High thermal efficiency and the ability to use various types of fuel are a few of the many advantages of diesel engines. However, a major disadvantage is that their exhaust emissions are more harmful to humans and the environment than that of conventional engine. Consequently, the provisions of the international emissions standards for diesel engine equipped passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and ships have become more stringent. These standards include the EU Euro 6, the IMO MEPC Tier 3, and the US EPA Tier 4. Ryu et al. published a study that applied fuel additives to two-stroke diesel engines. In this study, a four-stroke diesel engine using diesel oil for a generator is utilized as the test subject, and an experiment is performed to verify whether fuel additive can be used to improve performance and exhaust emissions. In addition, this experimental study presents research results for the application of fuel additives in both two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines. The experimental results were compared and analyzed by placing an oil-soluble calcium-based organometallic compound in diesel oil. The results confirmed that the addition of fuel additive improved the performance (fuel consumption rate, exhaust gas temperature) and exhaust emissions (NOx, CO) of the diesel engine.

The purpose of this work is an experimental investigation of combustion and emission characteristics in DI diesel engine applied high EGR rate as a method of low-temperature combustion. In order to analyze the effect of EGR rate variation, a single-cylinder DI diesel engine was operated under various EGR rate conditions. In addition, injection timing was variously controlled to investigate the effect of injection timing in DI diesel engine using the cooled-EGR system. The NOx emissions were decreased in accordance with the increase of EGR rate. On the contrary, soot emissions were generally increased under applied EGR conditions. However, soot emissions were decreased in a few injection timings under high EGR rate conditions. The EGR results show that the ignition delay were increased by decreased oxygen concentrations in combustion chamber under the high EGR rate.

The effects of high pressure and low pressure exhaust gas recirculation (HP/LP EGR) portion on diesel engine combustion and emissions characteristics were investigated in a 2.2 L passenger-car diesel engine. The po3rtion of HP/LP EGR was varied from 0 to 1 while fixing the mass flow rate of fresh air. The intake manifold temperature was lowered with the increasing of the portion of LP EGR, which led to the retardation of heat release by pilot injection. The lowered intake manifold temperature also resulted in low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions due to decreased in-cylinder temperature and prolonged ignition delay, however, the carbon monoxide (CO) emission showed opposite trend to NOx emissions. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was decreased as the portion of LP EGR increased due to lowered exhaust manifold pressure by wider open of turbocharger vane. Consequently, the trade-off relationship between NOx and BSFC could be improved by increasing the LP EGR portion.
This study was carried out to investigate the usability of the used frying oil, which was extracted from soybean, as one of the alternative fuel of a small diesel engine. For the experiment, NO. 2 diesel oil [D], used frying oil [UF], and their volumetric blends were applied and analysis of the properties and compositions of the experimental fuels were conducted. A four cycle diesel engine with single cylinder, water cooling system, maximum output 8.1 ㎾/2,200 rpm was selected and a direct injection chamber and a precombustion chamber were attached alternately. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Engine power (BHP) were increased from 4.13~4.27㎾ to 9.08~9.15㎾ for diesel oil, from 4.05~4.19㎾ to 8.44~8.92㎾ for UF, and from 4.01~4.48㎾ to 8.69~9.16㎾ for blend fuel, as the engine speed increased from 1,000 rpm to 2,200 rpm. The BHP in case of the direct combustion chamber were fluctuated higher than those of the pre-combustion chamber. 2. With the engine speed increased, torque of the engine were increased from 39.50~40.80 N.m to 42.89 N.m, then decreased to 39.44~39.77 N.m for diesel oil, and increased from 38.73~40.04 N.m to 40.12~40.82 N.m then decreased as 36.53~38.76 N.m for UF. Torque of the blend fuels were increased from 38.75~41.76 N.m to 40.47~42.89 N.m then decreased to 37.73~39.78 N.m. There is no significant difference of torque between the type of combustion chambers. 3. The specific fuel consumption of the UF was increased about 20 percent depending on the engine speed variations. And in case of direct injection chamber, about 12 percent lower fuel consumption was observed than that of precombustion chamber. 4. NOx emission of the UF was higher than that of diesel oil at above 1,800rpm of the engine speed. In case of the direct injection chamber, NOx emission was revealed higher about 59 percent than that of the precombustion chamber, depending on the range of the engine speeds. 5. Smoke emission was decreased in case of UF compared with diesel oil on direct injection chamber. When using precombustion chamber smoke emission was a little higher than that of the direct injection chamber were showed at the engine speed range. 6. At all the engine speed range, exhaust gas temperatures were decreased 2~3$^{\circ}C$ for UF used engine compared with those of the diesel oil. The exhaust gas temperature of the direct injection chamber was higher than that of the precombustion chamber by 72$^{\circ}C$. 7. Unburnt materials remained in the cylinder in case of the pre-combustion chamber was smaller and softer than that of the direct combustion chamber. 8. The feasibility of the blend fuel B-1 and B-2 were verified as a direct combustion chamber was attached to the diesel engine, with respect to the power performance of the engine.

Recently, a great deal of attention have been directed to the use of alternative fuels as a means to reduce vehicular emissions. As one of the promising alternative fuels, bio-diesel has advantages of a wide adaptability without retrofit of diesel engine. It is also effective enough to reduce CO, THC, $SO_x$, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and PM. In this study, we investigated the emission characteristics of biofuels between different operating conditions, i.e., engine speed (1,400 rpm and 2,300 rpm), engine load (10% and 100%), bio-diesel blending (BD0, BD5 and BD20), and recirculation (EGR) rate of exhaust gas (0% and 20%). Relative performance of the system was evaluated mainly for the greenhouse gases ($CH_4$, $N_2O$ and $CO_2$). In addition, emission characteristics of ND-13 mode were also tested against both greenhouse gases and other airborne pollutants under emission regulation. The relative composition of bio-diesel has shown fairly clear effects on the emission quantities of CO, THC, and PM emission, although it was not on $NO_x$ and greenhouse gases. EGR rate has shown trade-off characteristics between $NO_x$ and PM.

The exhaust gas discharged by cars not only threatens the health of the human body, but also contributes to global warming, due to the resulting increase in the concentrations of ozone, fine dust and carbon dioxide. Therefore, the government has steadily implemented careful inspection systems for exhaust emissions, in order to efficiently regulate the exhaust gas of cars. Studies on reducing the exhaust emissions of automobiles have been conducted in various fields, including ones designed to reduce the generation of HC, NOx, and $CO_2$ in the exhaust emission of vehicles. However, there have been insufficient studies on the reduction of the exhaust emission for old diesel vehicles. To develop careful inspection systems for the exhaust emissions of old diesel vehicles, studies on the reduction of the exhaust emissions and improvement of power are necessary by cleaning the carbon sediment in both the intake manifold and injector. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed and compared the amounts of gas emitted when simultaneously cleaning or not cleaning the intake manifold and injector of diesel automobiles with mileages over 80,000 km and operating periods over 5 years. The experimental results showed that in the case where the intake manifold and injector were simultaneously cleaned, there was a decline of 75.2% in the gas emission compared to the cases where only the manifold or injector is cleaned. Also, it was found that simultaneously cleansing the intake manifold and injector enabled the exhaust standard to be satisfied for less than 30% within 8.5 sec.

The direct injection(DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides(NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing a suitable after treatment device has been increased. NOx absorbing catalysts are based on the concept of NOx storage and release making it possible to reduce NOx emission in net oxidizing gas conditions. This De-NOx system, called the LNT(Lean NOx Trap) catalyst, absorbs NOx in lean exhaust gas conditions and release it in rich conditions. This technology can give high NOx conversion efficiency, but the right amount of reducing agent should be supplied into the catalytic converter at the right time. In this research, a performance characteristics of LNT with a hydrogen enriched gas as a reductant was examined and strategies of controlling the injection and rich exhaust gas condition were studied. The NOx reduction efficiency is closely connected to the injection timing and duration of reductant. LNT can reduce NOx efficiently with only 1 % fuel penalty.

Environmental regulations are being reinforced for the solution of environmental pollution, that are global issues. Exhaust gas regulations of off-road engines also demand stepwise reduction emission from beginning of Tier 4 interim(2013). Characteristically, Tier 4 regulation apply the NRTC mode which is a transient cycle. And technical studies using NRTC mode are uncommon. In this study, for satisfy the Tier 4 final regulation on the NRTC mode, experimental study was conducted using a 3.4 L off-road engine. Fuel injection timing and injector hole number are chosen as parameters for investigation of combustion and exhaust gas characteristics on off-road diesel engine.
The dual-fuel technology, which uses gaseous fuel as the main fuel and liquid as the pilot fuel, is an appealing technology for reducing the exhaust emissions. The current study proposes emission models based on ANFIS for a dual-fuel using producer gas (PG)-diesel engine. Emissions measurements were taken at different engine load levels and fuel injection timings. The proposed model predictions were examined using statistical methods. With R2 values in the range of 0.9903 to 0.9951, the established ANFIS model was found to be consistently robust in predicting emission characteristics. The mean absolute percentage deviate in range 1.9 to 4.6%, and mean squared error varies in range 0.0018 to 13.9%. The evaluation of the ANFIS model developed shows a reliable claim of intrinsic sensitivity, strength, and outstanding generalization. The presented meta-model can be used to simulate the engine's operation in order to create an efficient control tool.

Intake air conditions, such as air temperature, pressure, and humidity, are very important parameters that influence engine performance including combustion and emissions characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of intake air temperature on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics in a single cylinder diesel engine. In this experiment, an air cooler and a heater were installed on the intake air line and a gas flow controller was installed to maintain the flow rate. It was found that intake air temperature induced the evaporation characteristics of the fuel, and it affects the maximum in-cylinder pressure, IMEP(indicated mean effective pressure), and fuel consumption. As the temperature of intake air decreases, the fuel evaporation characteristics deteriorate even as the fuel temperature has reached the auto-ignition temperature, so that ignition delay is prolonged and the maximum pressure of cylinder is also reduced. Based on the increase in intake air temperature, nitrogen oxides(NOx) increased. In addition, the carbon monoxide(CO) and unburned hydrocarbons(UHC) increased due to incomplete fuel combustion at low intake air temperatures.
