Tunnels are generally constructed below the ground water table, which produces a long-term interaction between the tunnel lining and the surrounding geo-materials. Thus, in conjunction with tunnel design, the presence of water may require a number of considerations such as: leakage and water load. It has been reported that deterioration of a drainage system of tunnels is one of the main factors governing the long-term hydraulic and structural lining-ground interaction. Therefore, the design procedure of an underwater tunnel should address any detrimental effects associated with this interaction. In this paper an attempt to identify the coupled structural and hydraulic interaction between the lining and the ground was made using a numerical method. A main concern was given to local hindrance of flow into tunnels. Six cases of local deterioration of a drainage system were considered to investigate the effects of deterioration on tunnels. It is revealed that hindrance of flow increased pore-water pressure on the deteriorated areas, and caused detrimental effects on the lining structures. The analysis results were compared with those from fully permeable and impermeable linings.
There has been need for safety monitoring systems for the social infrastructures. These infrastructures are subject to degradation over time, reduced functionality, and loss of functionality as a result of factors such as a wide variety of installation environments, natural disasters, and nearby work. Therefore, it is necessary to perform appropriate inspections, repairs, and renovations to ensure safe and efficient maintenance and operation. This paper introduces the example of the development of the safety monitoring system for operating railway tunnel. Tunnel profile measuring system using laser beam, crack gauges, accelerometer and a pluviometer were implemented to monitor the safety of a deteriorated tunnel. The measured data were transferred through wireless network and analyzed in real time. The safety criteria for tunnel stabilities and train operations are also discussed.

In September 2007, the collapses of slopes and landslides are happened at Jeonlanamdo due to heavy rains accompanied with Typoon "Nari". The study area is the tunnel portal slope in new road construction site. This slope consists of pyroclastic rocks and has lots of faults. Particularly, the residual soils of the slope is deteriorated with yellowish mudstone layer as a results of chemical and physical weathering. This has a variety of swelling clay minerals and might be moved easily down at the gentle terrain. The inner factor of $\bigcirc\bigcirc$tunnel portal slope's collapse is the geological weak zone, the convergent topography, the inferiority of drainage and the heavy rain act on the failure as direct trigger.

It seems inevitable for residential buildings to be high-rise and allocated near traffic roads due to the overcrowding in urban area. Acoustic environment in those area has been seriously deteriorated by the increase of traffic vehicles. Commonly used sound barriers have a limitation in controlling noise due to diffraction noise of sound barrier. Hence sound barrier is not effective to attenuate noise especially for the residential units in high level. This work aims at evaluating noise reduction according to the tunnel section shape by using 1/5 scale model. We carried out a number of field measurements for 1/5 scale model of Noise Barrier Tunnel with various sectional shape. The results from predictions and the measurement show generally good agreement.
As the demand for urban underground space increases recently, urban tunnel planning is actively progressing. In the urban area, a underground station is planned in consideration of the living environment of residents, and 2-arch tunnel is applied for the stability of existing structures and reduction of environmental damage. However, since the depth of weak rock mass is deeply distributed in the urban area due to severe weathering, careful planning is required to secure tunnel stability. In addition, if TBM mechanical excavation is applied as the main tunnel excavation method considering the composite ground in urban area, the construction connectivity with the 2-arch tunnel of the NATM concept may be deteriorated. In this study, the design case of applying TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel for the first time in Korea was mainly described. The main considerations for the segment design of TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel were explained for side tunnels. Also, a stability analysis was conducted to verify the effectiveness and adequacy of the TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel.

Clogging phenomenon is one of the important problems in deteriorated tunnels, and it caused inhibition of drainage system by long-term behavior. Clogging phenomenon is mainly composed of $CaCO_3$ in the form calcite. Calcite is generally created by the reaction of $Ca(OH)_2$ with $CO_2$ emitted from vehicles. The structure of deteriorated tunnels was simulated and the setting of outflow from drainage pipe was observed in this study. The test was experienced by changing the slope of drainage system because existing drainage system was pracitced almost below $5^{\circ}$. As a result, in case of drainage system's slope is $2^{\circ}$, Quantum Stick has an effect for prohibiting scale in drainage system, but magnetic treatment was not effective. As a result, in case of drainage system's slope is $5^{\circ}$, both technologies were effective for prohibiting scale in drainage system, but Quantum Stick was especially more effective than magnetic treatment.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of treating the carpal tunnel syndrome by using both the Herbal Acupuncture and herbal medicine therapy on five cases. Methods: For the Herbal Acupuncture, Jungseonguhhyul No. 1 and Hwanglyunhaedoktang were used. For the herbal medicine, Dangguihwalhyul-tang was used. The patients were treated once in every two days; the result was evaluated after ten treatments. Patients' conditions were monitored through their testimony, phalen's test, nerve conduction study and electromyography. Results: In all five cases, the patients showed improvement; in four cases, the patients no longer had most of the clinical symptoms. Based on the result of the nerve conduction study, for the four cases in which the patients no longer displayed most of the clinical symptoms, their nerve conduction rate improved; for the remaining one case, the patient's nerve conduction rate deteriorated. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that combining the Herbal Acupuncture and herbal medicine therapy can have noticeable effects in treating the carpal tunnel syndrome; developing more variety of the herbal acupuncture would lead to even better treatment results.
The calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_{2}$) which is flowed into the deteriorated tunnel by groundwater is reacted with carbon dioxide($CO_{2}$) and the vehicle's exhaust gas ($SO_{3}$). So its by-products are precipitated at the drainage pipe and these cause the drainage clogging. Most by-products are composed of $CaCO_{3}$ with calcite from a chemical experiment. The purpose of this study is mainly focused on comparison of attachment on each material of drainage pipe (teflon-coated steel pipe, silicon-Oil coated pipe, acrylic pipe and PVC pipe). The test was progressed to disembogue the CaO aqueous solution and tunnel outflow into each of the pipes. The experimental results show that the most produced scale pipe is PVC material and the followings are Acrylic pipe, Silicon-Oil coating pipe and Teflon coating pipe. But the long-term test results showed that teflon-coated steel pipe had a problem with durability because soil which was contained in the tunnel outflow occurred detachment of coating and corrosion of the steel pipe.

Numbers of people living in high rise apartments are growing due to the overcrowding in urban area. Acoustic environment in those residential buildings has been seriously deteriorated by the increase of wheeled transports. Commonly used sound barriers have a limitation in controlling noise influencing higher part of a residential building. The use of noise barrier tunnels can be an alternative to supplement the defects of conventional noise barriers. But intensive measurements on noise levels at apartments vicinity of current noise barrier tunnels show that the tunnel now has a limited advantage on reducing the noise levels from arterial roads. The present work aims at providing an useful design tool In designing noise barrier tunnels for residential areas adjacent to roads. Number of field measurements, scale model measurements, and computer simulations were performed to ensure whether the prediction from scale model and computer simulation are appropriate. Result shows that the predictions from scale models and computer simulations could be valid prediction tools for designing sound barrier tunnels.
Clogging in drainage pipe is one of the important problems, so it needs a remedy urgently. Recently, scale in drainage pipe is removed by water jet cleaning and other treatment. But these treatments need much cost and regular management. The principal component of scale in drainage pipe is $CaCO_{3}$. It was observed the setting of $CaCO_{3}$ by some kind of analysis such as SEM, XRD, visual and weight measuring analysis to solve these problems and prevent setting formation in drainage pipe. As a result, in case of magnetic, particle shape of $CaCO_{3}$ is changed Aragonite from Calcite. Also in case of Quantum Stick, the amount of scale is reduced by expert inspector's result. As a whole, Magnetic treatment and Quantum Stick have the effect for protecting of scale precipitation.
