  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of resistance on the muscle activities of the long and short heads of the biceps brachii, according to the elbow angle in supination, and the difference in muscle activity between the long and the short heads. Methods: This study was conducted with 22 men in their 20s who voluntarily agreed to participate. With the glenohumeral joint neutral in a position of supination, the elbow angle was randomly moved to 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°. Using an 8-channel surface EMG while the participants held a 2-kg. dumbbell, the muscle activities of the long and the short heads of the biceps brachii were measured. The measured data were statistically processed using SPSS for Windows 12.0. For the activities of the short and the long heads according to the angle, a one-way ANOVA was conducted, and subsequently, to check the results of an analysis of the difference between groups, an LSD post-hoc test was conducted. An independent t-test was used to compare the activities of the long head and the short head according to the angles. Results: The analysis of the impact of the load of the dumbbell at each elbow angle on the muscle activities of the long and short heads of the biceps brachii revealed significant differences in both heads (p < 0.05). The result of the post-hoc analysis showed significant differences in both heads at angles between 0° and 30°, between 0° and 60°, and between 0° and 90°. Analysis of the impact of the load of the dumbbell in supination on the muscle activities of the long and short heads showed a significant difference at the angle between 0° and 30° (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The long head of the biceps brachii mainly acts in supination; however, in supination at elbow-bending angles of 60° and 90°, there was no difference in muscle activity between the short head and the long head.

  • The present study was conducted to assess gender differences in the relationship between adiposity and systolic inter-arm blood pressure difference (sIAD) in Korean adults. In this paper, we propose a 410 adults (235 men and 175 women) who were over 30 years old and had undergone a health check participated from June to November 2013. The incidences of high sIAD (sIAD ${\geq}10mmHg$) in males and females were 24.6% and 15.3%, respectively. We conducted a logistic regression analysis after adjusting for variables such as age, smoking, drinking, exercising, TC, TG, HDL-C, and FPG. Key study results were as follows: First, in men, the odds ratio (OR) of high sIAD of the obesity group was significantly higher than that of the normal weight group [2.25 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.19-4.25)], but abdominal obesity was not associated with high sIAD. Second, in women, the OR of high sIAD of the abdominal obesity group was significantly higher than that of the non-abdominal obesity group [2.52 (95% CI, 1.03-6.13)], but obesity status was not associated with high sIAD. In conclusion, Obesity is associated with the incidence of high sIAD in Korean men, and abdominal obesity is associated with the incidence of high sIAD in Korean women.

  • The aim of this study was to identify the differences in cellular phone dependency and its use levels of usage purposes according to children's gender, and also to analyze the differences in individual and interpersonal relations development due to cellular phone dependency in children based on gender. Using the first year data of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) 2010, this study analyzed 1,604 fourth graders who have their own cellular phones. For statistical analysis, descriptive statistics were calculated and mean difference analyses were conducted. The results showed that there was no difference between boys and girls in cellular phone dependency. The girls' total phone use level was higher than that of boys and meaningful gender differences in the phone use levels were found in the five phone usage purposes. In both boys and girls, the higher phone dependency groups demonstrated higher levels of phone use in more than eight usage purposes, lower self-resilience and self-regulating learning ability, and less positive peer and teacher relations. These findings show the importance of being concerned about and educating children in the fourth grade about the proper uses of cellular phones.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using a digital model and cone beam computed tomograph(CBCT) image for model analysis. Methods: Model analyses of CBCT images, plaster models, and digital models of 20 orthodontic patients with a permanent dentition with no proximal metal restorations, were compared. Results: The average differences of tooth size measurements were 0.01 to 0.20 mm, and the average difference of arch length discrepancy measurements were 0.41 mm in the maxilla and 0.82 mm in the mandible. The difference in Bolton discrepancy measurements was 0.17 mm for the anterior region and 0.44 mm overall but with no statistically significant difference. When comparing CBCT images with plaster models, the average differences in tooth size measurements were -0.22 to 0.01 mm, and the average differences in arch length discrepancy measurements were 0.43 mm in the maxilla and 0.32 mm in the mandible. Difference in Bolton discrepancy measurements were 0.35 mm in the anterior region and 1.25 mm overall. CBCT images showed significantly smaller overall Bolton discrepancy measurements. Conclusions: Although there were statistically significant differences in some model analysis measurements, the ranges of measurement errors of the digital model and CBCT images were clinically acceptable. Therefore, a digital model and CBCT image can be used for model analysis.

  • Objective: To identify the right and left difference of the facial soft tissue landmarks three-dimensionally from the subjects of normal occlusion individuals. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained in 48 normal occlusion adults (24 men, 24 women), and reconstructed into 3-dimensional (3D) models by using a 3D image soft ware. 3D position of 27 soft tissue landmarks, 9 midline and 9 pairs of bilateral landmarks, were identified in 3D coordination system, and their right and left differences were calculated and analyzed. Results: The right and left difference values derived from the study ranged from 0.6 to 4.6 mm indicating a high variability according to the landmarks. In general, the values showed a tendency to increase according to the lower and lateral positioning of the landmarks in the face. Overall differences were determined not only by transverse differences but also by sagittal and vertical differences, indicating that 3D evaluation would be essential in the facial soft tissue analysis. Conclusions: Means and standard deviations of the right and left difference of facial soft tissue landmarks derived from this study can be used as the diagnostic standard values for the evaluation of facial asymmetry.
