  • In many construction projects, progress and efficiency are hampered by poor communication of discipline-specific models. For example, architects use 2D or 3D CAD models and builders use CPM diagrams, Gantt charts, and spreadsheets to show their view of the project. Nowadays, advanced computer visualization tools, 4D CAD or VR, can show these disparate models to understand cross-disciplinary impacts of design and construction decisions. In Korea, several leading companies have tried to apply these tools to their pilot projects from the design phase to the maintenance phase. These companies have expected that more project stakeholders could understand a construction schedule more quickly and completely with 4D visualization than with the traditional construction management tools. However, modeling of the 4D CAD or VR can be quite time-consuming and expensive to generate manually and has therefore limited the spread and use of these models. In order to adopt widely those models in construction industry, the areas that those tools could support to take large benefits in diverse functional areas of construction management need to be analyzed. In this study, researchers analyze the usefulness and limitations of the 4D models and VR in the construction industry, develop the strategy of application priority, and improve the 4D modeling method.

  • This paper is focused on the introduction of the types of models and explanation of the fundamental concepts and theory for development and use of the corporate planning and modeling system. Nowadays, a great deal of companies have been or experimenting with some form of a corporate planning and modeling system to support managerial and strategic decision making. From previous studies it was noted that most applications have tended to be financially based. This trend will probably continue. However, with the software and hardware currently available it is likely that companies will move more toward integrated models that link marketing, production, as will as financial areas. More emphasis will undoubtedly be placed on the use of econometric modeling, since this subelement of the overall planning and modeling process is closely tied to the market place and the economy. At any rate, wherever the development of corporate planning and modeling system is directed, clear understanding for the fundamental concepts and elements of the system is settled in advance in order to develope and use it.

  • Software acquisition involves purchase of new technology as well as the product itself. Consequently, evaluation of candidate packages or development contractors requires formal models that can objectively compare the candidates' technological characteristics with respect to user requirements. This paper proposes three technological evaluation models for software acquisition : 1) a structural model dthat organizes the technological factors to be evaluated, 2) a scoring model that quantifies the candidates' technological values, and 3) an organization model that orgnizes and assigns responsibilities to technical evaluators. Three models, initially built on expert surveys and later refined through interviews with opinion leaders, are primarily intended for governmental use : the Korean government is expected to use these models as the software acquisition standards starting in 1994.

  • Crop growth simulation models have been developed as research and management tools. When these models are needed to incorporate new knowledge on phenology and physiology of crops, programming languages have been used for development and documentation of these models. However, researchers may have limited skill in programming languages. Furthermore, software developer may find it challenging to improve the crop models because documentation of the models are rarely available. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) can provide a simple approach for development and documentation of model. A template for implementation of the model can be obtained using the UML, which would facilitate code re-use and model improvement.

  • Leaf area index (LAI) is important in explaining the ability of the crop to intercept solar energy for biomass production and in understanding the impact of crop management practices. This paper describes a procedure for estimating LAI as a function of image-derived vegetation indices from temporal series of IKONOS, Landsat TM, and MODIS satellite images using empirical models and demonstrates its use with data collected at Missouri field sites. LAI data were obtained several times during the 2002 growing season at monitoring sites established in two central Missouri experimental fields, one planted to soybean (Glycine max L.) and the other planted to corn (Zea mays L.). Satellite images at varying spatial and spectral resolutions were acquired and the data were extracted to calculate normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) after geometric and atmospheric correction. Linear, exponential, and expolinear models were developed to relate temporal NDVI to measured LAI data. Models using IKONOS NDVI estimated LAI of both soybean and corn better than those using Landsat TM or MODIS NDVI. Expolinear models provided more accurate results than linear or exponential models.

  • In the systems and software modeling field, a conceptual model involves modeling with concepts to support development and design. An example of a conceptual model is a description developed using the Unified Modeling Language (UML). UML uses a model multiplicity formulation approach, wherein a number of models are used to represent alternative views. By contrast, a model singularity approach uses only a single integrated model. Each of these styles of modeling has its strengths and weaknesses. This paper introduces a partial solution to the issue of multiplicity vs. singularity in modeling by adopting UML use cases and class models into the conceptual thinging machine (TM) model. To apply use cases, we adopt the observation that a use-case diagram is a description that shows the internal structure of the part of the system represented by the use case in addition to being useful to people outside of the system. Additionally, the UML class diagram is recast in TM representation. Accordingly, we develop a TMUML model that embraces the TM specification of the UML class diagram and the internal structure extracted from the UML use case. TMUML modeling introduces some of the advantages that have made UML a popular modeling language to TM modeling. At the same time, this approach supplies UML with partial model singularity. The paper details experimentation with TMUML using examples from the literature. Our results indicate that mixing UML with other models could be a viable approach.

  • Water quality models are scientific tools that simulate and interpret the relationship between physical, chemical and biological reactions to external pollutant loads in water systems. They are actively used as a key technology in environmental water management. With recent advances in computational power, water quality modeling technology has evolved into a coupled three-dimensional modeling of hydrodynamics, water quality, and ecological inputs. However, there is uncertainty in the simulated results due to the increasing model complexity, knowledge gaps in simulating complex aquatic ecosystem, and the distrust of stakeholders due to nontransparent modeling processes. These issues have become difficult obstacles for the practical use of water quality models in the water management decision process. The objectives of this paper were to review the theoretical background, needs, and development status of water quality modeling technology. Additionally, we present the potential future directions of water quality modeling technology as a scientific tool for national environmental water management. The main development directions can be summarized as follows: quantification of parameter sensitivities and model uncertainty, acquisition and use of high frequency and high resolution data based on IoT sensor technology, conjunctive use of mechanistic models and data-driven models, and securing transparency in the water quality modeling process. These advances in the field of water quality modeling warrant joint research with modeling experts, statisticians, and ecologists, combined with active communication between policy makers and stakeholders.

  • The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal gets delayed as it goes through the troposphere before reaching the GNSS antenna. Various tropospheric models are being used to correct the tropospheric delay. In this study, we compared effectiveness of two popular troposphere correction models: Global Pressure and Temperature (GPT) and Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS). One-year data from a particular site was chosen as the test case. Tropospheric delays were computed using the GPT and SBAS models and compared with the International GNSS Service tropospheric product. The bias of SBAS model computations was 3.4 cm, which is four times lower than that of the GPT model. The cause of higher biases observed in the GPT model is the fact that one cannot get wet delays from the model. If SBAS-based wet delays are added to the hydrostatic delays computed using the GPT model, then the accuracy is similar to that of the full SBAS model. From this study, one can conclude that it is better to use the SBAS model than to use the GPT model in the standard code-pseudorange data processing.

  • The use of external carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) wraps is one of the most effective techniques existing for the confinement of the circular concrete columns. Currently, several researches have been made to develop models for predicting the behavior of this type of confinement. The disadvantage of the most models, is to not take into account the contribution of the transverse steel reinforcements (TSR) effect, However, very limited models have been recently developed that considers this combined effect and gives less accurate results. This paper presents the development of a new model for the axial behavior of circular concrete columns confined by combining external CFRP warps-and-internal TSR (hoops or spirals) based on the existing experimental data. The comparison between the proposed model and the experimental results showed good agreement comparing to the several existing models. Moreover, the expressions of estimating the ultimate strength and the corresponding strain are simple and precise, which make it easy to use in the design applications.

  • Most regression models of anthropometric variables use stature and/or weight as regressors; however, these 'flat' regression models result in large errors for anthropometric variables having low correlations with the regressors. To develop more accurate regression models for anthropometric variables, this study proposed a method to estimate anthropometric variables in a hierarchical manner based on the relationships among the variables and a process to develop and improve corresponding regression models. By applying the proposed approach, a hierarchical estimation structure was constructed for 59 anthropometric variables selected for the occupant package design of a passenger car and corresponding regression models were developed with the 1988 US Army anthropometric survey data. The hierarchical regression models were compared with the corresponding flat regression models in terms of accuracy. As results, the standard errors of the hierarchical regression models decreased by 28% (4.3mm) on average compared with those of the flat models.
