  • Two-step growth method is suggested to enhance the alignment of highly oriented diamond films. (100) Si wafers are pretreated with negative biasing of - 200 V at $850^{\circ}C$ for 20 min with 4 % methane in hydrogen plasma. The pretreated wafers are grown under the lst-step growth conditions(2 % CH$_4$ in H$_2$, $810^{\circ}C$) from 2 hr to 35 hr, in order to obtain <100> textured films. The 2nd-step growth(2 % CH$_4$ in H$_2$, $850^{\circ}C$) is carried out to make diamond films having (100) growth planes, which are parallel to the substrate. The alignment of the films after the 1st-step growth, has been analyzed by {111} X-ray pole figure, which is improved abruptly with increasing film thickness. However, the pyramidal surface morphology is inevitable. These morphology is flattened after the 2nd-step growth by developing the (100) facets parallel to the substrate. The alignment of the highly oriented textured films after the two-step growth depends on the thickness of the 1st-step growth film.

  • A diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were deposited on the borosilicate glass substrate by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical deposition(rf-PECVD). The $methane(CH_4)-hydrogen(H_2)$ gas mixture was used as precursor gas. The morphologies, the structure and the optical properties of the DLC films were investigated by SEM, Raman and UV spectrometer. The deposition rate was slightly increased with the hydrogen concentration in the gas mixture and it maintained constant at over 25 sccm of the gas flow rate. The optical band gap calculated by UV spectra decreased with increase of deposition time and DC self bias, but that were not effected by hydrogen content. Most effective parameter on the transmittance of film was bias voltage, especially in the range of ultra violet and visible light.

  • Graphite has excellent mechanical and physical properties. It is known to advanced materials and is used to materials for molds, thermal treatment of furnace, sinter of diamond and cemented carbide tool etc. SiC materials are coated on the surface and holes of graphite to protect particles emitted from porous graphite with 5%~20% porosity and make graphite hard surface. SiC materials have high durability and thermal stability. Thermal CVD method is widely used to manufacture SiC thin films but high cost of machine investment and production are required. SiC thin films manufactured by Si reaction liquid and vapore with carbon are effective because of low cost of machine and production. SiC thin films made by vapor silicon infiltration into porous graphite can be obtained for shorter time than liquid silicon. Si materials are evaporated to the graphite surface in about $10^{-2}$ torr and high temperature. Si materials are melted in $1410^{\circ}C$. Si vapor is infiltrated into the surface hole of porous graphite and $Si_xC_y$ compound is made. $Si_x$ component is proportional to the Si vapor concentration. Si diffusion coefficient is estimated from quadratic equation obtained by Fick's second law. The steady stae is assumed. Si concentration variation for the depth from graphite surface is fitted to quadratic equation. Diffusion coefficient of Si vapor is estimated at about $10^{-8}cm^2s^{-1}$.

  • Effects of the substrate pretreatment on uncleation density of the diamond thin films have been investigated. The film was prepared using the hot-filament CVD reactor with the mixture of methane and hydrogen. The substrate pretreatment was done in three different ways: predeposition of carbon on the substrate, soot on the substrate, and graphite on the substrate. All three cases enhanced the nucleation density of diamond. And the effect was more marked in the first and the second cases than in the third one. In the first case where the substrate was predeposited by the carbon phase, a very smooth and uniform film of diamond could be obtained. Since the bound strength between the substrate and the predeposited carbon phase is relatively weak, separation of the diamond film layer from the substrate was found to be easy.

  • The material with superior biocompatibility and physical-chemical stability is required to fabricate high sensitive biosensors. Many kinds of biomaterials have been evaluated to apply for bioindustry. Recently, carbon based diamond and graphene thin films have been focal pointed as bio applications and their possibility is partially evaluated. Diamond thin film has many advantages for electrochemical and biological applications, such as wide potential window (3.0~3.5V), low background current and chemical-physical stability. And graphene film has many advantages as biomaterial, chemical-physical stability and conductivity. In this work, we have cultured human nerve cell (SH-SY5Y) on the nanocrystalline diamond, mirocrystalline diamond, graphene film and cell culture dish. We use MTT assay to evaluate the characteristics of cell culture on the substrates. As a result, nerve cell is well cultured on the carbon based diamond and graphene films as similar as cell culture dish. We expect that carbon materials have been applied for bioindustry such as biosensors.

  • In this study, two novel methods to measure the surface hardness of anodic oxide films on aluminum alloys are reported. The first method is to impregnate oil-based ink into pores in the anodic oxide film and then to clean the ink on the surface using ethanol, resulting in an impregnation of inks only inside of the pores in anodic oxide film. The second method is to coat the anodic oxide film surface with thin Au layer less than 0.1 ?. Both the ink-impregnating method and Au-coating method provided clear indentation marks on the anodic oxide film surface when it was indented using a pyramidal-diamond penetrator. Thus, Vickers hardness of anodic oxide films on aluminium alloy could be measured successfully and precisely from the anodic film surface. In addition, advantages and disadvantages of the ink-impregnating method and Au-coating method for the measurement of surface hardness of anodic oxide films are discussed.

  • This study examined the friction and wear behavior of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films deposited from a radio frequency glow discharge using a hydrogen diluted benzene gas mixture. The DLC films were deposited on Si (100) and polished stainless steel substrates by r.f.-PACVD at hydrogen to benzene ratios, or the hydrogen dilution ratio, ranging from 0 to 2.0. The wear test was carried out in both ambient and aqueous environments using a home-made ball-on-disk type wear rig. The stability of the DLC coating in an aqueous environment was improved by diluting the benzene precursor gas with hydrogen, suggesting that hydrogen dilution during the deposition of DLC films suppress the initiation of defects in the film and improved the adhesion of the coating to the interface.

  • We have studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effects on a nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer with ion beam irradiation. The pretilt angle for NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam exposure was observed below 1 degree. Also, we had the good LC alignment characteristics on the NDLC thin films with ion beam exposure of 1800 eV. In thermal stability experiments, the alignment defect of the NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam irradiation above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ can be observed. Therefore, the good thermal stability and LC alignment for NLC by ion beam aligned NDLC thin films can be achieved.

  • Residual stress is a dominant obstacle to efficient production and safe usage of device by deteriorating the mechanical strength and failure properties. Therefore, we proposed a new thin film stress-analyzing technique using a nanoindentation method. For this aim, the shape change in the indentation load-depth curve during the stress-relief in film was theoretically modeled. The change in indentation depth by load-controlled stress relaxation process was related to the increase or decrease in the applied load using the elastic flat punch theory. Finally, the residual stress in thin film was calculated from the changed applied load based on the equivalent stress interaction model. The evaluated stresses for diamond-like carbon films from this nanoindentation analysis were consistent with the results from the conventional curvature method.
