Design parameters and goals play important roles in design. Design goals are the required functions of the design elements and explicitly expressed by design parameters. Design parameters also indicate the relations among design elements, by which constraint networks can be constructed and some useful information can be induced. In this study, the mechanical design process is assumed to be the assignment of design goals and their realization through the evolutionary refinement of the design parameters. Thus an integrated design system is proposed to support the process of assigning the design goals and refining the values of the design parameters. In the design system, a genetic engine that utilizes a genetic algorithm is installed to simulate an iterative design process, which leads to an evolutionary design. The genetic engine treats design parameters as genes and design goals as evaluation function. Re-design and design modification are facilitated by the design parameters. The re-design can be activated in the design system by using the information stored in the design parameters when design parameters or goals are changed.
Consumers can have impression goals as well as defense goals. Those with impression goals could use social goals or opinions of others in a social context to determine their attitudes, and those with defense goals could maintain their existing attitudes and beliefs. Since people typically approach pleasure and avoid pain, there are two kinds of goal orientations depending on regulatory focus theory. Therefore, marketers could design advertisements for their products on the basis of two types of focus, promotion-focused and prevention-focused advertisements. This study aims to explore how consumers with different consumption goals evaluate an advertised product. The results of this study demonstrate that consumers with impression goals felt much more "right" about the product in a promotion-focused, rather than prevention-focused, advertisement, and those with defense goals, felt much more "right" about the product in a prevention-focused advertisement. Consumers with impression goals evaluated the product in the promotion-focused advertisement more favorably than in the prevention-focused advertisement, and those with defense goals evaluated the product in the prevention-focused advertisement more favorably.
Purpose - Previous studies have not paid attention to pride type and effort type when consumers feel pride. In the present paper, the pride was divided into the two types such as hubristic pride and authentic pride. The causes attributed to achieve the goals when consumers achieved their personal goals, which could induce their pride were divided into trait, special effort, and universal effort, gratitude. This research attempted to investigate the mediation role of self-reward deservingness in finding the differences of inclination to indulgent consumption among the traits or special effort, the universal effort, and other's help. Research design, data, and methodology - In the empirical study, 'general flour food restaurants, Kimbabchunkuk, Edya, etc.' and 'VIPS, Outback, Starbucks, etc.' were taken as the two groups of subjects as empirical brand goods since they presented good contrast with each other. The single-factor design between subjects was adopted in this study by classifying the causes attributable to achieving the pre-goals of consumers into 4 categories: one attributable to trait; one attributable to special effort; one attributable to universal effort; one attributable to other's help. Results - The outcomes from the empirical analysis are as followings. First, the consumers who attributed to trait or special effort for achieving their personal goals in advance turned out to show stronger inclination toward direct indulgent consumption than those who attributed to universal effort or other's help for achieving the goals, without regard to self-reward deservingness. Second, those consumers who attributed to special effort for achieving their personal goals in advance revealed stronger inclination toward indulgent consumption with mediation of self-reward deservingness than those who attributed to trait or universal effort. And those who attributed to special effort or trait for achieving the goals revealed stronger inclination toward the consumption with the mediation of the deservingness than those who attributed to other's help. Conclusions - The present study is contributing to the progress of theories concerning hubris pride, authentic pride, and indulgent consumption. Marketing managers should endeavor to find pride type consumers felt according the causes attributed to for achieving important goals in advance, and make an efforts to develop messages that could appeal to the pride type.

In this paper, the optimization has been performed to design a multi-layer structure that is used as a structure for noise reduction of acoustic sonar sensors in underwater vehicles. Two design goals are considered to reduce self-noise from own machineries and to enhance acoustic signals detected from outside. Both distinct and continuous design parameters have been used such as selection of material properties of each layer and thickness of each layer, respectively. The sensitivity of design parameters has been analyzed and the evolutionary algorithm has been implemented for design optimization. For design optimization process, each of the design goals and the two combined design goals have been considered to analyze the achievement of those design goals.
This study explored the consistency in service-learning courses through comparing course syllabi and faculty survey in order to incorporate a service-learning course into the Home Economics practicum. The first step was to examine how consistent were between the reasons for choice of service-learning and importance of overall civic learning goals, between the importance of civic learning goals and educational objectives on syllabus, and between planned activities and accomplished activities. This study collected the descriptive and quantitative data from the syllabi for service-learning courses and a faculty survey at Texas Tech University. The major findings were that there was meaningful consistency between: the reasons for choosing service-learning and the importance of overall civic learning goals, the importance of civic learning goals and educational objectives, and planned activities on syllabus assignment and accomplished activities on the faculty survey related to course components. Future research regarding service-learning course design would be required in detail, and practice in designing service-learning courses would be consistent between the syllabus and performance in actual courses.
Purpose - This study focuses on the use of evaluative criteria software for imprecise market information, and product mapping relationships between design parameters and customer requirements. Research design, data, and methodology - This study involved using the product predicted value method, synthesizing design alternatives through a morphological analysis and plan, realizing the synthesis in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), and using its searching software capacity to obtain optimal solutions. Results - The establishment of product designs conforms to the customer demand, and promotes the optimization of several designs. In this study, the construction level analytic method and the simple multi attribute comment, or the quantity analytic method are used. Conclusions - This study provides a solution for enterprise products' multi-goals decision-making, because the product design lacks determinism, complexity, risk, conflict, and so on. In addition, the changeable factor renders the entire decision-making process more difficult. It uses Fuzzy deduction and the correlation technology for appraising the feasible method and multi-goals decision-making, to solve situations of the products' multi-goals and limited resources, and assigns resources for the best product design.

We present an approach to high-level synthesis for a specific target architecture-partitioned bus architecture. In this approach, we have specific goals of minimizing data transfer length and number of buses in addition to common synthesis goals such as minimizing number of control steps and satisfying given resource constraint. Minimizing data transfer length and number of buses can be very important design goals in the era of deep submicron technology in which interconnection delay and area dominate total delay and area of the chip to be designed. in partitioned bus architecture, to get optimal solution satisfying all the goals, partitioning of operation nodes among segments and ordering of segments as well as scheduling and allocation/binding must be considered concurrently. Those additional goals may impose much more complexity on the existing high-level synthesis problem. To cope with this increased complexity and get reasonable results, we have employed two ideas in ur synthesis approach-extension of the target architecture to alleviate bus requirement for data transfer and adoption of genetic algorithm as a principal methodology for design space exploration. Experimental results show that our approach is a promising high-level synthesis mehtodology for partitioned bus architecture.

We present a design for personalisation of a chording keyboard. There are two primary design goals. Firstly, the keyboard layout should be easy to learn, and easy to use, taking into account the background and physical constraints of the user. Secondly, the keyboard layout should be readily extensible, based on the previous behaviour of the keyboard user. The design proposal accomplishes these goals, and can be simply implemented on cost-effective hardware. In addition, we present preliminary experimental results on optimising the initial keyboard layout.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of online ballet community-based teacher-parent computer-mediated communication (CMC) on four achievement goals of ballet students. We used a randomized post-test only control group design. In order to test whether teacher-parent CMC has a positive impact on the improvement of achievement goals, multivariate analysis of covariance were performed with the ages of ballet students as the covariates. Teacher-parent CMC had significant effects on achievement goals. The mastery-approach goals of the experimental group were significantly higher than of the control group. In contrast, the performance-avoidance goals of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group. There were no differences between the two groups in mastery-avoidance and performance-approach goals. Above all, this study is significant because the focus was placed on the inter-relationship between the two settings of school and family in regard to ballet student improvement, rather than on one setting only.

An optimal design method for hybrid structural control system of building structures subject to earthquake excitation is presented in this paper. Designing a hybrid structural control system may be defined as a process that optimizes the capacities and configuration of passive and active control systems as well as structural members. The optimal design proceeds by formulating the optimization problem via a multi-stage goal programming technique and, then, by finding reasonable solution to the optimization problem by means of a goal-updating genetic algorithm. In the multi-stage goal programming, design targets(or goals) are at first selected too correspond too several stages and the objective function is th n defined as the sum of the normalized distances between these design goals and each of the physical values, that is, the inter-story drifts and the capacities of the control system. Finally, the goal-updating genetic algorithm searches for optimal solutions satisfying each stage of design goals and, if a solution exists, the levels of design goals are consecutively updated to approach the global optimal solution closest too the higher level of desired goals. The process of the integrated optimization design is illustrated by a numerical simulation of a nine-story building structure subject to earthquake excitation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing the optimally designed results with those of a hybrid structural control system where structural members, passive and active control systems are uniformly distributed.
