  • Pipe thinning is one of the major issues for the structural fracture of pipes of nuclear power plants. Therefore a method to inspect a large area of piping systems quickly and accurately is needed. In this paper, we proposed the method for monitoring pipe thinning. Our basic idea come from that a group velocity of impact wave is different as wall thickness. If the group velocity is measured, wall thickness can be estimated. To obtain the group velocity, time-frequency analysis is used. This is because an arrival time difference can be measured easily in time-frequency domain rather than time domain. To test the performance of this technique, experiments have been performed for a plate and U type pipe. Results show that the proposed technique is quite powerful in the monitoring pipe thinning.

  • In this paper, the Go-Back-N ARQ protocol with decoding in communication network is considered. The time delay and throughput are respectively analyzed as a function of window size and decoding time out. Packets arrive continuously at the decoder, and are stored in a buffer if the decoder is busy upon its arrival. The decoder devotes no more than a time-out period of predetermined length to the decoding of any single packet. If packet decoding is completed within that period, the packet leaves the system. Otherwise, it is retransimitted and its decoding starts anew. The time delay and throughput are obtained using recursive formula and difference equation. An appropriate time out and window size that satisfies the grade of service can be determined.

  • We investigate and analyze the problems encountered in frame-based estimation of TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) using CPSP function. Spectral leakage occurring in framing of a speech signal by a rectangular window could make estimation of CPSP spectrum inaccurate. Framing with other windows to reduce the spectral leakage distorts the signal due to the asynchronous weighting around the frame specifically both ends of the frame. These problems degrade the performance of the CPSP-based TDOA estimation. In this paper, we propose a method to alleviate those problems by pre-emphasis of the speech signal. It reduces the influence of the spectral leakage by reducing dynamic range of the spectrum of a speech signal with pre-emphasis. To validate the proposed method of pre-emphasis, we carry out TDOA estimation experiments in various noise and reverberation conditions, Experimental results have shown that the framing of pre-emphasized microphone output by a rectangular window achieves higher success rate of TDOA estimation than any other framing methods.

  • Measurements of bottom loss as a function of grazing angle (in range of $9{\sim}14^{\circ}$) at a frequency range of 4 ~ 8 kHz were conducted on an experimental site off Geoje island in October 2015. Geoacoustic inversion of the surficial sediment thickness is performed using the arrival time difference between the surficial layer and the sub-bottom layer reflected signal. To invert the thickness of surficial sediment, we used the grain size of $8{\sim}10{\phi}$ obtained by KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources). The thickness of the surficial sediment was estimated to be 4 ~ 7 m. Finally, this inversion result was compared with the geoacoustic observation conducted by the KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology) using sub-bottom profiler.

  • Success in modern war depends on electronic warfare. Therefore, It is very important to identify the kind of Radar PRI modulations in a lot of Radar electromagnetic waves. In this paper, I propose an algorithm to identify Linear up Sliding PRI, Non-Linear up Sliding PRI and Linear Down Sliding PRI, Non-Linear Down Sliding PRI among many Radar pulses. We applied not only the TDOA(Time Difference Of Arrival) concept of Radar pulse signals incoming to antennas but also a rising and falling curve characteristics of those PRI's. After making a program by such algorithm, we input each 40 data to those PRI's identification programs and as a result, those programs fully processed the data in according to expectations. In the future, those programs can be applied to the ESM, ELINT system.

  • Radar signal identification of electronic warfare is a technology that recognizes the pulse repetition interval (PRI) from a set of pulse description words (PDWs) generated by the signal receiver. Conventionally batch processing is widely used in which a number of PDWs are collected as a unit and identifies PRI from the batch. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction algorithm based on the streaming process. This technique does not wait to form a batch. Whenever a PDW(Pulse Description Word) is generated from the signal receiver, the streaming process tries to form a cluster of PDWs, and makes the DTOA (Difference of Time of Arrival) histogram, finds out the frame PRI based on the concentration ratio, and decides the number of stagger stages. Experiments proved that the proposed algorithm derives stable recognition results as the cluster size increases.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient estimation algorithm to find unknown location of an earth station for a geostationary satellite system. A cross ambiguity function (CAF), using time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference arrival (FDOA), is usually used to estimate the unknown location of an unauthorized earth station which may invoke interference to the existing satellite systems. However, a practical estimation of the location data requires tremendous computational time of CAF, and this prohibits direct utilization of CAF. For this reason, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm which utilizes characteristics of TDOA and FDOA within CAF. The proposed algorithm greatly enhances the computational efficiency without any performance degradation. In addition, we demonstrate the simulation results on the estimation performance by the resolution of the CAF estimation. The results provided in this paper will be utilized at the real system implementation.

  • In this paper, a resource management technique for digital duplexing (DD) systems using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is proposed. The proposed technique can reduce the dynamic range of the signal received at the subscriber station (SS) and minimize the effects of inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) due to the time difference of arrival (TDoA) without using a cyclic suffix. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed technique can reduce the number of bits for an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and increase the signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) significantly.

  • When the sensor geometry is poor, the user position estimate obtained by of GN (Gauss-Newton) method is often diverged in radio navigation. In other to avoid divergence problem QCLS (Quadratic Correction Least Square) method using TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) measurements is introduced, but the estimation error is somewhat large. This paper presents the modified QCLS method using weighted least square. Since the weighting matrix is influenced by the unknown user position, two-step approach is employed in the proposed method. The weighting matrix is estimated in the first step using least square, and then find user position is obtained using weighted least square. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method is superior to the conventional QCLS all over the workspace.

  • A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission (AE) in plates whose thichness are close to or thinner than the wavelength has been studied by introducing wavelet transform de-noising technique. The detected AE signals were pre-processed using wavelet transform to be decomposed into the low-frequency, high-amplitude flexural components and the high-frequency, low-amplitude extensional components. If the wavelet transform de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the extensional wave component, one of the critical errors of source location in plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved and independent of the setting of gain and threshold, plate thickness, sensor-to-sensor distance, and the relative position of source to sensors. Since the method utilizes the flexural component of relatively high amplitude, it could be applied to very large, thin-walled structures in practice.
