  • Mulberry dwarf, paulownia witches' broom, jujube witches' broom, and sumach witches' broom are known to be associated with mycoplamalike organisms(MLO) in Korea. Simple microscopic detection of MLO infection in these plants was attempted. Periwinkle plant was also tested. Application of $0.2\%\;and\;0.4\%$ solution of Dienes' stain gave diagnoatic value for MLO-induced diseases of periwinkle and mulberry. Among the various plant parts examined, young herbaceous stem just below the apical part gave the best result. Density of staining reaction was proportional to disease severity. Longitudial sections were superior to transverse sections in confirming MLO infection by staining. Light source without blue filter was useful for increasing the color contrast between sieve tube and xylem vessel and for eliminating misinterpretation. Paulownia, jujube, and sumach samples gave no clear difference in staining reaction between healthy and diseased sections even when various modifications of Dienes' staining procedure were tried.

  • This article tried to review the meaning and implication of six stages theory of learning mathematics suggested by Zoltan Dienes in "Building up Mathematics" in 1971. It was not much concretely known to Korean mathematics education society. In particular, there is no mathematical example which could cover all the stages to know what the theory tells. So this article focused on the example which Dienes developed for learning integers in 2000 to dig the theory. As a result, some critical aspects and problems of six stages theory were found. And finally educational implication was described.

  • An efficient synthetic method of Z-selective 3-ethoxycarbonyl-2-halo-1,3-dienes and 3-vinyl-2-halo-1,3-dienes was developed from the reaction of allenols having ethoxycarbonyl and vinyl group with indium trihalides at room temperature in $CH_2Cl_2$.

  • The bleaching effect of chlorophyll a by two lipoxygenase isoenzymes (LOX-1, LOX-2) isolated from potato tuber(variety DEinma ) was studied. In the presence of LOX-1 or LOX0-2 with linoleic acid chlorophyll a bleaching occurred during two isoenzymes-mediated oxidation of linoleic acid. Chlorophyll a bleaching porceeded with decreasing in the formation of conjugated dienes form linoleic acidyb LOX-1 and LOX-2 . In the presence of chlorophyll a, LOX-2 showed a markable decrease inproduction of conjugated dienes from linoleic acid and a higher chlorophyll a bleaching activity. compared with LOX-1. These results suggest chlorophyll-bleaching reaction required intermediates formed during the peroxidation of linoleic acid by lipoxygenase isoenzymes, thus preventing formation of conjugated dienes.

  • The intramolecular formal iron-catalyzed [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of acetylenic dienes to produce bicyclic products has been investigated. These reactions proceeded, competing via intramolecular carbocyclization and bimolecular cycloaddition. However, the iron-catalyzed bicyclic carbocyclization of 4,4-dimethyl-3-(tert-butyldimethylsiloxy)-1-phenyl-6,8-decadien-1-yne(11) yielded exclusively bicyclic diene product(yield 78.1%). From this result, we found that the substrate containing a dimethyl substitutent at the 4,4-position helped to promote the intramolecular reaction, which is stable to the iron catalyzed conditions.

  • Thermal cycloaddition of t-butyl trimethylsilyl thioketone (1) with 2-substituted dienes such as isoprene and 2-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene occurred smoothly at 80${\circ}C$ to afford regioiomeric mixtures of cycloadducts. On the other hand, similar treatment of 1 with 1-substituted dienes such as trans-1,3-pentadiene, 1-methoxy-and 1-acetoxy-1,3-butadiene and Danishefsky's diene afforded a single regioisomeric adduct, respectively. Protodesilylation of the silylated adducts 8 and 11 could also be performed with ease.

  • It has been found that $Rh(ClO_4)(CO)(P(C_6H_5)_3)_2$ catalyzes the hydrogenation and isomerization of soybean oil at room temperature under the atmospheric pressure of hydrogen. The hydrogenation occurs at the olefinic groups to produce saturated groups leaving the ester groups intact, and the isomerization converts $-CH = CH- CH_2-CH = CH-$ units to conjugated dienes and the dienes separated by more than two $-CH_2-$ groups. The rate of the hydrogenation is faster than that of the isomerization.

  • The area of a trapezoid is an important concept to develop mathematical thinking and competency, but many students tend to understand the formula for the area of a trapezoid instrumentally. A clue to solving these problems could be found in Dienes' theory of learning mathematics and Watson and Mason' concept of example spaces. The purpose of this study is to obtain implications for the teaching and learning of the area of the trapezoid. This study analyzed the example spaces constructed by students in learning the area of a trapezoid based on Dienes' theory of learning mathematics. As a result of the analysis, the example spaces for each stage of math learning constructed by the students were a trapezoidal variation example spaces in the play stage, a common representation example spaces in the comparison-representation stage, and a trapezoidal area formula example spaces in the symbolization-formalization stage. The type, generation, extent, and relevance of examples constituting example spaces were analyzed, and the structure of the example spaces was presented as a map. This study also analyzed general examples, special examples, conventional examples of example spaces, and discussed how to utilize examples and example spaces in teaching and learning the area of a trapezoid. Through this study, it was found that it is appropriate to apply Dienes' theory of learning mathematics to learning the are of a trapezoid, and this study can be a model for learning the area of the trapezoid.
