A Development Environment for Embedded Software

  • In recent years, embedded systems have become so complex and the development time to market is required to be shorter than before. As embedded systems include more functions for new services, embedded software gradually grow in size, and development costs and time are increasing. In order to overcome this serious matter, we need a customized design and test technique for embedded software. In this paper, we present a software architecture style for embedded software. It facilitates the composition of reusable functions and helps developers to reduce development time. Because the costs associated with revealing errors of embedded software in applications are rising. we propose a test method and tools for target environments.

  • This letter presents an approximation of the outage probability of the pilot channel that can be used for CDMA cell planning. The approximation can determine system parameters for soft handover in IS-95-based cellular CDMA downlink design. Computer simulations show that our analytical results agree with empirical results.

  • There have been increased interests in information visualization. Information visualization has been considered as a way to summarize textual data so that the users can access large amount of data more efficiently and effectively. However, many information visualization techniques stem from scientific visualization techniques, which might be difficult for the regular users to understand. More importantly, the system models used by most of the information visualization techniques do not have real world counterpart. For example, most of the users do not represent or process the textual data in terms of fisheye view or a topological map. This means that there is no affordance on the current information visualization systems from the users point of view. In this paper, we analyzed this problem by using the user interface design principles to point out what lacks in the current information visualization systems. More specifically, we have applied Nielson's Heuristic Evaluation technique to review four representative information visualization techniques. The analysis results confirmed our original hypothesis on why the current information visualization systems are not part of the mainstream information systems. Finally, we suggested to invest more efforts in improving the currently prevalent and familiar bullet list type textual information presentation method based on the usability studies and the intelligent content analysis.

Finding a Needle in a Haystack: Homophily, Communication Structure, and Information Search in an Online User Community

  • A growing body of research explores how users of online communities navigate through large-scale platforms to find the information they seek. This study builds on the theories of homophily, structural embeddedness, and social exchange to investigate how interest homophily and existing communication structures serve as mechanisms driving information searches and the subsequent formation of communication networks in these communities. Specifically, we analyze comment-on-post tie formation using network data from "Today's House," the largest online user community specializing in interior design in Korea. Employing the LR-QAP method, a permutation-based hypothesis testing algorithm for social network data, our research identifies that network tie formation is driven by both homophilous information searches based on instrumental and hedonic interests, as well as by structurally induced searches such as preferential attachment, reciprocity, and transitivity. In addition, we investigate the contingent effects of communication structure on homophilous tie formation. Our findings suggest that while network-wide structural characteristics enhance homophilous tie formation based on instrumental interests, local network processes leverage homophily based on hedonic interests. We conclude by discussing the theoretical implications of the differential influence of participation motivations on information search patterns and the practical implications for the design of online communities.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to deduct the factors for explaining the economic behavior of an Internet user who provides personal information notwithstanding the concern about an invasion of privacy based on the Information Privacy Calculus Theory and Communication Privacy Management Theory. Design/methodology/approach This study made a design of the research model by integrating the factors deducted from the computation theory of information privacy with the factors deducted from the management theory of communication privacy on the basis of the Dual-Process Theory. In addition, this study, did empirical analysis of the path difference between groups by dividing Internet users into a group having experience in personal information spill and another group having no experience. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, this study confirmed that the Privacy Concern about forms through the Perceived Privacy Risk derived from the Disposition to value Privacy. In addition, this study confirmed that the behavior of an Internet user involved in personal information offering occurs due to the Perceived Benefits contradicting the Privacy Concern.

  • In general, users of design software such as Photoshop, search for information online when they want to obtain related knowledge. However, it is very difficult to find the exact information they want about designs because available knowledge sharing systems are very broad in what they manage, and it is rare that such systems would provide any design-specific Q&A or exchange of information functionality. In the paper we development a video based system for sharing design knowledge that supplies Q&A, lecture, knowledge trade function etc. utilizing multimedia like text, image and video reflecting the characteristics of design knowledge. The system are expected to contribute to the competitiveness of products through sharing design knowledge. In the near future the system will need to expand to a framework that can be shared with a variety of knowledge, as well as design knowledge.

  • In this paper, we design and implement an agent-based mask dance guidance system which provides multimedia information on traditional masques through WWW. When the server receives a query from the client, it produces the multimedia data by connecting several real full-motion videos, and synthesizing adequate voice data for guiding announcement. To develop an agent-based guidance system, we designed and implemented four agents such as interface agent, user modeling agent coordinator agent and data management agent. The mask dance guidance system also provides the functions of searching using the keyword and learning.

Synthesis of Deadlock-Free Ladder Diagrams for PLCs Based on Deadlock Detection and.Recovery (DDR) Algorithm (DDR 알고리즘에 기반한 교착상태배제 래더 다이어그램 설계)

  • In general, a deadlock in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) is caused by a resource limitation and the diversity of routings. However, the deadlock of industrial controllers such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) can occur from different causes compared with those in general FMSs. The deadlock of PLCs is usually caused by an error signal between PLCs and manufacturing systems. In this paper, we propose a deadlock detection and recovery (DDR) algorithm to resolve the deadlock problem of PLCs at design stage. This paper employs the MAPN (modified automation Petri net), MTPL (modified token passing logic), and ECC (efficient code conversion) algorithm to model manufacturing systems and to convert a Petri net model into a desired LD (ladder diagram). Finally, an example of manufacturing systems is provided to illustrate the proposed DDR algorithm.

A Study on Construction of Design Environment and Design Automation Using 3D CAD System (3차원 CAD 시스템을 이용한 설계환경 구축 및 설계자동화에 대한 연구)

  • In order to survive worldwide competition, today's industries are experiencing strong pressure to introduce higher quality products with lower cost and shorter lead-time. Therefore, the role of design in the process of product development is increasing in significance. In this research, two methods for improving the design capability are proposed: construction of design environment and design automation using 3D CAD system. The designers and design process are the core of product design using 3D CAD system. In order to maximize the design performance, construction of the design environment including selection of a suitable system, designer training for best use of the system, establishment of an efficient design process, and stabilization of the environment are required. A method is suggested to construct design environment by systematizing the contents of the projects and consulting experiences carried out for various categories of business such as electronic devices, motorcycles, electricity parts, sanitary wares, injection molds, and die casing molds. Design automation helps reduce tedious and time-consuming jobs, simplify complicated and error-prone modeling and drawing works to shorten the lead time and improve the product quality. To develop a design automation system, understanding the process and the related knowledge on design are very important before implementing the system using API provided by 3D CAD system. In this research, an eight-step procedure is proposed for the development of a design automation system. These eight steps are analysis of needs, determination of specification, verification of specification using 3D CAD system, inspection of related API functions, programming, field test, application in practice, and maintenance. A case study in which five design automation systems in the design of turbine generators using the proposed method is introduced in detail. These systems play important roles in the generation of various output items including 3D models, drafts, material information, and NC data. The case study shows how effectively the design time is reduced and the quality improved using those systems.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation techniques of a generic Internet-based telerobotic system. The purpose is to make available the precious technical information and hands-on experience of the authors for the research community. The paper is based on the telerobotics system that the authors recently implemented between KAIST, Korea and Saga University, Japan. In its current functionality, two control modes: high-level supervisory control and low-level supervisory control are explored demonstrating their merits and demerits.
