The purpose of our study is to analyze the effect of socio-economic status on the diet pattern of Korean adults. Raw data from the fifth (2010-2012) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used, and finally 11,700 adults were analyzed as subjects. Results in consideration of the socio-economic status of the subjects, a linear trend was observed in men in which the odds ratio of having lunch (p for trend=0.006) and dinner (p for trend=0.0317) decreased as the level of education went down. In diet frequency, a decreasing trend (p for trend=0.0328) was observed in which the odds ratio of having 3 meals a day reduced as the household income lowered. For women, a linear trend (p for trend=0.0012) was observed in which the frequency of dinner decreased as the level of education became lower. A falling trend in the rate of having 3 meals a day was also observed (p for trend=0.0135). Our study analyzed the characteristics of the diet patterns of individuals according to their socio-economic status with the purpose of suggesting guidelines for correcting. To prevent this, we will need education and awareness and public attention for the practice of correct eating habits.
Purpose: This study verified the reliability and validity of the Diet Quality Index for Indian children (DQIIC). Methods: The study sample included 100 school going boys and girls (7-9 years). The dietary behavior of children was studied using a questionnaire and 24-hour dietary recall. The DQIIC comprises 21 items which aimed to assess the diet of Indian children on the basis of variety, adequacy of consumption of dietary components, and moderation in the amount of nutrients that are associated with diseases and dietary habits. The reliability of the DQIIC was assessed using the split half method, Cronbach's alpha, and test retest reliability. Content validity was evaluated using content validity ratio (CVR). Results: The intake of iron was found to be less than the recommended dietary allowances. There was frequent consumption of empty calorie packaged foods and higher than the recommended amount of sodium. Reliability of the DQIIC was 0.85 by split half method and the correlation coefficient for test retest reliability was 0.87. Cronbach's alpha was 0.62 and CVR was 0.85 for this index. Most of the children fell in the moderately healthy category. Conclusion: The DQIIC is a reliable and valid tool to assess the diet quality of Indian children between 7-9 years.
Korean undergraduate students attempt to lose weight but often fail due to utilizing ineffective weight loss strategies. Some diet programs have succeeded, yet, they have not provided adequate skills for long-term weight maintenance. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of a low calorie diet and exercise with nutritional education on weight loss, serum lipid profiles, nutrient intakes, and dietary behavior modification in overweight and obese undergraduate students. The subjects in the low calorie diet group (LCD; n = 12) and the low calorie diet plus exercise group (LCDE; n = 13) had the same goal of losing 4 kg during a 12 week program. Nutrient intakes were assessed by the 24 hour recall method. Also, food habits and dietary behaviors were investigated by self-administered questionnaires before and after the weight control program and one month after completing the program. LCD and LCDE groups lowered body weight by 2 kg and 1 kg, respectively, although they decreased calorie intake by 355 and 287 kcal per day compared to intakes prior to the study. Body fat mass decreased in both the LCD and LCDE groups; however, the decrease was greater in the LCDE group. In addition, only the LCDE group increased muscle mass. The LCD group had a slightly better effect in reducing body weight, body fat, and waist circumference than the LCDE group. However, their decrease was reversed after the mid-study check in the LCD group; the reduction was better maintained and decreased more in the LCDE group. However, serum lipid profiles were already in borderline prior to the study; moreover, they were not modified after losing weight. The dietary behavior program helped students to develop better dietary habits. In conclusion, the combination of a low calorie diet and exercise is necessary in order to maintain longer weight loss by increasing muscle mass and decreasing body fat.
Objectives : This study examined the association between body mass index(BMI) and psychological factors; self-esteem, depression, restraint eating, disinhibition, and hunger. The difference of TFEQ(restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger) was analyzed in variety of current diet situations. Methods : The research was based on a sample of people who visited our website and submit the result of self test(self-esteem n=3183; TFEQ n=5167; BDI n=2457). Results : Self-esteem and BDI was slightly correlated with BMI. There is negative correlation between restraint eating and BMI and positive correlations were observed between hunger and BMI, and disinhibition and BMI. We studied diet situation and eating habits. We divided the sample into 4 groups in accordance with self-submitted result: non-diet group(n=2806), diet-failed group within 3 months group(n=371), maintaining group after successful-diet(n=233), on-going diet group(n=1757) As to restraint eating, non-diet group showed the lowest score in restraint eating and maintaining group after successful-diet showed the highest. The score in disinhibition and hunger was significantly lower in maintaining group after successful-diet group than one in diet-failed group. Conclusion : These results suggest that it would be essential to treat these psychological factors such as depression and self-esteem in weight loss program. Considering the result in diet-situation and TFEQ, we insist that restraint-eating and disinhibition should be controlled. If these psychological factors were not treated in place, even the successful diet might turn out to be a worse situation like binge-eating
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the metabolic syndrome (MS) risk factors, physical activity, and diet habits, between the fifties and sixties in postmenopausal women. Methods: Two hundred and thirty subjects were recruited from the volunteers of a tertiary care hospital located in an urban city of South Korea. MS was defined by the criteria of the American Heart Association, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the International Diabetes Federation, and obesity was determined by waist circumference ${\geq}85cm$. Results: During fifty and sixty years of age, the prevalence of MS was 19.7% and 30.6%, respectively. The waist circumference, triglyceride, blood pressure, and fasting serum glucose levels were significantly higher in the MS group than in the non-MS group during their fifties and sixties. For participants in their sixties, the pulse pressure and fasting serum glucose levels were significantly higher in the MS group than in the non-MS group. Physical activity was significantly lower in the MS group than in the non-MS group in their sixties. Conclusion: These results show that nurses should focus on increased physical activity for patients their sixties, especially MS patients for the improvement of MS risk factors.
This study was conducted to show one case model for a community nutrition program as a part of the public health systems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the nutrition education through the Knowledge(K), Attitude(A), and Practice of the nutrition that is the Behavior-Diagnosis(Be-D). The Nutrition Education was done for 33 housewives whom live in Sudong-Myeun, Namyangju-Kun, Kyungki-Do. It had been performed eight times during April 3rd through May 30th, 1991. We investigated actual conditions of objects about K, A, Be-D in the nutrition, and the Food Environment(En) separately before and after the nutrition education by questionnaire and interview. The results of the research turned out as follows ; 1. The comparison of the scores before and after nutrition education showed significant increase in the knowledge and attitude. 2. The scores of the Be-D were also significantly higher after education, especially in the number of foods taken per day, the balanced diet, the general food habits for adult, and amounts of intake of nutrients showed significant increase of lipid, calcium, Vit. A, $Vit B_2$, Vit. C after nutrition education. 3. Multiple regression analysis showed that the scores of the Knowledge and En were significantly associated with the number of food taken per day for condition of adjusting socio-demografic factor and A effect. Also, En was important variable in explanation of the balanced diet and A, En were important in the general food habits for adult.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to study the effect of the obesity control program to the extent of the overweight children's knowledge about obesity, physical exercise, dietary habits and the extent of obesity. Methods: A total of 61 elementary school children between the age of 9-12 were chosen for this study: 31 overweight children whose extent of obesity exceeded over 20% when measured using Broca index and other 30 overweight children of the same category for the comparison as a control group. The obesity control program made up of regular physical exercise for five days per week and a weekly diet education and consultation was implemented for the period of 8 weeks. Results: The knowledge about obesity, regular physical exercise, and diet habits were significantly improved after implementing the obesity control program, as compared to the control group. But the extent of obesity was not significantly decreased. Conclusion: These results suggest that the studies are needed to define factors of effective program and develop the effective program for decreasing the extent of obesity.
148 male and 153 female college students attitude toward weight control, diet behaviors and food habits were investigated by self questionnaire. Among the students, underweight students were 11.0$\%$, normal weight students were 63.5$\%$ and obese students were 25.6$\%$ by RBW standard, and underweight students were 16.0$\%$, nromal weight students were 70.4$\%$ and obese students were 13.6% by BMI standard. However, more than 10% of male and 38$\%$ of female students thought they were obese even thought their body weight were normal. Female students tended to overeat when they were stressed or in a bad mood and generally all participants had poor scores on the dietary attitudes test, however, male students had significantly higher scores than female students. Female students tended to choose food more for its taste. Collegestudents are in early stage of adult life and their dietary attitudes, food behaviors and life style will continue to their later life. Therefore college students need more good nutrition knowledge, positive dietary attitudes, modified life styles to prevent and treat collegestudents obesity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of obesity, and the factors related to children's obesity. Method: The subjects were 568 students (5th, 6th grades) of ten elementary schools in a small city of about 350,000. Subjects self-reported after being instructed by researchers to identify health habits and attitudes toward obesity. The Rohrer index was calculated by using annual physical examinations preformed by the schools. Result: 17.5% of the subjects were under weight, 22.2% were overweight, and 60.3% were normal. In girls, the under weight group was much larger, in boys the overweight group was larger. 46.2% of overweight children had a familial tendency to obesity. 60.6% of boys and 60% of girls were on a diet in order to improve their looks or to prevent ridicule from mends. On average, one-third of the subjects misunderstood their own weight level. Subjects spent 3-4hours on weekdays, and over 6hours on the weekend watching TV or using personal computers. The overweight group enjoyed eating meat, fish, beans and vegetables, while the normal group tended to prefer fruit. Conclusion: Health education programs which guide elementary school students to form better health habits, more accurate perceptions of their own body weight, and better attitudes toward obesity and which make students aware of the importance of exercise, a healthy diet, and reducing time spent in front of TVs and computers may help them to keep at their appropriate weight.
Purpose: This study targeted female university students in their 20s and created an antioxidant improvement program with a health contract, one of the behavioral modification therapies, based on King's (1981) 'goal attainment theory.' The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of physiological indicators, eating habits, dietary attitudes, and health behaviors by conducting a walking exercise and anti-oxidation diet program with reinforcement therapy. Methods: This study had a nonequivalent control group pretestposttest design. There were a total of 50 participants, with 25 participants in the experimental group and 25 participants in the control group and the study period was 10 weeks. The antioxidant improvement program consisted of walking and antioxidant diet education with health contracts. Data analysis was statistically processed using the SPSS/WIN 24.0 program. Results: The program showed a high achievement rate by providing continuous motivation and positive reinforcement during the program, and it affected the eating habits, dietary attitudes, and health behavior. Besides, physiological variables, such as antioxidant indices and body composition showed positive changes. Conclusion: This study, based on the goal attainment theory, confirmed that antioxidant improvement program is an effective nursing intervention for continuous health promotion through interaction and exchange between healthy participants and researchers.
