  • To develop the manufacturing technique for the powder builder of amorphous solid types, the water glass mixed with caustic soda dispersed into the methanol. Thus soluble sodium silicate was made a form of amorphous solid powder. In order to examine characteristics of water soluble sodium silicate $SiO_2/Na_2O$ mol ratio, we investigated solubility, thermogram, SEM, and BET analysis. pH buffering capacity, calcium-ion binding capacity as temperature change, and surfactant loading capacity were examined for characteristics as laundry detergent builder. $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio of soluble sodium silicate was 1.0, 2.4, 2.8, and zeolite was used in order to investigate basic characteristics of laundry detergent builder. Silicate used with laundry detergent was good for pH buffering capacity and solubility. But calcium-ion binding capacity and surfactant adsorption ability were lower. $SiO_2/Na_2O$ mol ratio became higher, pH buffering capacity and ion exchange ability were lower and surfactant adsorption ability was a little higher.

  • From leaching of Korean native halloysite with hot sulfuric acid, active species of siliceous aluminosilicate are obtained as residue, which gives the mole ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 10 and substantially removes most acid-soluble impurities. By dissolving the residue in sodium hydroxide at an ambient temperature sodium silicate solution is prepared, this is used for zeolite synthesis as one of starting materials. In order to prepare zeolite Type 4A thereform, addition of a proper aluminum source is made so that the composition of the reactant materials may be of the following mole ratios : Na2O/SiO2=1.2-1.5, SiO2/Al2O3=1.8-2.0 and H2O/Na2O=34-45 By careful control of ageing time and temperature, subsequent crystal growth is induced into microfine zeolite 4A, which gives optimum particle size distributjion being suitable for detergent builder. The zeolite products thus obtained and highly competitive with those from the use of the refined clay in comparison of their calcium exchange capacity, whiteness and particle size distribution. The present method shows a marginal advantage over the existing procedures requiring neitherseparate purification nor calcinating otherwise necessary for the raw clay ores in use.

  • A study was made of the effect of zeolite in detergent on the removal of soils correlating the characteristics of soil components. The detergency of natural soil was increased with increasing zeolite concentration but the effect on detergency was inferior to STPP. In case of carbon black based artificial soils. The detergency of soil containning non-polar oily soil was not improved by zeolite but the detergancy was increased with increasing zeolite concentration when polar oily soils were added to the soil. In case of iron black based artificial soils. Though the detergency was better than that of carbon black based soils, the detergency was not improved by zeolite regardless of oily soil components. The effect of zeolite on removal of oily soil was studied with tripalmitin and palmitic acid as model soils. The effect of zeolite and STPP on the removal of tripalmitin, the detergency was increased with in creasing STPP concentration but not zeolite.

  • A study on the synthesis of zeolite 4A using the bituminous coal fly ash from power plant was carried out. This study aims to investigate possibility for detergent builder with synthesized zeolite. It was examined at the crystallization conditions of atmospheric pressure and that of pressurization. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be Zeolite 4A type by means of the XRD and SEM analysis, and then the synthesized zeolite was used as an absorbent the remove the $Ca^{2+}$ ions in the water. In this study, commercial zeolite and synthesized zeolite reached equilibrium within 10 and 30 minutes respectively. The amount of $Ca^{2+}$ ions exchanged by the commercial zeolite, atmospheric pressure zeolite (zeolite A) and pressurized zeolite(zeolite PA) were 391mg/L(as $CaCO_3$), 323mg/L(as $CaCO_3$) and 355mg/L(as $CaCO_3$) respectively.

  • Zeolite 4A was prepared by new synthesis method, 2-step crystallization, for enhancement of oil absorption capacity. Vietnamese sand and $NaAlO_2$ solution from natural bauxite were used as raw materials in stead of conventional cullet and $Al(OH)_3$ to reduced the processing cost. Some dissolved organics in $NaAlO_2$ solution were removed by activated carbon. Synthetic method was progressed by 1) reacting the raw materials at $55^{\circ}C$, 4 hr with the ratio of Si/Al to 1.15, and 2) reacting at $65^{\circ}C$, 5 hr with reducing the ratio of Si/Al to 0.98. New method can easily control the particle size, aggregation, surface polarity, and enhanced the whiteness of the products. The prepared zeolite 4A shows excellent oil absorption capacity(O.A.C>50 ml/100 g) as well as equal value with calcium ion exchange capacity, and proves the 2-step crystallization is the economic and effective process for the preparation of zeolite 4A.

  • Synthetic zeolite was prepared by using of natural bentonite from Kampo area and the application of detergent builder was investigated. The optimum synthetic condition was SiO$_2$/Al$_2$O$_3$= 2, Na$_2$O/A1$_2$O$_3$=1, H$_2$O/A1$_2$O$_3$=30 at 90$^{\circ}C$ for 3hr and it was found by XRD analysis that the zeolite synthesized under this condition was type A. When the zeolite A synthesized under the optimum condition was contacted with 40$^{\circ}$Dh CaCl$_2$solution at 30$^{\circ}C$ for 15min, the cation exchange capacity was 264.9mg CaO/g-zeolite. And the whiteness of the sample was 89% and the mean particle size was 9.95$\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • Silicate used as laundry detergent builder was good for pH buffering capacity and solubility but calcium-ion binding capacity and surfactant adsorption ability were lower. As $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio became higher, pH buffering capacity and ion exchange ability were lower and surfactant adsorption ability was little higher. Anionic surfactant LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulphonate), nonionic surfactant LA-9 (lauryl alcohol EO-9) were used to investigate the detergency performance. Zeolite was better than sodium silicate in detergency performance. In case of LAS, detergency performance was good when $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio was lower. In case of LA-9, detergency performance was similar without discrimination of molar ratio of $SiO_2/Na_2O$.

  • Na-A zeolite were synthesized from melting slag of the incinerated ash by the alkaline activation processes. The experiments were performed in stainless steel vessels, with continuous stirring during the reaction periods. The silica-rich solution, a starting material, which was the waste of crystal growth factory, contains 5.7 wt% SiO₂ and 3.2 wt% Na₂O. And NaAlO₂ was made by the reaction of aluminium dross and NaOH solution and its molar ratios were Na₂O/Al₂O₃= 1.2 and H₂O/Na₂O=9. During the residence time of 7∼8 h at 80℃, the mixing of the silica-rich solution, NaAlO₂ and melting slag yields the production of homogeneous Na-A zeolite. The optimal reactant composition in molar ratio of Na₂O:Al₂O₃:SiO₂ was 1.3∼l.4 : 0.8∼0.9 : 2 and mixing ratio of solution and slag was 1/7∼10 (g/cc). Synthesized Na-A zeolite has cubic form uniformly and its size ranges about 1 ㎛. Ca/sup 2+/ ion exchange capacity of the Na-A was about 180∼210 meq/100g, corresponding approximately 80% to the commercial detergent builder.
