  • This paper presents the fabrication and testing of a polysilicon piezoresistive accelerometer with p+ silicon diaphragm by simple process such as two step photolithography for the RIE process to form the cantilevers and a deep anisotropic etch process for the complete fabrication of the accelerometer. The fabricated accelerometer consists of a seismic mass and four cantilevers on which polysilicon piezoresistors are formed. The measurement of the output signal from the bridge circuit of the fabricated accelerometer is carried out with the HP 3582A spectrum analyzer. The analysis of the experimental result is showed in terms of the sensitivity and the resonant frequency. At atmospheric condition, the measurement values of the sensitivity and the resonant frequency are $11\;{\mu}V/Vg$ and 475 Hz, respectively.

  • In this paper, a systematic design method on an IPMC(ionic polymer-metal composite)-driven ZNMF(zero-net-mass-flux) pump is introduced for the flow control of an MAV's (micro air vehicle) wing. Since the IPMC is able to generate a large deformation under a low input voltage along with its ability to operate in air, and is easier to be manufactured in a small size, it is considered to be an ideal material of the actuating diaphragm. Through the numerical methods, an optimal shape of the IPMC diaphragm was found for maximizing the stroke volume. Based on the optimal IPMC diaphragm, a proto-type ZNMF pump with a slot, was designed. By using the flight speed of the MAV considered in this work, the driving frequencies(~ 40 Hz) of IPMC diaphragm, and the flow velocity through the pump's slot, the calculated non-dimensional frequency and the momentum coefficient ensure the feasibility of the designed ZNMF pump as a flow control device.

  • A speaker diaphragm generates a divided vibration. The influence of the break-up mode is sufficient to cause a shape change in the diaphragm. In this paper, is widely used in ultra-thin multi-media devices, including smart phones is the advance guard of the IT sector, the micro-speakers and its target. Micro-speakers are different from general speakers. The plate has structural form and space constraints. In particular, they utilize a closed-type drive space. It is difficult to provide cooling for the auxiliary suspension structure because of the heat generated in the moving coil. The present study considered the relationship between the break-up mode and the heat transfer of the diaphragm. An experiment was conducted in two stages to compare the embodiment of the break-up mode and heat transfer in a certain frequency range. The changes in the heat were determined through measurements and thermal imaging of the break-up mode. The break-up mode tendency of the diaphragm could be rapidly predicted based on the imaging results using the thermal imaging camera. This will help in the optimal design of micro-speakers.

  • To deal with tumor motion from respiration is one of the important issues for the advanced treatment techniques, such as the intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), the image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), the three dimensional conformal therapy (3D-CRT) and the Cyber Knife. Studies including the active breath control (ABC) and the gated radiation therapy have been reported. Authors have developed the device for reducing the respiration effects and the diaphragm motions with this device were observed to determined the effectiveness of the device. The device consists of four belts to immobilize diaphragm motion and the vacuum cushion. Diaphragm motions without and with device were monitored fluoroscopically. Diaphragm motion ranges were found to be 1.14 ~ 3.14 cm (average 2.14 cm) without the device and 0.72~1.95 cm (average 1.16 cm) with the device. The motion ranges were decreased 20 ~ 68.4% (average 44.9%.) However, the respiration cycle was increased from 4.4 seconds to 3.7 seconds. The CTV-PTV margin could be decreased significantly with the device developed in this study, which may be applied to the treatments of the tumor sited diaphragm region.

  • A method to measure the distortions of the loudspeaker at low frequencies without an anechoic chamber is proposed. This method utilizes the fact that the n-th harmonic distortion outside the enclosure is boosted by 40log n dB compared to that inside the enclosure. By compensating for the effect of standing waves occuring inside the enclosure, it is possible to predict the distortions for wide frequency ranges below the first break-up frequency of the diaphragm. The method is applicable to the intermodulation distortion as well.

  • Miniature ultrasonic and tactile sensors on Si substrate have been proposed, fabricated and characterized to detect objects for a dexterous robot. The ultrasonic sensor consists of piezoelectric PZT thin film on a Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$ and/or Si diaphragm fabricated using a micromachining technique; the ultrasonic sensor detects the piezoelectric voltage as an ultrasonic wave. The sensitivity has been enhanced by improving the device structure, and the resonant frequency in the array sensor has been equalized. Position detection has been carried out by using a sensor array with high sensitivity and uniform resonant frequency. The tactile sensor consists of four or three warped cantilevers which have NiCr or $Si:B^+$ piezoresistive layer for stress detection. Normal and shear stresses can be estimated by calculation using resistance changes of the piezoresitive layers on the cantilevers. Gripping state has been identified by using the tactile sensor which is installed on finger of a robot hand, and friction of objects has been measured by slipping the sensor.

  • Pneumatic vibration isolator has a wide application for ground-vibration isolation of vibration-sensitive equipments. Recent advances In precision machine tools and instruments such as nano-technology or medical devices require a better isolation performance, which can be efficiently done by precise modeling- and design- of the isolation system. This paper will discuss an efficient transmissibility design method for pneumatic vibration isolator by employing the complex stiffness model of dual-chamber pneumatic spring developed in our previous research. Three design parameters of volume ratio between the two pneumatic chambers, the geometry of capillary tube connecting the two pneumatic chambers and finally the stiffness of diaphragm necessarily employed for prevention of air leakage were found to be important factors in transmissibility design. Based on design technique that maximizes damping of dual-chamber pneumatic spring, trade-off among the resonance frequency of transmissibility, peak transmissibility and transmissibility in high frequency range was found, which was not ever stated in previous researches. Furthermore this paper will discuss about negative role of diaphragm in transmissibility design. Then the design method proposed in this paper will be illustrated through experiment at measurements.

  • In this work, a new type speaker which features various resonant frequencies is proposed utilizing a magneto-rheological (MR) fluid and its performance is evaluated in terms of the change of the field-dependent sound pressure level. In order to achieve this goal, a whole concept of the speaker system is firstly discussed and subsequently a controllable diaphragm is made using MR fluid whose rheological properties such as viscosity are controllable by the magnitude of magnetic field. Then, the proposed speaker system consisting of the inner structure and the squeeze mode type of MR diaphragm is established in an anechoic room The effectiveness of the proposed speaker system is experimentally evaluated at two different conditions; with and without the magnetic field. It is shown from experimental tests that the sound pressure level at different sound source can be controlled which is not able to achieve using one conventional speaker system.
