Diel change in urea decomposition activity of epiphytic algae on Phragmites stems and phytoplankton in a shallow littoral reed zone in the south basin of Lake Biwa was investigated with an in situ technique using $^{14}C$-labelled urea. The daily rates of urea decomposition (sum of urea carbon incorporation rate and $CO_2$ liberation rate) by epiphytic and planktonic algae were calculated as 180 ${\mu}$ mole urea surface shoot area $m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ and 210 ${\mu}$ mole urea $m^{-3}\;day^{-1}$. The chlorophyll a specific urea decomposition rates of epiphytic and planktonic algae were 4.7 to 6.4 and 4.4 to 6.2 ${\mu}$ mole urea mg chl. $a^{-1}$ incubation $time^{-1}$ in daytime and 4.2 to 5.7 and 2.4 to 3.5 ${\mu}$ mole urea mg chl. $a^{-1}\;time^{-1}$ in nighttime, respectively. High values were obtained during 12:00 ${\sim}$ 18:00 and low values during 00:00 ${\sim}$ 06:00 for both epiphytic and planktonic algal communities. A clear diel periodicity in the urea decomposing activity of the planktonic algae was observed. The activity of the epiphytic algae, on the other hand, showed no destinctive variation during a day. The present results indicate that epiphytic algae are one of the significant urea decomposers in a reed zone, and that the diel patterns are quite difference between both algal communities.
Diel changes in the feeding habits of Rudarius ercodes were investigated in an eelgrass bed of Jindong Bay, Korea. The main food components for R. ercodes (1.6~ 4.3 cm SL) were gammarid amphipods, eelgrass, polychaetes and urochordates. Most dietary items were inhabitants of an eelgrass bed. Diel variations in diet and feeding activity occurred. The diet of R. ercodes underwent changes from eelgrass and gammarid amphipods (omnivore) at day to mainly gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, and urochordates (carnivore) at night. Rudarius ercodes probably took detached eelgrass leaves and grazed live eelgrass during day, whereas feeding on gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, urochordates, and bivalves were facilitated by nocturnal movement and activity of these prey during night. The feeding activity of R. ercodes was also correlated with periods of high tides.
A study on the diel activities and feeding habits of Pseudobagrus brevicorpus living in the Daegacheon Stream of Nakdonggang River was conducted in September 2017. Diel activity took place during the night, just after sunset and just before sunrise. Pseudobagrus brevicorpus swam in the middle depths, and when they found prey organisms, approached and consumed them immediately. Fish were divided by age into three groups. Prey organisms whose index of relative importance in the stomach contents exceeded 1% belonged to the orders Ephemeroptera (80.8%), Diptera (8.6%), and Trichoptera (8.5%). An index of relative importance by age showed that the Ephemeroptera are very important prey organisms, and the sizes of prey organisms increase with fish growth.
Background: Sika deer, Cervus nippon, were originally introduced to South Korea from Japan and Taiwan for commercial farming purposes. Unfortunately, they were released into the wild during religious events and have since begun to impact the native ecosystem and species endemic to South Korea. The study of activity patterns can improve our understanding of the environmental impact of non-native species and their association with sympatric species. Using camera traps, we studied the diel and seasonal activity patterns of non-native sika deer and quantified the temporal overlap with sympatric mammalian species in the Muljangori-oreum wetlands of Hallasan National Park, South Korea. Results: A total of 970 trap events were recorded for five mammalian species from nine locations during the camera-trap survey. Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus) had the highest number of recorded events (72.0%), followed by sika deer (Cervus nippon) (16.2%), wild boar (Sus scrofa) (5.0%), Asian badger (Meles leucurus) (4.5%), and the Jeju weasel (Mustela sibirica quelpartis) (2.0%). Sika deer had bimodal activity patterns throughout the year, with peaks throughout the spring-autumn twilight, and day and night time throughout the winter. Relating the daily activity of sika deer with other mammalian species, roe deer expressed the highest degree of overlap (Δ4 = 0.80) while the Asian badger demonstrated the lowest overlap (Δ4 = 0.37). Conclusions: Our data show that sika deer are a crepuscular species with seasonal variations in daily activity patterns. Additionally, we identified the temporal differences in activity peaks between different mammals in the Muljangori-oreum wetlands and found higher degree of overlap between sika deer and roe deer during twilight hours.
Spatial activities of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were investigated weekly using yellow sticky trap which were placed at three different height and monitored during four time periods. Yellow sticky trap placed at plant height caught significantly more L. trifolii (Burgess) than did traps placed at 30 and 60cm above plant height. Diel activities of L. trifolii (Burgess) were monitored with yellow sticky traps at 1- and 2-h intervals during three time periods. Leafminer flight activity in May, July and October peaked from 1400 to 1800 hours, 0800 hours and from 1200 to 1400 hours, respectively. 2nd peak of flight activity only occurred in May. Attraction of L. trifolii (Burgess) for yellow sticky traps was affected by temperature as well as solar intensity. Male of L. trifolii (Burgess) appeared more responsive to yellow sticky traps than female regardless of trap height or time of day.
Diel changes in feeding activity of juvenile Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii were investigated throughout the analysis of stomach contents of 301 fishes collected from the southeastern coast of Korea. Fish samples were collected every 3 hour over a 24 h period in summer using small bottom trawl. The ratio of empty stomach, stomach fullness, stomach contents index (SCI) and stomach fullness index (IF) of juvenile C. pallasii were varied markedly with day/night changes. The ratio of empty stomach tended be higher during nighttime, while the other values were higher at daytime, with showing peak before sunset. During daytime, the stomach contents mainly were made up of copepods and euphausiids, while the diets at midnight were composed of nearly digested and unidentifiable items.

The vertical distribution and activity patterns of fishes during the evening and morning transitions between day and night were studied acoustically and by bottom trawling in November 1990-1992 in thermally stratified waters of the East China Sea. The acoustic data were collected from six stations with a scientific echo-sounder operating at two frequencies of 25 and 100kHz, and the echograms were used to determine the vertical distributions of fish. Biological sampling was accomplished by bottom trawling to identify fish species recorded on the echograms, and the species and length compositions were determined. At each station, vertical profiles of water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were taken with a CTD system and were related to the diel movements and the depth distributions of fish. During the day most fish were within several meters above bottom, but began to migrate upwards just before sunset, and during the night they were dispersed in midwater. Prior to sunrise with a thermocline present, one group of the fish aggregation occurred in dense schools slightly above the thermocline, while the other group occurred with the numerous single fish-traces bellow it. These groups of aggregations rapidly began to migrate toward the bottom across the thermocline from about 40 min before sunrise. Trawl hauls in the bottom strata below the thermocline with the characteristic single fish traces yieled invariably catches dominated by snailfish and fishing frog with minor quantities of other species in all stations. Hence, the results indicate that snailfish and fishing frog were the dominated scatterers in the depth strata below the thermocline, and the single-fish recordings were mainly snailfish. The fish species such as anchovy and juvenile mackerel in bottom trawl catches is poorly represented in relation to the mesh selectivity of the trawl net, but their occurrence suggest that the fish-school recording above the thermocline were due to these species which migrated vertically across the thermocline, with a temperature gradient of about 8$^{\circ}C$, from the water layers near the bottom at night. Accordingly, we conclude that the vertical distribution and activity patterns of snailfish were strongly temperature dependent and in the termally stratified waters, the upper limit to diel activity was closely linked to the position of the thermocline.
The citrus leafminer (CLM), Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, is an oligophagous pest of Rutaceae family, especially Citrus spp. occurring in most worldwide citrus-growing areas. This study was conducted to evaluate a sex pheromone chemical of CLM, (Z,Z)-7,11-hexadecadienal (7Z,11Z-16:Al) in monitoring CLM by trap types, the diel activity and the influence of some weather factors on trap catch. CLM was well attracted on a trap baited 7Z,11Z-16:Al 1mg. Sticky wing trap was more effective than bucket trap. Most caught CLM were attracted at 2$\sim$6 a.m. regardless of season, and activity time of CLM was affected by sunrise time as well as sunset time. The trap catch of CLM was more influenced by wind velocity than temperature for activity time of CLM. The number of caught CLM was fallen at below 13$^{\circ}C$, but there was little effect for trap catch at over that temperature. The average wind velocity at over 2.0 m/sec made the number of caught CLM drop down. The precipitation did not affect the number of caught CLM when the average wind velocity was lower than at 2.0 m/sec.

The vertical distribution and activity patterns of fishes during the evening and morning transitions were investigated acoustically and by pelagic trawling on October 2-10, 1997 in the Korean Eastern Sea. The acoustic data were collected from four stations with a scientific echo sounder operating at a frequency of 38 kHz, and the echogram was used to analyze the diel vertical migration of fish. Biological sampling was accomplished by pelagic trawling to identify fish species recorded on the echograms, and the species and length compositions were investigated. Vertical profiles of water temperature, salinity at the trawl station were taken with a CTD system and were related to the diel movement and the depth distribution of fish. During the day, one group of fish mainly distributed above the depth layer of 50 m, the other group was at deeper water, approximately 250 m, but began to migrate toward the surface before sunset with a time difference. During the night, they were dispersed between the surface and the depth of 125 m. Just prior to sunrise, the scattering layer was divided with 2 groups and began to migrate downwards, respectively. Several trials of pelagic trawling for scattering layers suggest that the most dominant scatterer in the survey area of this study was Japanese flying squid, Todarodes pacificus..
Calling behavior is often used to infer breeding patterns in anurans. We studied the seasonal and diel calling activities of anuran species in a wetland in central Korea to determine the calling season and to evaluate the effects of abiotic factors on male calling. Acoustic monitoring was used in which frog calls were recorded for a full day, once a week, throughout an entire year. Using acoustic monitoring, we identified three frog species in the study site. Males of Rana dybowskii called in late winter and early spring; we thus classified this species as a winter/spring caller. The results of binary logistic regression showed that temperature, relative humidity, and 1-day lag rainfall were significant factors for male calling in R. dybowskii. Temperature and relative humidity were important factors for the calling activity of R. nigromaculata, whereas 24-h rainfall and 1-day lag rainfall were not significant. Thus, we determined R. nigromaculata to be a summer caller independent of weather. In Hyla japonica, relative humidity, 24-h rainfall, and 1- day lag rainfall were significant for male calling, suggesting that this species is a summer caller dependent on local rain.
