat between pure ice and water m=moisture content of soybean seed $T_s$ = seed temperature $T_L$ = Temperature of liquid nitrogen W = mass of soybean seed $\alpha$ = proportional constant $\delta$ = constant depends on variety or the type of seed $\theta$ = time $\sigma$ = latent heat of melting of pure ice This study will give important information in the hydro-freezing technique by liquid nitrogen, available as a new technique of processing agricultural products in the near future.

Operation of an electromagnetic shaker system using a Class-D amplifier may cause unacceptable electromagnetic interference to another electronic system, requiring the user to take whatever steps are necessary to correct the interference. A differential amplifier in a Class-D amplifier is used to decrease the effect of a common-mode noise voltage in a shaker system. To prevent a ground loop, a transformer is inserted in another shaker system. These methods show reduction of the unwanted vibration which has occurred before. A transformer in a charge amplifier was used to prevent a ground loop in a shaker system using a Class-AB amplifier a few years ago, but it was susceptible of noise in a shaker system using a Class-D amplifier. Hence we corrected a ground loop between a charge amplifier and a vibration control/analysis system without a transformer. The usefulness of this approach is illustrated by the results of experiments.
The increasing lack of good quality soils allowing the development of roadway, motorway, or railway networks, as well as large scale industrial facilities, necessitates the use of reinforcement techniques. Their aim is the improvement of the global performance of compressible soils, both in terms of settlement reduction and increase of the load bearing capacity. Among the various available techniques, the improvement of soils by incorporating vertical stiff piles appears to be a particularly appropriate solution, since it is easy to implement and does not require any substitution of significant soft soil volumes. The technique consists in driving a group of regularly spaced piles through a soft soil layer down to an underlying competent substratum. The surface load being thus transferred to this substratum by means of those reinforcing piles, which illustrates the case of a piled embankment. The differential settlements at the base of the embankment between the soft soil and the stiff piles lead to an "arching effect" in the embankment due to shearing mechanisms. This effect, which can be accentuated by the use of large pile caps, allows partial load transfer onto the pile, as well as surface settlement reduction, thus ensuring that the surface structure works properly. A technique for producing rigid piles has been developed to achieve in a single operation a rigid circular pile associated with a cone shaped head reversed on the place of a rigid circular pile. This technique has been used with success in a pile-supported road near Bourgoin-Jallieu (France). In this article, a numerical study based on this real case is proposed to highlight the functioning mode of this new technique in the case of industrial slabs.
