The study aims at quantifying the effect of nano technology in the fields of economics and social aspects by using the methodology of system dynamics. A case study which using selenium oxide nanoparticles as additive agent in order to enhance fuel efficiency was selected as an example of nano technology in economic and societal benefits. Additionally, models for exhaust gas from combustion of fuel (diesel) and related issues are developed to evaluate real-time assessment of the effect of nano technology. It was found that the selenium oxide nanoparticles increase fuel efficiency, and it also affects on the amount of exhaust gas and the respiratory disease related issues. The results of this study which give quantitative value for the effect of nano technology can be used as objective references in development of national policy.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the seasonal variation of PAHs and to estimate their source characteristics in Taegu area. To do this, four sampling sites were selected to represent an industrial, a traffic, a traffic & residential, and a residential area in Taegu. Total of 72 samples had been collected from January, 1999 to September, 1999 on glass micro fiber filters by high volume air sampler. The PAHs in the total suspended particulate were extracted by a soxhlet process with dichloromethane and analyzed by GC/MSD, GC/FID. A statistical analysis was performed for the PAHs data set using a principal component analysis to derive important factor inherent in the interactions among the variables. The specific conclusions of this research are: 1) There was a significant seasonal and local variation in the atmospheric concentration of PAHs. The seasonal variation is winter>spring>Fall>summer, and the local variation is industrial>traffic>graffic & residential>residential area. 2) To evaluate the correlation between a measured PAHs and other affecting factors such as air pollutant concentration and meterological data, statistical analysis was performed. PAHs have negative correlation with temperature (r=-0.593, p<0.05), radiation(r=-0.535, p<0.05), and O3(r=-0.719, p<0.05), but have positive correlation with NO(r=0.615, p<0.05) 3)Finally, multivariate analysis was performed for the PAHs dat set to identify and to estimate the source contributions of PAHs. According to results of statistical analysis, it could be identifies as three factors such as vehicular/gasoline, vehicular/diesel, and combustion in Taegu area.
The purpose of this study is preventing the stick, scuffing, scratch between piston and cylinder in advance, and obtaining data for duration test in actual engine operation. The temperature gradient in cylinder bore according to coolant temperature were measured using $1.5{\ell}$ class diesel engine. 20 thermocouples were installed 2mm deep inside from cylinder wall near top ring of piston in cylinder block, at which points major thermal loads exist. It is suggested as proper measurement points for engine design by industrial engineers. Under full load and $70^{\circ}$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$ coolant temperature conditions, the temperature in cylinder block and engine oil increased gradually according to the increase of coolant temperature, the siamese side temperature of top dead center is $142^{\circ}C$ in peripheral distribution, that is about $20^{\circ}C$ higher than that at thrust, anti-thrust, and rear side temperature, respectively. The maximum pressure of combustion gas in $70^{\circ}C$ coolant temperature is about 2 bar lower than those of $80^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$ coolant temperature. The engine torque in $80^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ coolant temperature condition is about 4.9Nm higher than that of $70^{\circ}C$ coolant temperature.
The reduction of nitrogen to produce ammonia has been attracting much attention as a renewable energy technology. Ammonia is the basis for many fertilizers and is also considered an energy carrier that can power internal combustion engines, diesel engines, gas turbines, and fuel cells. Traditionally, ammonia has been produced through the Haber-Bosch process, in which atmospheric nitrogen combines with hydrogen at high temperature ($350-550^{\circ}C$) and high pressure (150-300 bar). This process consumes 1-2% of current global energy production and relies on fossil fuels as an energy source. Reducing the energy input required for this process will reduce $CO_2$ emissions and the corresponding environmental impact. For this reason, developing electrochemical ammonia-production methods under ambient temperature and pressure conditions should significantly reduce the energy input required to produce ammonia. In this review, we introduce the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction at ambient condition. Numerical studies on the electrochemical nitrogen reduction mechanism have been carried out through the computation of density function theory. Electrodes such as nanowires and porous electrodes have been also actively studied for further participation in electrochemical reactions.

Background: We recently reported that Salvia plebeia R. Br. extracts suppress leukotriene production and effectively inhibit the airway inflammatory response by modulating inflammatory chemokine and cytokine expression. Here, we investigated the synergistic airway anti-inflammation effect of Salvia plebeia and Panax ginseng (Korean red ginseng, KRG) that has been used to treat various immune diseases such as asthma. Methods and Results: To evaluate the synergistic airway anti-inflammatory effect of Salvia plebeia and KRG, we measured the inhibitory effect of monotheraphy with either or co-theraphy with both on leukotriene and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Using coal a combustion, fly ash, and diesel exhaust particle (CFD)-induced respiratory disease mouse model, we found that co-theraphy synergistically suppressed airway inflammatory signs such as alveolar wall thickness and collagen fibers deposition, and decreased the number of total cell, $CD11b^+Gr-1^+$ cells, and inflammatory cytokines (IL17A, TNF, MIP-2 and CXCL-1) in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Conclusions: We confirmed respiratory protection as a therapeutic effect of the Salbia plebeia-KRG 3 : 1 complex (KGC-03-PS) via anti-tracheal muscle contraction and expectorant animal studies using a CFD-induced respiratory disease mouse model.
To estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, we established inventory of conventional rice cultivation from farmers in Gunsan and Iksan, Jeonbuk province in 2011~2012. This study was to calculate carbon footprint and to analyse the major factor of GHGs. We carried out a sensitivity analysis using the analyzed main factors of GHGs and estimated the mitigation potential of GHGs. Also we tried to suggest agricultural methods to reduce GHGs that farmers of this case study can apply. Carbon footprint of rice production unit of 1 kg was 2.21 kg $CO_2.-eq.kg^{-1}$. Although amount of $CO_2$ emissions is largest among GHGs, methane had the highest contribution of carbon footprint on rice production system after methane was converted to carbon dioxide equivalent ($CO_2$-eq.) multiplied by the global warming potential (GWP). Source of $CO_2$ in the cultivation of rice farming is incomplete combustion of fossil fuels used by agricultural machinery. Most of the $CH_4$ emitted during rice cultivation and major factor of $CH_4$ emission is flooded paddy field in anaerobic condition. Most of the $N_2O$ emitted from rice cultivation process and major sources of $N_2O$ emission is application of fertilizer such as compound fertilizer, urea, orgainc fertilizer, etc. As a result of sensitivity analysis due to the variation in energy consumption, diesel had the highest sensitivity among the energies inputs. If diesel consumption is reduced by 10%, it could be estimated that $CO_2$ potential reduction is about 2.5%. When application rate of compound fertilizer reduces by 10%, the potential reduction is calculated to be approximately 1% for $CO_2$ and approximately 1.8% for $N_2O$. When drainage duration is decreased until 10 days, methane emissions is reduced by approximately 4.5%. That is to say drainage days, tillage, and reducing diesel consumption were the main sources having the largest effect of GHG reduction due to changing amount of inputs. Accordingly, proposed methods to decrease GHG emissions were no-tillage, midsummer drainage, etc.

It is known that he pollutant emitted from the combustion process of marine fuel oil causes air pollution and harmful effects to the human body. Accordingly, IMO regulates pollutants emitted from ships. However, the regulation of Particulate Matter (PM) is still in the process of debate, so preemptive action is needed. Fundamental research on PM is essential. In this study, the Dimensionless Light Extinction Constant ($K_e$) of fuel oil used in marine diesel engines was measured and analyzed to construct the basic data of the PM generated from marine-based fuel oil. The fuel oil used in the land diesel engine was measured in the same way for character comparison. Both fuel oils differ in sulfur content and density. The $K_e$ was measured via the optical method using a 633 nm laser and was determined by using the volume fraction of PM collected by the gravimetric filter method. The $K_e$ of the PM discharged from marine fuel oil is 8.28, and the land fuel oil is 8.44. The $K_e$ of two fuel oils was similar within the measurement uncertainty range. However, it was found by comparison with the value obtained by the Rayleigh-Limit solution that the light scattering portion could be large. Also, it was found that light extinction characteristics could be different due to the relationship between light transmittance and collected mass.
Purpose: By measuring and evaluating the risk of biodiesel through non-volatile residue (NVR) and flash point and explosion limit measurement at a specific temperature according to ASTM test standards, the risk of chemical fire causative substances is identified and a universal evaluation method By derivation and securing the risk-related data of the material, it can be used for the identification and analysis of the cause of the fire, and it can be applied to the risk assessment of other chemical substances Method: In order to measure the risk of biodiesel, it was measured using the non-volatile residue(NVR) measurement method, which measures how much flammable liquid is generated at a specific temperature. Heating was tested by applying KS M 5000: 2009 Test Method 4111. In addition, the flash point was measured using the method specified in ASTM E659-782005, and the energy supply method was measured using the constant temperature method. In addition, the explosion limit measurement was conducted in accordance with ASTM E 681-04 「Standard test method for concentration limits of flammability of chemicals(Vapors and gases)」 test standard. Result: As a result of checking the amount of combustible liquid by the non-volatile residue (NVR)measurement method, the non-volatile residue(NVR) of general diesel when left at 105±2℃ for 3 hours was about 30% (70% of volatile matter) and about 4% of biodiesel. In addition, similar results were obtained for the non-volatile residue(NVR)heating temperature of 150±2℃, 3 hours and 200±2℃ for 1 hour, and white smoke was generated at 200℃ or higher. In addition, similar values were obtained as a result of experimentally checking the explosion (combustion) limits of general diesel, general diesel containing 20% biodiesel, and 100% biodiesel. Therefore, it was confirmed that the flammability risk did not significantly affect the explosion risk. Conclusion: The results of this study suggested the risk judgment criteria for mixtures through experimental research on flammable mixtures for the purpose of securing the effectiveness, reliability, and reproducibility of the details of the criteria for determining dangerous substances in the existing Dangerous Materials Safety Management Act. It will be possible to provide reference data for the judgment criteria for flammable liquids that are regulated in the field. In addition, if the know-how for each test method is accumulated through this study, it is expected that it will be used as basic data in the research on risk assessment of dangerous substances and as a basis for research on the determination of dangerous substances.

In this study, to investigate the effect of spray behavior characteristics, we induce the mixing ratio of emulsified fuel using impinging spray. We formulate the emulsified fuel by mixing diesel and hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$). We set the temperature of the heating plate to $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$, and set the injection pressures to 400, 600, 800, and 1000bar. The surfactants for the emulsified fuel mixture, which were mixed span80 and tween80 was mixed as 9:1, were fixed to 3% of the total volume of the emulsified fuel. We set the mixing ratio of $H_2O_2$ in the emulsified fuel as emulsified fuel(EF)0, EF2, EF12, and EF22. Further, we visualize the evaporation impinging spray using the Schlieren method. Based on the results of this study, we found that a higher temperature and injection pressure of the heating plate impingement led to the active diffusion of the fuel vapor, which promoted emulsified fuel evaporation. When the emulsified fuel is utilized in an actual engine, because of the temperature-drop effect of the combustion chamber, which is due to the evaporation of $H_2O_2$ in fuel and faster mixture formation is expected to decrease the engine emissions.

To explore the sources of carbonaceous material in the airborne particulate matter (PM), comprehensive PM sampling was performed (3 to 14 January 2010) at a traffic hot spot site (HS), Farm Gate, Dhaka using several samplers: AirMetrics MiniVol (for $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$) and MOUDI (for size fractionated submicron PM). Long-term PM data (April 2000 to March 2006 and April 2000 to March 2010 in two size fractions ($PM_{2.2}$ and $PM_{2.2-10}$) obtained from two air quality-monitoring stations, one at Farm Gate (HS) and another at a semi-residential (SR) area (Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka Campus, (AECD)), respectively were also analyzed. The long-term PM trend shows that fine particulate matter concentrations have decreased over time as a result of government policy interventions even with increasing vehicles on the road. The ratio of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ showed that the average $PM_{2.5}$ mass was about 78% of the $PM_{10}$ mass. It was also found that about 63% of $PM_{2.5}$ mass is $PM_1$. The total contribution of BC to $PM_{2.5}$ is about 16% and showed a decreasing trend over the years. It was observed that $PM_1$ fractions contained the major amount of carbonaceous materials, which mainly originated from high temperature combustion process in the $PM_{2.5}$. From the IMPROVE TOR protocol carbon fraction analysis, it was observed that emissions from gasoline vehicles contributed to $PM_1$ given the high abundance of EC1 and OC2 and the contribution of diesel to $PM_1$ is minimal as indicated by the low abundance of OC1 and EC2. Source apportionment results also show that vehicular exhaust is the largest contributors to PM in Dhaka. There is also transported $PM_{2.2}$from regional sources. With the increasing economic activities and recent GDP growth, the number of vehicles and brick kilns has significantly increased in and around Dhaka. Further action will be required to further reduce PM-related air pollution in Dhaka.
