  • In this paper we present the effects that valve train design parameters and operating conditions have on the valve rotation properties of a diesel engine. Rotation of intake and exhaust valves are very closely related to the long term durability of diesel engines. of the valves do not rotate even at a rated engine speed, it causes the uneven wear of the valve seat and valve head contact area, which eventually shortens the engine life. Because the rated speed of a diesel engine is relatively lower than that of a gasoline engine, the operating condition of a diesel engine produces tough environment for valve rotation. Therefore, the valve rotation is an important problem which should be solved in the early stage of engine development. In this study, we developed a new technique to measure the valve rotation and shaking motion simultaneously using three proximity sensors. Valve train rotating properties of a diesel engine were measured under various engine operating conditions.

  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been developed to optimize engine out emission, especially particulate matter (PM). One of the main important factors for developing the DPF is estimation of soot mass being accumulated inside the DPF. Evaluation of pressure drop over the DPF is a simple way to estimate the accumulated soot mass but its accuracy is known to be limited to certain vehicle operating conditions. The method to compensate drawback is adoption of integrating time history of the engine out PM and burning soot. Present study demonstrates current status of the soot estimation methods including the results from the engine test benches and vehicles.

  • The total control system of main engine and transmission will be designed specially for use in drive systems in rail vehicles. The domestic diesel train was controlled by the relay control circuit. But the exportation to Europe and the Middle East was controlled by total control system. When the driver operates the train, the operating signals are sent to Voith Controller. The VTIC controls the main engine and transmission. The system communicates with TMS, and the data are displayed by TMS when the function switch at the display unit is operated. The this driving control system which is applied to reduce the maintenace load and cost at Turkey diesel multiple unit train is proposed.

  • To maintain the specific volumetric efficiency of a heavy-duty diesel engine, an understanding of the behavior of each part of the valve train system is very important. The stiffness of the valve train system has a strong influence on the behavior of the valve train than valve clearance, heatresistance, or the durability of parts. In this study, a geometrical cam design profile using a finite element model of the valve train system is suggested. The results of the valve behavior according to the change in stiffness is analyzed for further tuning of the valve train system.

  • Recently it is a tendency that Diesel rolling stock is committing in the commuter's train route of the suburb for solving commuting traffic congestion. It has advantage which expense of diesel rolling stock is relatively cheaper than electric rail car or high-speed train. In addition, it can be using the exist route without large-scale facility investment. Because of this advantage, the demand of diesel rolling stock occupy regular portion from overseas railway car market. GM/RT 2100 specifies the loads vehicle bodies shall be capable of withstanding, identifies how material data shall be used and presents the principles to be used for design verification by analysis. Therefore, in order to fulfill the structural requirements, Rotem Company has carried out Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to verify whether the carbody structure has enough strength to withstand the loads specified by GM/RT 2100. This research contains the results obtained by the analysis. The analysis was carried out using I-DEAS 12 NX Series

  • Diesel locomotive engine is the main source of train noise in these days but hard to reduce the level by barrier for it emitted from high location. For the passing high level noise properties of diesel locomotive engine, there are needs of changing the environmental railway limit to maximum level from equivalent. In this study we investigate the noise characteristics of the diesel electric locomotive according to the change of notch. From the result we found out the frequency of engine cycle noise and the shape of noise spectrum.

  • A Vigilance control is a device fitted in the driving cab of a railway train to ensure that the driver is alert on the job. A simple vigilance control requires that the driver press a button at intervals not less than a certain amount and not more than another amount of time. If the driver fails to operate the vigilance control within those limits, a hooter sounds, and should the driver still doesn't operate the vigilance control then the brakes are applied. If the driver falls asleep or takes ill, then clearly such a vigilance control will sooner or later apply the brakes. The this vigilance control system which is applied to reduce the drive load at Syria diesel multiple unit train is proposed.

  • Rail transport has been considered an environmental-friendly transport mode compared with other transport modes such as ship, truck, and aircraft. However, air pollutions emitted by diesel locomotives have emerged as social issues. In addition, the railway industry may not be able to avoid a duty of alleviating greenhouse gases emission owing to the Korean government policies for green growth which is an economic paradigm that simultaneously pursues growth and environmental improvement. Moreover, rising oil prices has burdened a train operating company. The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology of determining an economical speed of diesel freight locomotive from the viewpoint of the train operating company. In the methodology, we first define an operational cost function based on various cost factors and then suggest formula to calculate an economical speed of diesel freight locomotive. To estimate the influence of cost factors such as diesel price, carbon taxes, and time costs on the speed of diesel freight locomotive, sensitivity analysis was conducted.

  • This paper reviews the main drivers forcing change and progress in powertrains for passenger cars in the coming years. The environmental drivers of omissions and CO2 will force better technical performance, but customer demand for increased choice will force change in the basic engine design and provide opportunities for alternate configurations of powertrain. Gasoline engines will embody refinements of valve train actuations as well as developments in combustion, especially direct injection and possibly a lean booated form of direct injection. Nevertheless, the conventional, port injected engine will continue to be the dominant engine for some years to come. The high speed direct injection diesel will very soon supplant its indirect injection predecessor completely. It will take an increasing share of the total powertrain market as improved specific power and refinement make it even more attractive to the customer. Car manufacturers will provide diesel models to satisfy this customer demand as well as using the efficiency of the diesel to enable them to meet their fleet CO2 commitments. Both gasoline and diesel engines will see an increasing degree of electrification and partial hybridisation as efficient flywheel mounted electrical devices become available.
