DOES THE JET PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY OF RADIO GALAXIES CONTROL THEIR OPTICAL AGN TYPES?

  • The jet production efficiency of radio galaxies can be quantified by comparison of their kinetic jet powers $P_{jet}$ and Bondi accretion powers $P_B$. These two parameters are known to be related linearly, with the jet power resulting from the Bondi power by multiplication with an efficiency factor of order 1%. Using a recently published (Nemmen & Tchekhovskoy 2014) high-quality sample of 27 radio galaxies, I construct a $P_B$ - $P_{jet}$ diagram that includes information on optical AGN types as far as available. This diagram indicates that the jet production efficiency is a function of AGN type: Seyfert 2 galaxies seem to be systematically (with a false alarm probability of $4.3{\times}10^{-4}$) less efficient, by about one order of magnitude, in powering jets than Seyfert 1 galaxies, LINERs, or the remaining radio galaxies. This suggests an evolutionary sequence from Sy 2s to Sy 1s and LINERs, controlled by an interplay of jets on the one hand and dust and gas in galactic nuclei on the other hand. When taking this effect into account, the $P_B$ - $P_{jet}$ relation is probably much tighter intrinsically than currently assumed.

  • 철도운영기관은 수송수요예측과 열차차량의 수송능력을 토대로 수송계획을 세우고 이에 따른 열차운행계획을 수립한다. 열차운행계획을 통해 열차 운행간격이 조정되어 열차운행시간표(열차다이아)가 작성되고, 열차운행에 사용되는 열차의 차량운영계획이 수립된다. 열차운영기관에서는 열차 운영관리의 효율성을 높이기 위해 다이아에 편성되어진 열차들의 승무인원을 판단하고 배치하는 승무일정계획을 수립해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 승무일정계획 문제인 승무다이아 작성단계에 제약조건을 만족하는 이웃해 탐색기법을 적용하여 승무 계획의 효율적 관리가 가능하도록 하는 방법론을 제시한다. 연구에서 제시한 방법론에 의해 생성된 승무 다이아는 실제 운영하는 열차시간표를 대상으로 기존 승무다이아와 결과 값을 비교하여 제시된 방법론의 효율성을 검증하였다.

  • Owing to the need to accommodate the load variation, thermal power plants need a modern controller in order to achieve better frequency regulation, faster response and higher efficiency. For a successful development of the digital instrumentation and control system that can adopt advanced control algorithms, power plant simulator must be available for safe and convenient test. In this paper, a simple drum-type boiler model is proposed using Signal Flow Diagram that describes the system by a combination of basic time responses representing the relationships between cause and effect process variables. After verifying the model and thereafter building a simulator based on the proposed model, we tested the operation of the controller and stability or efficiency of the implemented control algorithms.

  • Railway has recently played an important role in preventing global warming caused by green house gases and furthering a low carbon green growth, The various railway research centers have conducted facilitated studies on saving energy. In particular, urban railway has emerged as the best means of public transportation in terms of punctuality, safety and environmentally friendliness. There are various ways to save energy in terms of operation of urban railway system, and they can be generally divided into hardware aspects that pertain to structure of vehicles and development of control system and software aspects that pertain to effective operation of trains based on operation patterns and diagram control. In this paper, we investigated drive assistance system for railway energy efficiency. The railway operation patterns and train diagram management programs were researched.

근접요구도와 버블다이어그램을 적용한 1300식 규모의 학교급식 시설 설계 모델 (A Facility Design Model for 1300 Capacity School Foodservice with Adjacency and Bubble Diagrams)

  • This study aimed to suggest a 1300 scale of a middle school foodservice facility floor plan which was compliant to the principle of HACCP, as well as ensuring food and work safety, and the flow of personnel and food materials. which consisted of 46 nutrition teachers and 6 experts, responded with a questionnaire on the relationship of functional area and space. Using their opinions, key principles for the design of the facility were single direction movement of food materials, customers and workers; minimization of the cross-contamination through the separation of functional space; and securement of customer-focused efficiency; staff-centered convenience and efficiency; and work and food safety. After the completion of an adjacency diagram, bubble diagram and program statement, the functional areas of a 1300 scale middle school food-service facility were allocated as follows: $9.9\;m^2$ for the receiving area, $56.1\;m^2$ for the pre-preparation area, $10.5\;m^2$ for the food storage area, $6.0\;m^2$ for the supplies storage area, $97.8\;m^2$ for the cooking area, $33.6\;m^2$ for the service area, $52.5\;m^2$ for dish washing area, cafeteria $410.5\;m^2$, $4.5\;m^2$ for the front room, for a total of $725.8\;m^2$. Expert groups have pointed to limitations within this model as there are no windows in the office for the influx of fresh outside air and a need for the straight line installation of steam-jacket and frying kettles on the sides of windows. This study can be useful as the guidelines for estimating the investment cost of the facility and placing the placement of functional areas and equipment in the renovation of the facility. It can be also useful data for a methodology of foodservice facility design.

An Efficient Method for the Mass Unbalance Analysis of a Rotor System Using FFT and Lissajous Diagram

  • Unbalance analysis is essential in the rotor system. However, some problems still remain in the aspects of computational efficiency and accuracy. In the present paper a new method is proposed for estimating the mass unbalance of a rotating shaft by using the vibration signals. This is an advanced new method for the detection of a mass unbalance and its phase position. Based on the signal processing with FFT, an estimator is designed to detect the mass of unbalance. And an improved Lissajous diagram is also introduced with statistical analysis, which make it possible to compute the phase position of the mass unbalance efficiently and arranged at a certain location of the shaft. The proposed method is demonstrated and validated through several test examples.

  • The portable mobile devices with high performance and high speed 5G network activate and explode the demands for ubiquitous information services that remove the limitations of time for the communication and places to request for the information. NN (Nearest Neighbor) search is one of the most important types of queries to be processed efficiently in the information services. Various indexes have been proposed to support efficient NN search in the wireless broadcast system. The indexes adopting Hilbert curve, grid partition or Voronoi diagram enable the clients to search for NN quickly in the wireless broadcast channel. It is necessary that an efficient means to evaluate the performances of various indexes. In this paper, we propose an open framework that can adopt a variety of indexing schemes and evaluate and compare the performances of them. The proposed framework is organized with open and flexible structure that can adopt hybrid indexing schemes extensible to Voronoi diagram as well as simple indexing schemes. With the implemented framework, we demonstrate the efficiency and scalability and flexibility of the proposed framework by evaluating various indexing schemes for NN query.

Utilizing Usability Metrics to Evaluate a Subway Map Design

  • Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of two representative subway map design types, namely a diagram type and a geographical type using physiological metrics, performance metrics, and self-reported metrics, which are representative usability metrics. Background: Subway maps need to be designed in order for users to quickly search and recognize subway line information. Although most cities' subway maps currently use the diagram type designed by Henry Beck, New York City's subway map has recently been changed to the subway map type combined with the geographical type designed by Michael Hertz. However, not many studies on its efficiency are found, and the studies that are available mainly depend on questionnaire surveys or take on a subjective behavioral study type based on experts' experiences. In this regard, evaluation through a more objective method is needed. Method: This study employed usability metrics as a method to evaluate the efficiency of information search targeting the diagram type and geographical type subway maps used mostly as subway maps. To this end, physiological metrics obtained through eye tracking, task completion time, representative metric of task performance, and subjective evaluation metrics were used for the suitability evaluation of subway map designs. Results: In the result of gaze movement distance analysis, no significant difference was shown in the two design types in terms of a process finding a departure station from the starting point and a process finding a transfer station between the departure station and arrival station (destination). However, the gaze movement distance in the process finding the arrival station at the departure station was significantly shorter in the geographical type, rather than in the diagram type. The analysis of task completion time showed a result similar to the gaze movement distance analysis result. Task completion time was significantly shorter in the geographical type, rather than in the diagram type, which is in the process finding the arrival station at the departure station. In other information search processes, no significant difference was shown. As a result of subjective evaluation metrics analysis, no significant difference was revealed in the two design types. Conclusion: An analysis on the two representative subway map design types was carried out via the adoption of usability metrics. As a result, although no significant difference was shown in some information search processes, it was revealed that information search was easier in the geographical type overall. Also, it was found that usability metrics can be effectively used to evaluate the design types of subway maps. Application: The study results can be used to set design direction to offer ease in information search on subway lines. The study also can be used as a method to evaluate a subway map's design type.

반동도에 따른 증기터빈의 설계 및 성능해석 (Design and Performance Analysis of Steam Turbine for Variations of Degree of Reaction)

  • 반동도에 따른 증기터빈의 설계 및 성능 해석을 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션으로 수행하였다. 깃 각도와 출구면적, 노즐면적과 같은 설계변수들과 터빈동력, 선도효율, 축방향 추력과 같은 성능변수들을 반동도에 따라 나타내었다. 추가적인 설계 및 성능변수에 대한 정보를 제공하기 위하여, 깃 각도와 터빈동력, 선도효율, 축방향 추력과 같은 주된 설계 및 성능변수들을 유동계수(주속도에 대한 축방향속도)의 함수로 제시하였다. 터빈동력, 선도효율을 최대로 하는 반동도 및 유동계수가 존재함이 밝혀졌으며, 반동도가 증가함에 따라 동익의 깃 형상은 대칭형으로부터 많이 벗어남을 보여주었다.
