  • In this paper, we present an optimal shape design method for a dielectric microlens which is used to focus an incoming infrared plane wave in wideband, by exploiting the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique and the topology optimization technique. Topology optimization is a scheme to search an optimal shape by adjusting the material properties, which are design variables, within the design space. And by introducing the adjoint variable method, we can effectively calculate a derivative of the objective function with respect to the design variable. To verify the proposed method, a shape design problem of a dielectric microlens is tested when illuminated by a transverse electric (TE)-polarized infrared plane wave. In this problem, the design variable is the dielectric constant within the design space of a dielectric microlens. The design objective is to maximally focus the incoming magnetic field at a specific point in wideband.

  • We have proposed an optical thin film and micro lens to improve the luminance of organic light emitting device. The first method, optical thin film was calculated refractive index of dielectric layer material that was modulated refractive index of organic material, ITO (indium tin oxide)and glass. The second method, microlens was applied with lenses on the organic device. Optical thin films were designed with Macleod Simulator and Micro Lenses were calculated by FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) solution. The structure of thin film was designed in organic material/ITO/dielectric layer/glass. The lenses size, height and distance were 5 ${\mu}m$, 1 ${\mu}m$, 1 ${\mu}m$, respectively. The material of micro lenses used silicon dioxide. Result, The highest luminance of OLED which applied with microlens was 11,185 $cd/m^2$, when approval voltage was 14.5 V, applied thin film was 5,857 $cd/m^2$. The device efficiency applying microlens increased 3 times than the device which does not apply microlens.

  • We studied the dielectric layer effect on the electro-optical (EO) properties of liquid crystal (LC) devices together with numerical simulations. Recently, it has been reported that the surface dielectric layer affects significantly the EO performances of LC microlens arrays and wide-viewing LC displays. it is found that the operation voltage of the LC device decreases with increasing the dielectric constant or with decreasing the thickness of the dielectric polymer layer. The experimental data agree well with theoretical results predicted in a simple dielectric model within the continuum formalism.
