  • Dibenzo-18-crown-6, dibenzo-21-crown-7 and dihydroxy dibenzo-18-crown-6 were synthesized by Bayer-Villiger oxidation strategy. Dibenzo-18-crown-6 and dibenzo-21-crown-7 could be synthesized through a three-step protocol starting from salicylaldehyde. Salicylaldehyde was reacted with bis-(2-chloroethyl)ether using $K_2CO_3$ in acetonitrile to link the two phenolic groups with the oxyethylene bridge followed by conversion of the formyl group to the hydroxy group via a Baeyer-Villiger reaction and finally linking the two phenolic group with appropriate oxyethylene bridge. The two target crown ethers were obtained in overall yield, 24% and 30%, respectively. This method has a great potential for synthesis of symmetrical as well as unsymmetrical dibenzo crowns with varying oxyethylene bridges. Baeyer-Villiger oxidation could be used to prepare dihydroxy derivative of dibenzo-18-crown-6 through acetylation of dibenzo-18-crown-6 followed by Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation could be substantially accelerated using trifluoroacetic acid.

  • To determine the influence of the cationization agent on the collision activated dissociation (CAD) fragmentation behavior of oligosaccharides, the CAD spectra of the singly protonated, sodiated oligosaccharides and singly sodiated and dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether conjugated oligosaccharides were carefully compared. Each of these three different species showed quite different fragmentation spectra. The comparison of singly protonated and sodiated oligosaccharide CAD spectra revealed that different cationization agents affected the cationization agent adduction sites as well as the fragmentation sites within the oligosaccharides. When the mobility of $Na^+$ was limited by the dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether encapsulation agent, the examined linear oligosaccharides showed fragmentation patterns quite different from the unmodified ones. For the dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether conjugated oligosaccharides, the charge-remote fragmentation pathways were more likely to be activated than the chargedirected pathways. This work demonstrates that dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether conjugation can potentially provide a route to selectively activate the charge-remote fragmentation pathways, albeit to a limited extent, in tandem mass spectrometry studies.

  • In transportation the amount of metal ion by crown ethers, dibenzo-18-crown-6 were investigated using ultraviolet spectrometer. Transported the amount of one valence metal ion as $K^+ and Li^+}$ was not so much. On the other hand, two valence metal ion increased by dibenzo-18-crown-6, which means that the ionic charge and hydration of two valence metal ion affected the carrying ability of crown ethers. The carrying ability of dibenzo-18-crown-6 was, therefore, adequate for two valence metal ion as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Ba^{2+}$. It was also suggested that transport metal ion by crown ethers, which is related rather the catching ability than the selectivity of metalion.

  • The crown ether ring of 20, 21, 24, 25-tetranitrodibenzo-18-crown-6(TNDB-18-C-6) was cleaved by various alcoholic bases to give 2,4,5-trialkoxynitrobenzene derivatives and 4,5-dialkoxy-1,2-dinitrobenzene derivatives as the major products, and bis[(alkoxynitrophenoxy)ethyl]ether derivatives from partially cleaved crown ether ring as the minor products. The ring cleavage reaction of TNDB-18-C-6 with ethylene glycolic base resulted ring contraction through intramolecular nucleophilic cyclization of the initially formed ring cleavage product to give nitro derivatives of DB-14-C-4.

  • PVC membrane electrodes based on the lipophilic neutral carrier, dibenzo-18-crown-6, cyclic oligomers of teit-butylphenol-formaidehyde condensates, calix[4]arenes as the active sensors for verapamil have been prepared and tested in a variety of plasticizers. At pH 5.0, the electrode exhibits a Nernstian response in the range of 10$^{-2}$~5$\times$10$^{-5}$ M verapamil with a slope of 49.1$\pm$0.5mV per concentration decade. The electrode constructed in this work can be used continuously for at least 1 month before any damage to the membrane occurs. And the analyses of the local anesthetic amine, which are good to select a specific compound in a mixed solution, were also accomplished by using of another neutral carrier, a DB18C6, for comparing with calix[4]arene.

  • Crown ether is one of well-known host molecules and able to selectively sequester metal cation. We employed M06-2X density functional theory with IEFPCM and SMD continuum solvation models to study selectivity of dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether (DB18C6) for alkaline earth dications, $Ba^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. $Mg^{2+}$ showed predominantly strong binding affinity in the gas phase because of strong polarization of CO bonds by cation. In aqueous solution, binding free energy differences became smaller among these dications. However, $Mg^{2+}$ had the best binding, being incompatible with experimental observations in aqueous solution. The enthalpies of the dication exchange reaction between DB18C6 and water cluster molecules were computed as another estimation of selectivity in aqueous solution. These results also demonstrated that $Mg^{2+}$ bound to DB18C6 better than $Ba^{2+}$. We speculated that the species determining selectivity in water could be 2:1 complexes of two DB18C6s and one dication.

  • Novel fluoroionophore of dibenzothiazolyl-dibenzo-crown ethers were synthesized from diformal-dibenzo 18-crown-6 (24-crown-8) with 2-aminothiophenol, and they were characterizated by $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR, IR spectrum, Mass spectrum, elemental analyses, respectively. The fluorescent properties of the newly synthesized crown ether were examined with $Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Rb^+$, $Cs^+$, $NH_4^+$ and $CF_3COOH$, respectively. With protonation using $CF_3COOH$, the absorption bands of the new crown ethers are further blue shifted, the maximum emission wavelengths further red shifted.

  • Composite systems of $Eu(phen)_2Cl_3{(H_2O)}_2$, Eu(DN-bpy)$(phen)Cl_3{(H_2O)}_2$ and Eu(DB-bpy)$(phen)Cl_3{(H_2O)}_2$ (DNbpy: $4,4^\prime$-Dinonyl-$2,2^\prime$-dipyridyl; DB-bpy: $4,4^\prime$-Di-tert-butyl-$2,2^\prime$-dipyridyl) with crown ethers of Benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5), Benzo-18-crown-6 (B18C6), 18-crown-6 (18C6), Dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) and Dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) were fabricated successfully and characterized by using photoluminescent spectroscopy and luminescent lifetime measurements. All composites formed show high luminescence mainly in red region. It was found that the heterocyclic ligands such as phen, DN-bpy and DB-bpy as well as the crown ethers have great influences on the photoluminescent properties of $Eu^{3+}$ ion. The environment around $Eu^{3+}$ ion in the composite systems changes greatly, presumably the variation of the first coordination sphere. The $Eu^{3+}$ ion occupies higher symmetrical environment and in more than one kind of symmetrical site in the composite systems studied in this work.

  • New crown ether dye-Ⅰ and dye-Ⅱ having an azo group(-N=N-) were synthesized from monobenzo-15-crown-5 and dibenzo-18-crown-6. These dyes showed ${\lambda}_{max}$ of 377 and 383nm respectively. The complexes of alkali metal ions ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Cs^+$) with dye ligands showed band shift (390~400nm) and intensity increased. For a given anion, the extraction constants are in the order of $K^+$ < $Cs^+$ < $Na^+$ for dye-Ⅰ and $Cs^+$ < $Na^+$ < $K^+$ for dye-Ⅱ. These results show that the selectivity of crown ethers toward the alkali metal ions is dependant on the charge density of cation and the size of crown ether cavity. For a given cation, the order of the extraction constant is $Cl^-$ < $Br^-$ < $I^-$ < picrate. This order coincides with the degree of anion solvation effect.

  • The ion-selective membrane fabricated with 33 wt% PVC, 66 wt% o-NPOE and 1 wt% 4'-benzothiazolylbenzo-15-crown-5 (TB15C5) as a neutral carrier exhibited an enhanced selectivity to potassium ion over sodium ion compared to those prepared with other 15-crown-5 or 18-crown-6 derivatives. The potentiometric properties (response slope, selectivity, detection limits and lifetime) of TB15C5-based ISE membranes along with those based on valinomycin, benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5), 4'-aminobenzo-15-crouwn-5 (AB15C5), benzo-18-crown-6 (B18C6), dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) and bis[(benzo-15-crown-5)-4'-ylmethyl]pimelate (PI-Ⅱ) ionophores were carefully examined under the same experimental conditions. The enhanced selectivity of TB15C5-based membrane to potassium is explained in terms of the effect of the benzothiazol functional group and the distribution coefficients of metal ions.
