  • Current design standards do not provide adequate guidelines for the fire design of cold-formed steel compression members subject to flexural-torsional buckling. Eurocode 3 Part 1.2 (2005) recommends the same fire design guidelines for both hot-rolled and cold-formed steel compression members subject to flexural-torsional buckling although considerable behavioural differences exist between cold-formed and hot-rolled steel members. Past research has recommended the use of ambient temperature cold-formed steel design rules for the fire design of cold-formed steel compression members provided appropriately reduced mechanical properties are used at elevated temperatures. To assess the accuracy of flexural-torsional buckling design rules in both ambient temperature cold-formed steel design and fire design standards, an experimental study of slender cold-formed steel compression members was undertaken at both ambient and elevated temperatures. This paper presents the details of this experimental study, its results, and their comparison with the predictions from the current design rules. It was found that the current ambient temperature design rules are conservative while the fire design rules are overly conservative. Suitable recommendations have been made in relation to the currently available design rules for flexural-torsional buckling including methods of improvement. Most importantly, this paper has addressed the lack of experimental results for slender cold-formed steel columns at elevated temperatures.

  • This article investigates economic-statistical design of VSI(variable samling interval) charts considering Various Runs Rules. Most recent adaptive control charts are conplex designs. Actually It's not easy to operating control quality process. We propose a procedure for designing VSI Runs charts, based on Lorenzen and Vence's model. The optimal design parameters of the charts can be determined by minimizing the cost model. And computational experiments show that the VSI Runs Rules charts is superior to the FSSI Runs Rules charts in the economic-statistical characterisitics.

  • This research proposes a method for designing VSI (Variable Sampling Interval) control charts with supplementary run rules. The basic idea is to apply various run rules and the VSI scheme to a control chart in order to increase the sensitivity. The sampling process of the VSI run rules chart is constructed by Markov chain approach. A procedure for designing the VSI run rules chart is proposed based on Lorenzen and Vance's model. Sensitivity study shows that the VSI run rules charts outperform the FSI (Fixed Sampling Interval) run rules charts for wide range of process mean shifts. A major advantage of the VSI run rules chart over other charts such as CUSUM, EWMA, and adaptive charts is it's simplicity in implementation. Some useful guidelines are proposed based on the sensitivity study.

  • Fuzzy controller design consists of intuition, and any other information about how to control system, into a set of rules. These rules can then be applied to the system. If the rules adequately control the system, the design work is done well. If the rules are inadequate, the designer must modify the rules. Through this procedure, the system can be controlled. In this paper, we design fuzzy controller composed of two parts, one is balancing controller, the other is angle controller.

  • This paper expounds the development of a user-friendly expert system for the optimal stacking sequence design of composite laminates subjected to the various rules constraints. The expert system was realized in the graphic-based design environment. Therefore, users can access and use the system easily. The optimal stacking sequence is obtained by means of integration of a genetic algorithm, finite element analysis. These systems were integrated with the rules of design heuristics under an expert system shell. The optimal stacking sequence combination for the application of interest is drawn from the discrete ply angles and design rules stored in the knowledge base of the expert system. For the integration and management of softwares, a graphic-based design environment that provides multi-tasking and graphic user interface capability is built.

  • Kansei design knowledge acquisition stage is a crucial stage in kansei designing process and kansei engineering (KE) methodology. In kansei engineering methodology, it is essential to extract design knowledge or rules on relationships between customer's kansei and product design element. We attempt to construct a more powerful melted for extracting the design rules from kansei expremental data. We constucted a kansei experiment concerning color kansei evaluation, and analyzed the sane data by both conventional quantification theory type I and rough set theory. Finally, we compared the effectiveness of both methods for extracting rules and examined the extensions of rough set theory in kansei engineering.

  • International organizations and classification societies established rules and regulations to which shipbuilders and ship operators should comply during design, construction, even operation keeping from hazard to life of crews and ocean environment. Hence, rules and regulations could be guidelines for design and construction of ship sometimes. In practical wise, ship structure designers be predisposed to design lightest and easy-to-product structures which satisfy rules and regulations. Therefore, changes of rules and regulations are remarkably important issue to related industries. In 2006, IACS established and released Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carrier and Common Structural Rules for Double Hull Oil Tanker. These CSRs are consolidated and unified rules of class society's rules. But these two rules are different from each other. IACS has plan to release unified rule of two ship type called Harmonized Common Structural Rule for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers. This new rule will be effective from July 2015. Hence, bulk carrier and double hull oil tanker whose contract date is on and thereafter July 2015 should be complied with CSR-H. Therefore, it is highly important to be aware of consequences and cause of consequences with respect to CSR-H. The object of this research is to compare requirements of structure scantling in way of midship area for selected target ship according to CSRs and CSR-H and to analysis cause of deviation between two rules.

  • H-CSR(Harmonized Common Structural Rules) integrating CSR-BC(Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers) and CSR-OT(Common Structural Rules for Double Hull Oil Tankers) came into effect in July of 2015, so that bulk carrier and double hull oil tanker should comply with this rules. So far, several studies for trend analysis of requirements of structure scantling based on H-CSR have been carried out briskly. However, those studies are rare to apply H-CSR in actual structural design of ships, especially bulk carriers. In this study, an automated system for compartment arrangement is used to search the design case that minimizes still water bending moment(S.W.B.M) in 38k bulk carrier designed by Far East Ship Design & Engineering Co. Ltd. Also, various structural design cases are considered by changing arrangement of structural members to reduce ship weight. The SeaTrust-Hullscan software developed by Korean Register is used to perform structural design of ships based on mother ship and proper design cases are selected by user. The DSA(Direct Strength Analysis) is performed to evaluate structural safety for the yielding and buckling analysis by using MSC Nastran software. The effect of weight reduction is verified by comparison of ship weight between mother ship and the selected design cases.

  • The slamming impact pressures at the bottom area of the Open60' are evaluated by the rules and regulations of various organizations - ISO and classification societies. The enhanced performance of the modern racing yacht in terms of speed which achieves well over 20 knots needs special consideration. The calculated design impact pressures are compared a experimental results. Severe difference can be found in these calculation results but the final conclusion shall be obtained after the scantling calculation under the evaluated design impact pressure so far.

  • In clinical trials, it is important to have well designed case report forms (CRF) in order to obtain good quality of data. If CRF design at the first stage of your study goes wrong, after all efforts have been made, you may find practical difficulties in data analysis at the final stage of your study because of incomplete or wrong information. In this paper, the following rules fundamental to CRF design are introduced: rules in general, rules of format or style, categorized responses, forms with multiple records per subject, and international studies. Investigators are well aware of research goals, however sometimes they do not know how to express it on CRF. If they understand the rules fundamental to CRF design, time for CRF development will be saved and CRF completeness will be enhanced.
