Rubber compounds have high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate. In this study, die swell of rubber compounds at the capillary die have been investigated through an experiment and computer simulation. They have been performed using fluidity tester in experiment and commercial CFD code, Polyflow in computer simulation. Die swell of rubber compounds for relaxation time at several modes under same conditions with the experiment were predicted using non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) model. The simulation was analyzed compared with the experiment. Viscoelastic behaviors for pressure, velocity and shear rate distribution were analyzed at the capillary die. It is concluded that the PTT model successfully represented the amount of the optimal die swell of rubber compounds for relaxation time at different modes.
Surface defects in injection molded parts are due to the unsteady flow of polymer melt which are related to the geometries of cavity and gate, the operational conditions of injection and the rheological properties of polymer. In this study we have examined jetting phenomena in injection molding process for three kinds of PCs which have different molecular weight and structure, PBT and PC/ABS alloy with several injection speeds. We have used various cavity shapes that are tensile, flexural and impact test specimens with various gate and cavity thicknesses. Through this study we have observed that the formation of surface defect associated with jetting during filling stage in injection molding is strongly related to die swell. This means that the jetting is strongly affected by the elastic property rather than the viscous property in viscoelastic characteristics of molten polymer. Large die swell would eliminate jetting however, the retardation of die swell would stimulate jetting. In the point of mold design, reducing the thickness ratio of cavity to gate can reduce or eliminate jetting and associated surface defects regardless of magnitude of elastic property. It also enlarges process window that can produce steady flow of polymer melt in injection molding.

Different resins have different elastic properties, and elastic flow behavior depends on the shear rate of flow, i.e. injection speed. This paper presents a rigid-plastic finite element method to handle the frictional contact problem between two deformable bodies experiencing large deformation. The variational formulation combined with incremental quasi-static model is employed for treating the contact boundary condition. The frictional behavior of the model obeys Coulomb's law of friction. The proposed contact algorithms are classified into two categories, one for searching contacting nodes and the other for calculating contact forces at the contact surface. A slave node and master contact segment are defined using the geometric condition of finite elements on the contact interface. The penalty parameter is used to limit the penetration between contacting bodies, and the finite elements are coupled with contact boundary elements.us gates and cavity thicknesses. Through this study we have observed that the jetting is related to the die swell of material. This study presents 1-dimensional simple model for sheet casting or rectangular fiber spinning process. In order to achieve this goal, we introduce the concept of force flux balance at the die exit, which assigns for the extensional flow outside the die the initial condition containing the information of shear flow history inside the die. With the Leonov constitutive equation that predicts non-vanishing second normal stress difference in shear flow, we are able to describe the anisotropic swelling behavior of the extrudate at least qualitatively. In other words, the negative value of the second normal stress difference causes thickness swelling much higher than width of extrudate. This result implies the importance of choosing the rheological model in the analysis of polymer processing operations, since the constitutive equation with the vanishing second normal stress difference is shown to exhibit the characteristic of isotropic swelling, that is, the thickness swell ratio always equal to the ratio in width direction.
