  • Recently, in an effort to reduce the energy efficiency design index (EEDI), studies on energy saving devices (ESDs) have been conducted. In this study, we designed a post-device suitable for a KRISO container ship (KCS) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In order to increase the efficiency of the post-device, a twisted rudder was used, which has a proven performance (showing a 1.34% reduction in DHP compared to the bare hull at 24 knots) in previous research at Pusan National University. In addition, an increase in efficiency was expected by the use of a rudder bulb, including the discontinuous section of the twisted rudder and a divergent propeller cap to prevent the contraction of the wake. The optimization criterion was the case where the delivery power was the least compared with the bare hull. We analyzed the cause of the efficiency increase through an analysis of the self-propulsion factor. The case study for optimization was divided into 4 types (1. clearance of the bulb and cap, 2. shape of the bulb, 3. size of the bulb and cap, and 4. asymmetric bulb). Finally, with a clearance of 50 mm from the ship, a spherical bulb with the cap having an angle of $5^{\circ}$, and an asymmetric rudder bulb with a bulb diameter of 1.2HH/1.4H (horizontal/vertical) showed a 2.05% reduction in DHP compared to the bare hull at 24 knots. We will fabricate a post-device that will be optimized in the future and verify the performance of the post-device through model tests.

  • The electrical medical device market have been expanded since the public interest in healthy living that has deepened together with the global health trend of the aging population. The external hand-held ultrasonic probe is a frequently approved medical device and it is commonly used in the clinical field. However, there is no obvious standard or a guideline in Korea on regarding evaluation of performance of such external hand-held ultrasonic probe for approval and quality management. In this study, local and foreign reference standards were reviewed to propose performance test standards and methods after conducting characteristic of probe, market, and permission status. In addition, such proposed test items were validated to develop a draft guideline that is internationally harmonized for performance evaluation. This study is expected not only improve the quality and performance of the external hand-held ultrasonic probe but also contribute to securing consistency of permission and evaluation works for approval.

  • Recently, as GPU performance has improved in HPC and artificial intelligence, its use is becoming more common, but GPU programming is still a big obstacle in terms of productivity. In particular, due to the difficulty of managing host memory and GPU memory separately, research is being actively conducted in terms of convenience and performance, and various CPU-GPU memory transfer programming methods are suggested. Meanwhile, recently many SoC (System on a Chip) products such as Apple M1 and NVIDIA Tegra that bundle CPU, GPU, and integrated memory into one large silicon package are emerging. In this study, data between CPU and GPU devices are used in such an integrated memory device and performance-related research is conducted during transmission. It shows different characteristics from the existing environment in which the host memory and GPU memory in the CPU are separated. Here, we want to compare performance by CPU-GPU data transmission method in NVIDIA SoC chips, which are integrated memory devices, and NVIDIA SMX-based V100 GPU devices. For the experimental workload for performance comparison, a two-dimensional matrix transposition example frequently used in HPC applications was used. We analyzed the following performance factors: the difference in GPU kernel performance according to the CPU-GPU memory transfer method for each GPU device, the transfer performance difference between page-locked memory and pageable memory, overall performance comparison, and performance comparison by workload size. Through this experiment, it was confirmed that the NVIDIA Xavier can maximize the benefits of integrated memory in the SoC chip by supporting I/O cache consistency.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to develop the assistive device for accelerator and brake pedals using bio-signals from the prefrontal lobe in the driving simulator and evaluate its performance. Background: There is lack of assistive devices for the driving in peoples with disabilities in Korea. However, if bio-signals and/or brain waves are used at driving a car, the people with serious physical limitations can improve their community mobility. Method: 15 subjects with driver's license participated in this study for experiment of driving performance evaluation in the simulator. Each subject drove the simulator the same course 10 times in three separated groups which use different interface controllers to accelerate and brake: (1) conventional pedal group, (2) joystick group and (3) bio-signal group(horizontal quick glance of the eyes and clench teeth). All experiments were recorded and the driving performances were evaluated by three inspectors. Results: Average score of bio-signal group for the driving in the simulator was increased 3% compared with the pedal group and was increased 9% compared with the joystick group(p<0.01). The subjects using bio-signals was decreased 44% in number of deduction compared with others because the device had the built-in modified cruise control. Conclusion: The assistive device for accelerator and brake pedals using bio-signals showed significantly better performance than using general pedal and a joystick interface(p<0.01). Application: This study can be used to design adaptive vehicle for driving in people with disabilities.

  • In this paper, hot carrier induced performance degradation of peripheral circuits in memory devices such as static type imput buffer, latch type imput buffer and sense amplifier circuit has been measured and analyzed. The used design and fabrication of the peripheral circuits were $0.8 {\mu}m$ standard CMOS process. The analysis method is to find out which device is most significantly degraded in test circuits by using spice simulation, and then to characterize the correlation between device and circuit performance degradation. From the result of the performance degradation of static type input buffer, the trip point was increased due to the transconductance degradation of NMOS. In the case of latch type input buffer, there was a time delay due to the transconductance degradation of NMOS device. Finally, hot carrier induced the decrease of half-Vcc voltage and the increased of sensing voltage in sense amplifier circuits have been measured.

  • As a new technical approach, a hydraulic and magnetic clamp device was attempted to realize a magnetic clamp crane system that uses 8 simultaneously actuating individual hydraulic cylinders. Through this approach, a Sr type of ferritic permanent magnet ($SrO{\cdot}6Fe_2O_3$), not the previously employed electro-magnet, was utilized for the purpose of lifting and transporting the heavy weighted and oversized curved steel plates used for manufacturing the ships. This study is aimed at manufacturing and developing the hydraulic magnetic clamp prototype, which is composed of three main parts - the base frame, cylinder joint, and magnet joint - in order to safely transport such curved steel plates. Furthermore, this research was pursued to conduct a performance evaluation as to the prototype manufacture and acquire the planned quantity value and the development purpose items. The most significant item for a performance evaluation was estimated for the magnetic adhesive force (G) and in this process, a ferritic permanent magnet (Sr type) with 3700~4000 G of residual induction (Br) and 2640/2770 Oe of coercive force (Hc) was utilized. In addition, other relevant items such as hoist tension (kN), transportation time (sec), and the applied load (Kgf) exerted on the hydraulic cylinders were also evaluated in order to acquire the optimum quantity value. As a result of the evaluation, the relevant device turned out to be suitable for safely transporting the curved steel plates.

  • Compressed filesystem is frequently used in the embedded system to increase cost efficiency. One of the drawbacks of compressed filesystem is low read performance. Moreover, read-ahead mechanism that improves the read throughput of storage device has negative effect on the read performance of compressed filesystem, increasing read latency. Main reason is that compressed filesystem has too big read-ahead miss penalty due to decompression overhead. To solve this problem, this paper proposes new read technique considering kernel read-ahead mechanism for compressed filesystem. Proposed technique improves read throughput of device by bulk read from device and reduces decompression overhead of compressed filesystem by selective decompression. We implement proposed technique by modifying CramFS and evaluate our implementation in the Linux kernel 2.6.21. Performance evaluation results show that proposed technique reduces the average major page fault handling latency by 28%.
