상용 커먼레일 디젤기관에서 바이오디젤유(20%) 적용시 내구특성 및 배기배출물 특성 연구 (A Study on Characteristics for Emission Characteristics and Durability with Biodiesel Fuel(20%) in a Commercial Common Rail Type Diesel Engine)

  • A CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with 20% biodiesel fuel(BDF 20) in excess of 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The engine performance and exhaust emissions were sampled at 1 hour interval for analysis, Also, BSEC with BDF 20 resulted in lower than with diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel used in this study includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, BDF 20 resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions without special increase of oxides of nitrogen than diesel fuel. It was concluded that there was no unusual deterioration of the engine, or any unusual change in exhaust emissions from using the BDF 20.

  • The demand of diesel engine on the construction equipment has been rapidly increased because of thermal efficiency and power. But some of the construction equipment is imported from other country, since the their demands are not so large as compared with the other construction equipment. The imported construction equipments will be tested for emission with standard measurement mode. This study was conducted to measure emission characteristics of the construction equipment with changed standard measurement experimentally.

Influence of Injection Rate Shaping on Combustion and Emissions for a Medium Duty Diesel Engine

  • This paper describes the effects of injection rate shaping on the combustion, fuel consumption and emission of $NO_x$ and soot of a medium duty diesel engine. The focus is on the influence of four different injection rate shapes, square type 1, square type 2, boot and ramp, with a variation of maximum injection pressure and start of injection (SOI). The experiments were carried out on a 1 liter single cylinder research diesel engine equipped with an amplifier-piston common rail injection system, allowing the adjustment of the injection pressure during the injection event and thus injection rate as desired. Two strategies to maintain the injected fuel mass constant were followed. One where rate shaping is applied at constant injection duration with different peak injection pressure and one strategy where rate shaping is applied at a constant peak injection pressure, but with variable injection duration. Injection rate shaping was found to have a large effect on the premixed and diffusion combustion, a significant influence on $NO_x$ emissions and depending on the followed strategy, moderate or no influence on soot emission. Only small effects on indicated fuel consumption were found.

  • Recently, with respect to an increase of energy consumption, many countries have tried to develop alternative fuels. In the United States, less than 10 percent of motor fuels will be displaced by alternative fuels by year 2010, with about 25 percent of the replacement fuels from renewable resources. But the level of exhaust gas is not decreased to the result of an increase of diesel vehicles. Moreover, emission regulations are being intensified by advanced countries such as America and Europe. Because Biodiesel is similar to diesel fuel, it is essential to judge the environmental and health effects deriving from the use of Biodiesel in diesel engine. Therefore, this research could be conformed whether both Biodiesel 20% and Biodiesel 100% are influenced on emission according to sulfur contents by applying DOC. As a result of using the Biodiesel, this research could be conformed though Nox was increased, CO, HC and PM were decreased, and also estimated to compare diesel fuel with the Biodiesel in accordance with engine performance and emission characteristics.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong. In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated D.I. diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel was reduced remarkably in com parison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 48.5% at 2500rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have no large differences. But, $NO_X$ emission of biodiesel fuel was increased com pared with commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of $NO_X$ emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and $NO_X$ was achieved with biodiesel fuel(20vol-%) and cooled EGR method($5{\sim}15%$).

  • Recently, many researchers have been studied a D.I. diesel engine because of the exhaust gas restriction and fuel consumption performance. It is well known that the fuel injection characteristics are the key factors on the diesel combustion and exhaust emission. In this study, the fuel injection characteristics of 5-hole injector and the combustion characteristics are investigated with the amount of fuel by means of the visualization method and visualization D.I. diesel engine system. As the results of the experiments, the spray pattern of the fuel injection and the diffusion flame of a D.I. diesel engine are clarified. In addition, combustion phenomena with operation conditions such as engine speed and engine load are made clear.

소형 어선용 디젤기관에서의 연료유 성상에 따른 배기배출물 특성에 관한 연구 (An experimental study on characteristics of exhaust emissions with fuel properties changes in a diesel engine for small-sized fishing vessel)

  • In order to test the applicability of bunker-A in a diesel engine for small-fishing boat, the investigation of the engine performance and the exhaust emission was performed under various conditions of fuel property, intake air pressure and fuel temperature. It was also performed based on IMO NOx Technical code. At high load, the energy consumption rate of bunker-A was lower than that of diesel oil, and the characteristics of exhaust emission of bunker-A were similar to those, and NOx emission rates of both fuels satisfied the IMO NOx emission regulation limits. The energy consumption rate and characteristics of exhaust emission were improved as the intake air pressure was increased, but these were not improved remarkably as the temperature of bunker-A was heated. However, at low load the energy consumption rate, CO emission rate and HC emission rate of bunker-A were higher than those of diesel oil, but NOx emission rates of the fuels were about the same. In addition, at low load the energy consumption rate and CO emission rate of bunker-A were increased as the intake air pressure and the temperature were higher than normal conditions. Accordingly, it is thought that the use of bunker-A in a kind of test engine is possible at high load. On the other hand, it is thought that more research is needed to improve the combustion efficiency under low temperature and low load condition.

  • The increasing numbers of automobiles keep causing air-pollution problems worse than ever. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modern technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. This research emphasized on the development of Continuously Regenerating DPF technology which was the best particulate matters removing technology of current existing technology because of its superior comparability and high applicability. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a Continuously Regenerating DPF ona displacement 7,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on engine performance and characteristics on exhaust emissions with the application of a Continuously Regenerating DPF in a heavy-duty diesel vehicle.

  • In this study, the effects of intake valve closing timing by using Cam-in-Cam system on combustion and emission characteristics for diesel engine were investigated under GT-POWER simulation environment. As a result, it was found that volumetric efficiency and effective compression ratio were decreased as the intake valve closing(IVC) timing is retarded due to its backflow effect. Also, we found that in-cylinder pressure, heat release rate and NOx emission were decreased as IVC timing was retarded. These show that the LIVC(late intake valve closing) can be effective to control AFR and mixing rate in diffusion combustion of diesel engine.

와류실식 소형디젤기관의 배기 성능에 관한 연구 (Study on exhaust emission at the swirl chamber in small diesel engine)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the performance of swirl combustion chamber diesel engine by changing the jet passage area, the depth and shape of the piston top cavity (main chamber). The performance of diesel engine with newly changed swirl combustion chamber was tested through the experimental conditions as engine speed, load and injection timing etc. The test results were compared and analyzed. And another purpose of this research is to make a new diesel engine that is satisfied fuel consumption and regulation value of exhaust gas. 1. The rate of fuel consumption was affected significantly by the jet passage area at the high speed and load than low speed and low load. The influence of jet passage large area was proven to decrease the rate of fuel consumption. 2. Smoke was affected significantly by the depth of the piston top cavity, but exhaust temperature and the rate of fuel consumption wasn't affected. The rate of fuel consumption was affected by changing injection timing. 3. The rate of fuel consumption, exhaust temperature and Smoke were affected significantly by the shape of the piston top cavity from rectangular to trapezoid. That is we have all high value. The exhaust smoke density and exhaust gas temperature depended sensitively on variation of the injection timing rather than the shape of the combustion chamber within the experimental conditions. 4. We made a new diesel engine that is satisfied design target values(sfc=190 g/hr, NOx + THC=6.0 g/KWh, PM=0.3 KWh), the rate of fuel consumption and emission standard etc., through changing injection timing at the maximum torque point and rated power point. Although we have a little high NOx value.
