Recently, 1-D model-based engine development using virtual engine system is getting more attention than experimental-based engine development due to the advantages in time and cost. Injection rate profile is the one of the main parameters that determine the start and end of combustion. Therefore, it is essential to set up a sophisticated model to accurately predict the injection rate as starting point of virtual engine system. In this research, procedure of 1-D model setup based on AMESim is introduced to predict the dynamic behavior and injection rate of diesel injector. As a first step, detailed 3D cross-sectional drawing of the injector was achieved, which can be done with help of precision measurement system. Then an approximate AMESim model was provided based on the 3D drawing, which is composed of three part such as solenoid part, control chamber part and needle and nozzle orifice part. However, validation results in terms of total injection quantity showed some errors over the acceptable level. Therefore, experimental work including needle movement visualization, solenoid part analysis and flow characteristics of injector part was performed together to provide more accuracy of 1-D model. Finally, 1-D model with the accuracy of less than 10% of error compared with experimental result in terms of injection quantity and injection rate shape under normal temperature and single injection condition was established. Further work considering fuel temperature and multiple injection will be performed.

In this paper, we built a three-dimensional model by applying reverse engineering techniques on targeting the intake port of 2900cc class diesel engine before that three-dimensional design technique is applied. The performance of the intake port is predicted and analysed using the computational flow analysis. Flow Coefficient and Swirl Ratio have been analyzed for two intake port models. One is the intake port for the diesel engine with plunger-type fuel system, and the other is for the diesel engine with CRDI fuel system. Computational result shows that the Flow Coefficient of the intake port with CRDI fuel system is increased upto 10 percentage compared with that with plunger-type. Also, the intake port with plunger-type has high Swirl Ratio at high valve lift, and the intake port with CRDI fuel system has high Swirl Ratio at relatively low valve lift. It is believed that because of high performance of the fuel injector, the intake port with CRDI fuel system is designed for more air amount and not much swirl flow at high valve lift. However, high swirl flow is required at low valve lift for initial fuel and air mixing. The result of this study may be useful for the re-manufacturing industry of automotive parts.

Effect of ethene on the $DeNO_X$ conversion process in a simulated diesel engine operating conditions was investigated experimentally and theoretically. With the addition of even a small amount of ethene the NO to $NO_2$ conversion enhances greatly. The energy required to convert one NO molecule is 27 eV with 250 ppm ethene added, while 137 eV without ethene at 473 K. The effect of energy density, temperature, and the initial concentrations of ethene and oxygen are also discussed and the results show that the increase of the mentioned parameters lead to the promotion of NO oxidation. A kinetic model used in this study shows good agreement with the experimental result. Byproducts like formaldehyde ($CH_2$ 0) and methyl nitrite ($CH_3$ ONO) predicted by model calculation are broken up into CO and $H_2O$ eventually when high energy is delivered to the gas mixture. Sensitivity analysis shows that the main reactions of NO oxidation when ethene is added we: $HO_2+ NO \arrow NO_2 + OH, RO_2 + NO \arrow NO_2 + RO$, where R is a hydrocarbon radical. Also the direct oxidizing reaction of NO with O cannot be neglected.
Diesel engines with compression-ignition type have superior thermal efficiency, durability and reliability compared to gasoline engine. To control emitted gas from the engines, it can be applied to alternative fuel without any modification to the engine. Therefore, in this study, as a basic study for applying emulsified fuel to the actual diesel engine, analysis of spray behavior characteristics of emulsified fuel was carried out simultaneously by experimental and numerical method. The emulsified fuel consist of diesel, hydrogen peroxide, and surfactant. The surfactant for manufacturing emulsified fuel is comprised of span 80 and tween 80 mixed as 9:1 and fixed with 3% of the total volume of the emulsified fuel. In addition, six kinds of emulsified fuel(EF0, EF2, EF12, EF22, EF32, and EF42) were manufactured according to the mixing ratio of hydrogen peroxide. The droplet and spray experiments were performed to observe the behavior characteristics of the emulsified fuel. The numerical analysis was carried out using ANSYS CFX to confirm the microscopic behavior characteristics. Consequently, rapid mixture formation can be expected due to evaporation of hydrogen peroxide in emulsified fuel, and it is confirmed that Reitz&Diwakar breakup model is most suitable as breakup model to be applied to the numerical analysis.
The effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.I. diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter / Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber were meadured. Also, the combustion characteristics compared of the experimented and the calculated values which is used by the Hiroyasu's combustion model. The results are as follows; The effect of $d_c/H$ on ignition delay period are small. The smoke is corerelated to the heat release of the premixed and the diffusion combustion, i.g, the smoke decreased by decreasing the premixed combustion or increasing the diffusion combustion on cumulative heat release. The premixed combustion process has more effect than the diffusion combustion on smoke. The formal tendency of $d_c/H$ on engine performance has not appear.

Duties required for naval ship such as anti-submarine, anti-ship, and supply, etc are diversified, so the ECS (Enfineering Control System) is required for executing the mission effectively. The ECS monitors and controls the propulsion system in order that naval ship can perform the mission. As the in-country development of ECS is progressed, a test system for ECS is needed, and a naval ship propulsion system simulator based on CODOG was developed on this study. The naval ship propulsion system simulator based on CODOG which is divided into gas turbine model, diesel engine model, reduction gear model and controllable pitch propeller model, simulates to feedback of control commands of ECS. As a result of the experiment, it is able to confirm speed, torque and power, etc. of the gas turbine, diesel engine and shaft according to ECS propulsion mode.

In order to design a diesel engine system and predict its performance, it is necessary to analyze the gas flow of the intake and exhaust system. A gas flow analysis in three-dimensional (3D) format needs a high-resolution workstation and enormous time for analysis. Therefore, the method of characteristics (MOC) was used for a gas flow analysis with a fast calculation time and a low-resolution workstation. An experiment was conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine to measure pressure in cylinder, intake pipe and exhaust pipe. The one-dimensional (1D) gas flow was analyzed under the same conditions as the experiment. The engine speed, valve timing and compression ratio were the same conditions and the intake pressure was inputted as the experimental results. Bent pipe such as an exhaust port that cannot be realized in 1D was omitted. As results of validation, the cylinder pressure showed accuracy, but the exhaust pipe pressure exhibited inaccuracy. This is considered as an error caused by the failure to implement a bent pipe such as an exhaust port. When analyzed in 3D, calculation time required 61 hours more based on a model of this study. In the future, we intend to implement a bent pipe that cannot be realized in 1D using 3D and prepare a method to supplement reliability by using 1D-3D coupling.

In this study, numerical calculation is carried out to investigate the influence of injection timing, fuel amount, intake $O_2$ concentration, and EGR on Nitric Oxide(NO) formation using a two-zone model in a diesel engine. Results can be summarized as follows. The NO formation is very sensitive to the burned gas temperature, so multi-zone model must be applied to combustion process to predict the burned gas temperature exactly. Since the burned gas temperature increases rapidly during the premixed combustion, most NO is formed within 20 crank angle degrees after ignition. As the injection timing is retarded, the combustion occurs later in the expansion process which causes the decrease of burned gas temperature and, as a result, NO formation decrease. The increase of fuel amount results in the increase of earlier formation of NO in the engine. As the intake $O_2$ concentration increases, the maximum pressure and burned gas temperature increase due to activate combustion. And, [O] mole fraction of equilibrium combustion products also increase. Therefore NO exponentially increases. If exhaust gas is recirculated, the burned gas temperature decreases which results in NO decrease. If exhaust gas is cooled, more NO can be decreased.

In 1980 s to 1990 s the marine propulsion diesel engines have been developed into lower speed and longer stroke for the enegy saving (small S.F.O.C). As these new trends the conventional mechanical-hydraulic governors were not adapted to the new requirements and the digital governors have been adopted in the marine use. The digital governors usually use the control algorithms such as the PID control, optimal control, adaptive control and etc. While the engine has delay time and parameter variations these control algorithms have difficulty in considering the stability and the robustness for the model uncertainty. In this study, the $H_{\infty}$ controller design method are applied in order to design the feedback controller K(s) to the speed control of the low speed marine diesel engine, and the two-degree-of-freedom control system is constituted with $H_{\infty}$controller. By comparison of responses of the two-degree-of-freedom control system under the delay time and parameter variations is confirmed.
