  • The chemical behavior and properties on the redox state of environmental pollutant has been investigated by electrochemical methods. We carried out to measure the variations in the redox reaction of differential pulse polarogram and cyclic voltammogram. The results observed the influences on redox potential and current of various factors with temperature and pH. These were established factors as the effect of the redox reaction. It can be clearly recognized that the electrode reaction are from qusi-reversible to irreversible processes. Also, it was mixing with reaction current controlled. The bits-phenol A in the waste water was made to compound with cobalt ion and it take away from the separation into compound. The $Co(BPA)_2$ compound was not found to be dissociation in waste water. However, this compound is avery unstable(K=1.02) and for a while, it was to be a dissociation. Therefore, we believed that it was likely to a toxic substance.

  • The electrochemical reduction of ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dibenzyl N-benzylidene L-aspartate in 0.1M LiCl ethanol solution was investigated by direct current (DC), differential pulse (DP) polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry(CPC). The irreversible reductive amination of imino group proceeded to form ${\alpha},{\beta}$-dibenyl N-benzyl L-aspartate by CEC or CE electrochemical reaction mechanism at the first reduction step (-0.92 volts vs. Ag-AgCl). The polarographic reduction wave was slightly suppressed due to inhibitory effect of micelle, while the irreversibility was increased according to the increase of Triton X-100 concentration. Upon the basis of product analysis and polarogram interpretation with pH change, possible CE electrode reaction mechanism was suggested.

  • 1-Benzyl-4-iodomethyl-2-azetidinone(BIMA) was synthesized and its electrochemical reduction was investigated by direct current, differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry. The irreversible two electron transfer on reductive dehalogenation of iodo group proceeded to form 1-benzyl-4-methyl-2-azetidinone by EEC electrode reaction mechanism at the first reduction step(-1.35 volts vs. Ag-AgCl). The polarographic reduction waves separated into two reduction steps due to anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate) effects, while the waves were shifted to the positive potential as the concentration of cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) increased. Upon the basis of results on the product analysis and interpretation of polarogram with pH variable, EEC electrochemical reaction mechanism was suggested.

  • Voltammetric behavior of some light lanthanide ions($La^{3+}$, $Pr^{3+}$, $Nd^{3+}$, $Sm^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$) in acetonitrile(AN) and dimethylformamide(DMF) has been investigated by direct current, differential pulse polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The reduction of $La^{3+}$, $Pr^{3+}$ and $Nd^{3+}$ in 0.1M TEAP proceeded directly to the metallic state through three-electron charge transfer of irreversible process where as $Sm^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$ proceeded by charge transfer of two steps. As the results of the cyclic voltammetric investigation, the first step reduction of $Sm^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$ were a quasireversible reaction, the second step reductions were an irreversible reaction. The cathodic peak currents of the differential pulse polarogram showed adsorptive properties at lower sweep rates and high concentrations of these metal ions. The peak potenital was shifted to a negative petential and the peak current decreased with the increase of percentage of water in AN. On the other hand, the peak potential was shifted to a positive potential and the peak current decreased with an increased percentage of water in DMF.

  • The electrochemical reduction of N-tert-butylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TBBS; vulcanization accelerator) was investigated by direct current, differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry. The electrode reduction of TBBS proceeded E-C-E-C reaction mechanism by four electrons transfer at irreversible one wave (-2.31 volts vs. Ag/0.1M AgN$O_3$ in AN). As the results of controlled potential electrolysis, mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), benzothiazole disulfide (MBT dimer) and extricated sulfur were products which followed by cleavage of the sulfenamide (-S-N=) bond. Upon the basis of products analysis and polarogram interpretation with pH variable, electrochemical reaction mechanism was suggested.

  • The electrochemical reduction behavior of Bilirubin (BR) in phosphate buffer (pH 7.8) solution was studied by DC polarography, differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry. In DC polarogram, two reduction waves of BR were found. The half wave potentials of two reduction waves were -1.32 and -1.51 volts vs. Ag/AaCl respectively. The current type of 1st reduction wave was diffusion-controlled and the 2$^{nd}$ reduction wave was diffusion current containing a little kinetic current. The electrochemical reduction process of BR at each reduction step was all irreversible. The prewave appeared at lower concentration than 3.4 ${\times}$ 10$^{-4}$M, this prewave was identified as adsorption prewave. And the number of electron transfered in reduction steps, n$_{app}$ was two for the 1st reduction step and one for the 2$^{nd}$ reduction step.

  • We synthesized the binuclear tetradentate Schiff base cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes such as [Co(II)_2(TSBP)(L)_4], [Ni(II)_2(TSBP)(II)_4] and [Cu(II)_2(TSBP)] (TSBP: 3,3',4,4'-tetra(salicylideneimino)-1,1'-biphenyl, L: Py, DMSO and DMF). We identified the binucleated structure of these complexes by elemental analysis, IR-spectrum, UV-visible spectrum, T.G.A. and D.S.C. According to the results for cyclic voltammogram and differential pulse polarogram of 1 mM complexes in nonaqueous solvents included 0.1M TEAP-L (L; Py, DMSO and DMF) as supporting electrolyte, it was found that diffusionally controlled redox processes of four steps through with one electron for binucleated Schiff base Cobalt(II) complex was Co(III)_2 {^\longrightarrow \\_\longleftarrow^e^-}Co(III)Co(II)_2{^\longrightarrow \\_\longleftarrow^e^-}Co(II){^\longrightarrow \\_\longleftarrow^e^-}Co(I){^\longrightarrow \\_\longleftarrow^e^-}Co(I)_2 and two steps with one electron for Nickel(II) and Copper(II) complexes were M(II)_2 {^\longrightarrow \\_\longleftarrow^e^-}M(I)M(I){^\longrightarrow \\_\longleftarrow^e^-}M(I)_2 (M; Ni and Cu) in nonaqueous solvents.

  • The complexations and selectivities of the 10 species of mono- and dimethylsubstituted anilinium ions with 18-crown-6 in methanol are examined at dropping mercury electrode. The stability constants of these complexes varies drastically due to the steric hindrance by the positions and numbers of methyl groups. And the analyses of the isomeric mixtures of methylanilinium, which are impossible to detect due to the overlapped peaks in normal conditions, were also accomplished by the additions of 18-crown-6 as the supporting complexing agent using the selective complexations by the steric hindrance effects. As results in case of the difference of stability, ${\Delta}log\;K$ were about 0.7~1.3, it was possible to confirm the existence of two species qualitatively. Otherwise when ${\Delta}log\;K$ were large than 1.6, the quantitative determinations of each species could be accomplished sucessfully. From these results it is deduced that the selective recongnition of the positions and numbers of methyl groups as the steric hindrance in anililniums by 18-crown-6 cause the large variation of the magnitudes of negative shift of reduction waves for guest ions in mixtures.
