Effects of Dietary Modification on Plasma Glucose and Insulin Sensitivity in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

  • There is substantial evidence that insulin sensitivity can be enhanced through appropriate dietary management . In this study, insulin sensitivity was evaluated using and insulin suppression test. Male Sprague-Dawley rats, were caused to be in a diabetic condition by the injection of streptozotocin, and divided into four groups. They were fed one of the following diets for 2 weeks : (group 1) a high-carbohydrate(CHO) low-fat low-fiber diet, (group 2) a high CHO low-fat and high-fiber diet, (group 3) a low-CHO high-fat and low-fiber diet, and (group 4) a low-CHO low-fat diet groups (as comparison between group 1 and group 2 shows). In the low-CHO high-fat diet groups, dietary fiber tended to decrease plasma glucose levels at the end of the experiment, but not significantly (as comparison between group 3 and group 4 shows). The average steady state plasma glucose level in rats on the group 3 diet was the highest among all four groups(p<0.05), indicating the poorest insulin sensitivity . However, high fiber increased insulin sensitivity in rats on the low-CHO high-fat diets(as shows by a comparison between group 3 and group 4). On the other hand , the high-CHO low-fat enhanced insulin sensitivity in rats on the low fiber diet(group 1 and group 3). The degree of enhancement of insulin sensitivity depends on the combination of CHO, fat , and fiber in the diet. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that a low-CHO high-fat low -fiber diet may be deleterious to diabetic rats. In view of insulin sensitivity enhancement , dietary fiber level is irrelevant, as long as the diet has a high-CHO and low-fat level.

저칼슘식이가 백서의 하악골 골절치유에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구 (AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MANDIBULAR FRACTURE WOUND HEALING IN THE CALCIUM DEFICIENT RAT)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of osteoporosis on fracture wound healing in the calcium deficient rat. To research the experiment some ten-week old Wistar strain rats with approximately 300 gms weight were selected. Then, the rats were divided into two groups: Normal diet group(rats given a normal diet before and after bone fracture) and Low calcium diet group(rats given a low calcium diet before and after bone fracture). Both groups had been provided with each diet for three weeks. When the rats became thirteen weeks old, the mandibular angle of rats in both groups was artificially fractured for test. The healing of fracture wounds was reviewed by using soft x-ray radiography and /sup 99m/Tc-MDP bone scan and also histopathologic examination. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The radiolucency of the fracture site for the Normal diet group started to decrease from the 14th day since the experiment was made, while the Low calcium diet group began decrease in the radiolucency from the 21st day of the experiment. The radiolucency for the Normal diet group disappeared at the 42nd day, but one for the Low calcium diet group disappeared at the 56th day of the experiment. 2. The highest uptake rate of /sup 99m/Tc-MDP stood at the 14th day of the experiment in the Normal diet group and the Low calcium diet group's maximum rate was recorded at the 21st day of the experiment. These both groups were gradually experiencing decrease in the uptake rate as the experiment time was going on. However, the uptake rate in the Low calcium diet group was lower than one in the Normal diet group. 3. For the Normal diet group, the newly formed trabeculae, which were similar to one of the surroundung bone, were seen at the 42nd day of the experiment. On the other hand, the Low calcium diet group showed at the 56th day of the experiment that the osteoporotic findings looked weak, irregular trabeculae, and also large bone marrow space were observed clearly. As a result of the above experiment, it is said that the healing of the fracture can be completed for both groups, the Normal diet group and the Low calcium diet group. However, the amount of the newly formed bone wound in the Low calcium diet group is rather decreased compared to one in the Normal diet group and at the same time the healing of the fracture is delayed in the Low calcium diet group. Consequently, for the successful healing of fracture in osteoporosis, it is considered that the management of the etiologic factors of osteoporosis must be preceded. The more study of calcium metabolism and functions of osteoblast and osteoclast needs to proceed on.

Effects of The Soy Protein Level on Plasma Glucose, Lipids, and Hormones in Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats

  • The number of diabetics in Korea is about 3 to 5 percent of the population, and the incidence is increasing yearly due to changes of life style and food intake. Diet is a key element in the management of diabetes, yet the appropriate diet for diabetes remains controversial. We have recently shown that a diet rich in protein of animal origin(casein) seems beneficial to controling plasma glucose and lipids in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. It therefore seemed desirable to find out whether the beneficial effect of high casein diet in experimental diabetes could also be reproduced with a vegetable source of protein(soy). The purpose of this study is to compare these results with the results of our previous study. In the present study, non-diabetic and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were studied in order to examine the effects of altering the level(20% vs 60%) of dietary soy protein on blood glucose, lipids, and hormones. Results of the present study showed that a high soy protein diet decreased triglyceride concentration in diabetic rats. However, diabetic rats fed a high soy protein diet were not hypocholesterolemic compared to rats fed a control diet. Moreover, diabetic rats fed a high soy protein diet had significantly increased plasma glucose concentration compared to rats fed a control diet. This study was not able to discern a specific effect of dietary protein level on insulin, glucagon, or insulin/glucagon ratio. Except for the hypotriglyceridemic effect, the results were not similar to the findings of our previous study which showed a beneficial effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats fed a high casein diet.

고지방식이 동물모델에서 크리신 섭취와 유산소 운동이 대식세포 침윤과 지방분해 유전자들에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Aerobic Exercise and Chrysin Supplementation on Macrophage Infiltration and Lipolysis Genes of High-Fat Diet Mice)

  • 본 연구 목적은 유산소운동과 크리신섭취가 고지방식이동물의 간 조직에서 비만억제 효과를 규명하는데 있다. 집단은 정상식이, 고지방식이, 고지방식이와 크리신섭취, 고지방식이와 유산소운동 4집단으로 하였다. 크리신은 체중당 50mg/kg을 구강투여 하였고, 유산소운동은 트레드밀운동으로 주5회 60분 16주간 실시하였다. SPSS(20.0)프로그램을 이용해 일원변량분석(One-way ANOVA)을 하였고, 사후분석은 LSD로 하였다. 연구결과 간 조직에서 대식세포 마커 F480와 M1대식세포 마커 CD11c는 정상식이 그룹과 비교해 고지방식이, 크리신투여 그룹에서 유의하게 증가했고 운동집단에서는 유의하게 감소하였다. 지방분해 마커 PRDM은 정상식이집단과 비교해 고지방식이, 크리신투여 집단에서 유의하게 감소했으나 운동집단에서만 유의하게 증가하였다. 결론적으로 고지방식이와 중강도 운동은 간 조직에서 발생되는 대사적불균형을 억제하는데 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 고지방식이와 크리신 섭취는 비만억제 기능이 미비한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 향후 기능성식품을 이용한 비만개선 연구는 투여용량, 기간 등을 고려해 다양한 분자적 기전을 살펴보는 연구가 보강되어야 할 것이다.

다이어트젤과 전기근육자극기가 허리둘레 감소에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Diet-Gel and Electric Muscle Stimulator on Waist Circumference Reduction)

  • 바쁜 일상 속에서 신체 활동량의 감소와 식생활의 서구화 등으로 인한 복부 비만의 발생률이 높아지고 있다. 따라서 체형 관리에 대한 욕구를 충족시키기 위해 시간 대비 고 효율의 관리 프로그램이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 전기근육자극요법 (electric muscle stimulation therapy)을 활용하여 다이어트젤(슬리밍 화장품)과의 복합사용에 의하여 허리둘레 및 체지방량 (또는 복부의 지방)를 감소 효과를 촉진시켰다. 연구 대상자는 20대 성인 남녀로 다이어트젤을 허리 부위에 단순 도포를 한 후, 그 위에 EMS를 착용하여 기상 후와 취침 전에 1일 2회 20분간 마사지를 실시하였다. 실험 기간은 2주 동안 실시되었다. 지방분해 촉진 효과는 비 조영 CT를 활용하여 피하지방의 감소에 대한 관찰이 되었으며, 이와 함께 허리둘레와 체지방량 측정으로 확인되었다. 결론적으로 개발된 EMS와 다이어트젤의 동시 사용 프로그램은 약 3 cm (p<.001)의 허리둘레 감소와 약 1 kg (p<.01)의 체지방량 감소를 나타내어 허리라인 관리에 탁월한 효과가 있음을 입증하였다. 이는 EMS의 활용이 근육 자극에 의한 마사지 효과를 나타내며 다이어트젤의 흡수를 도와 지방 분해를 촉진시키는 역할을 하는 것으로 사료된다.

부인과 암 생존자와 정상 대조군의 영양소 섭취와 식사의 질(Diet Quality Index-International) 비교 - 2013~2016년 국민건강영양조사 자료이용 - (A Comparisons of Nutritional Intake and Diet Quality Index-International in Gynecological Cancer Survivors and Normal Women - Using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013~2016 -)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the nutritional intake and Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) of gynecological cancer survivors and normal women. Methods: This study compared the anthropometric indices, dietary behavior, nutritional intake, and DQI-I in women with previous history of breast or uterine cancer [Gynecological cancer survivors group (GCSG, n=126)] and normal women [Normal control group (NCG, n=7,011)] using the 2013~2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Results: Body mass index and waist circumference were lower in the GCSG compared the NCG. The frequency of skipping breakfast and eating out was higher in the NCG compared to GCSG. Energy and fat intake were significantly higher in the NCG than in the GCSG, whereas intake of all minerals and vitamins (excluding thiamine), and dietary fiber intake were higher in GCSG. It was observed that the fatty acid intake of the GCSG was significantly lower than that of the NCG. The diet quality evaluation using DQI-I results showed that GCSG was higher in the "within-group" diet variety and adequacy of vegetable group than the NCG, whereas the intake level of the fruit group was higher in NCG. Besides, protein, calcium, and vitamin C intake were higher in the GCSG than in the NCG. The GCSG showed higher levels of total fat and saturated fat moderation than the NCG, whereas cholesterol moderation showed the opposite results. The results of DQI-I comparison according to the cancer survival years showed that the overall score and scores related to diet adequacy and balance were higher in the below 5-year group, whereas the over 5-year group scored higher in terms of moderation of diet. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that a chronic disease based management approach is needed in cancer survivors. The study provides important data which can help in the preparation of guidelines for long-term lifestyle and diet management, in these patients.

백미밥과 잡곡밥의 당지수 차이가 열량 섭취량 및 포만감에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Glycemic Index for Boiled White Rice and Boiled White Rice Mixed with Grains on Food Consumption and Satiety Rate)

  • In this study, we examined whether the glycemic index (GI) values of boiled white rice (GI=86) and boiled white rice mixed with grains (GI=58) could influence the total energy intake and satiety rate of a rice-based diet. Thirty adult females participated in this study, in which they ate boiled white rice, or boiled white rice mixed with grains, along with side dishes for lunch, and then ate the same white rice diet for dinner in the lab once a week for 2 weeks. There was no significant difference in the visual analogue scales for taste between the two diets. Although there were no differences between the subjects' energy intakes for side dishes, the total energy consumed from the boiled white rice mixed with grains diet (520.5 kcal) was significantly (p<0.001) lower than that consumed from the boiled white rice diet (560.2 kcal). For dinner, the subjects consumed significantly (p<0.001) lower calories when they had eaten the boiled white rice mixed with grains diet for lunch as compared to the boiled white rice diet. In addition, the subjects reported significantly (p<0.01, p<0.001) higher satiety rates after consuming the boiled white rice mixed with grains diet compared to the boiled white rice diet, despite consuming lower calories. In conclusion, these results indicate that consuming low GI rice such as boiled white rice mixed with grains substituted for boiled white rice, may be a useful strategy for weight loss and weight management since individuals will consume less energy without experiencing a reduction in satiety.

여대생들의 비만도, 신체에 대한 태도 및 식이조절에 대한 연구 (BMI, Body Attitude and Dieting Among College Women)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between objective obesity, subjective obesity, body attitudes and dieting among college women. Method: The convenience sample consisted of 531 women. BMI was calculated based on self-reported weight and height. Body Attitudes Questionnaire (BAQ) was used to evaluate attitude toward women's body. Result: BMI mean score was 19.75. Based on BMI, 84.2 percent of the subjects were in a normal weight range and 0.9 percent of the subjects were obese. However, 26.9 percent of the subjects evaluated themselves as obese. Forty-one percent of the subjects were on a diet to reduce thier body weight. Body attitudes were associated with BMI and subjective obesity. BMI of the dieters was higher than that of the subjects who were not on a diet. Subjective obesity was associated with dieting. BAQ subscales except 'attractiveness' were associated with dieting. Conclusion: Many subjects were on a diet since they wanted to be thinner. Body attitudes were associated with dieting. Therefore, proper education is needed in weight management for young adult women.

Effect of Chlorella vulgaris intake on cadmium detoxification in rats fed cadmium

  • The aim of this study was to investigate if dietary Chlorella vulgaris(chlorella) intake would be effective on cadmium(Cd) detoxification in rats fed dietary Cd. Fourteen-week old male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats weighing $415.0{\pm}1.6\;g$ were randomly divided into two groups and fed slightly modified American Institute of Nutrition-93 Growing(AIN-93G) diet without(n=10) or with(n=40) dietary Cd(200 ppm) for 8 weeks. To confirm alteration by dietary Cd intake, twenty rats fed AIN-93G diet without(n=10) and with(n=10) dietary Cd were sacrificed and compared. Other thirty rats were randomly blocked into three groups and fed slightly modified AIN-93G diets replacing 0 (n=10), 5 (n=10) or 10% (n=10) chlorella of total kg diet for 4 weeks. Daily food intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weight (liver, spleen, and kidney), perirenal fat pad and epididymal fat pad weights were measured. To examine Cd detoxification, urinary Cd excretion and metallothonein (MT) concentrations in kidney and intestine were measured. Food intake, calorie intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weight and fat pad weights were decreased by dietary Cd intake. Urinary Cd excretion and MT concentrations in kidney and small intestine were increased by dietary Cd. After given Cd containing diet, food intake, calorie intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weights and fat pad weights were not influenced by dietary chlorella intake. Renal MT synthesis tended to be higher in a dose-dependent manner, but not significantly. And chlorella intake did not significantly facilitate renal and intestinal MT synthesis and urinary Cd excretion. These findings suggest that, after stopping cadmium supply, chlorella supplementation, regardless of its percentage, might not improve cadmium detoxification from the body in growing rats.

저수온기 참돔 치어의 성장 및 체조성에 미치는 사료내 지질의 영향 (Effects of Dietary Lipid Level on Growth and Body Composition of Juvenile Red Sea Bream (Pagurus major) during Winter)

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of dietary lipid level on growth and body composition of juvenile red sea bream in low temperatures. Duplicate groups of fish (initial body weight of 79 g) were fed one of three isonitronic diets (47% crude protein) containing different lipid levels (10%, 17% and 22%) for 25 weeks during the winter season. Weight gain and survival of fish fed 17% lipid diet were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fish fed the 10% or 22% lipid diet. Protein efficiency ratio, daily feed intake, condition factor, hepatosomatic index and viscerasomatic index were not affected by dietary lipid level, but feed efficiency of fish fed 10% lipid diet was significantly (P<0.05) lower than those fish fed the 17% or 22% lipid diet. Proximate composition of the whole body, liver, viscera and dorsal muscle were not significantly different among all groups except for crude protein content of dorsal muscle. The contents of 16:0, 18:0, 20:4n-3 and 20:5n-3 of the whole body were significantly (P<0.05) affected by dietary lipid level. The results of this study suggest that an increased dietary lipid level from 10% to 17% can improve growth of juvenile red sea bream in low temperature periods.
