Optimal Treatment of Unconstrained Visco-elastic Damping Layer on Beam to Minimize Vibration Responses (진동응답을 최소화하는 비구속형 제진보의 제진 부위 최적설계)

  • An optimization formulation of unconstrained damping treatment on beam is proposed to minimize vibration responses using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model is combined with RUK's equivalent stiffness approach in order to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus of damping materials with frequency and temperature. Vibration responses are calculated by using the modal superposition principle, and of which design sensitivity formula with respect to damping layout is derived analytically. Plugging the sensitivity formula into optimization software, we can determine optimally damping treatment region that gives minimum forced response under a given boundary condition. A numerical example shows that the proposed method is very effective in suppressing nitration responses by means of unconstrained damping layer treatment.

A Characteristic Analysis on the Elastic Stiffness of the Tapered-width Leaf Type Holddown Spring Assembly Designed in KOFA's Design Space

  • An elastic stiffness formula of a leaf type holddown spring(HDS) assembly with a uniformly tapered width from $w_0$ to $w_14$ over the length, has been analytically derived based on Euler beam theory and Castigliano's theorem. Elastic stiffnesses of the tapered-width leaf type HDSs(TW-HDSs) designed in the same dimensional design spaces as the KOFA HDSs have been evaluated from the derived formula, in addition, a parametric study on the elastic stiffness of the TW-HDSs has been carried out. Analysis results show that, as the effects of axial and shear force on the elastic stiffness of He TW-HDSs have been 0.15~0.21% of the elastic stiffness, most of the elastic stiffness is attributed to the bending moment, and that elastic stiffnesses of the TW-HDSs have been about 32~33% higher than those of the KOFA HDSs. It is found that the number of leaves composing a HDS assembly could be lessened by one under the conditions that the TW-HDSs have been adopted in KOFA.

  • The extent of slack is correlative with the wheelbase of vehicle as well as the distance between the inner faces of flanges. Since the movable clearance of wheel flange is getting reduced in curved track, the vehicle is more difficult to negotiate the track. By this reason, a certain extent of slack is normally designed for curved track to allow the movable clearance corresponding to that of straight track. In case of some foreign railways,. the fixed extent of slack has been classified by the ranges of curve radius. In case of KNR, the slack is calculated by a formula for each case of curve radius and it therefore seems quite precise method. However, since there is a wide range of slack adjustment $(S'=0\~15mm)$ in calculation formula itself, too excessive or too little slack can be calculated. This study is to approach the technical review on slack calculation and to offer the reasonable slack design through the full-scale experiment at sharp curved track without slack.

Estimation of the Elastic Stiffness of TW-HDS Assembly (너비감소 판형 홀다운스프링 집합체의 탄성강성도 평가)

  • A formula for estimating the elastic stiffness of TW-HDS with a uniformly tapered width from w$_{0}$ to w$_{1}$ over the length, has been analytically derived based on Euler beam theory and Castigliano's theorem.   • A general procedure for the design sensitivity analysis of structural dynamic problems has been presented in frame of the FRF-based substructuring formulation. For a system response function, the proposed method gives a parametric design sensitivity formula in terms of the partial derivatives of the connection element properties and the transfer matrix of the subsystems. The derived design sensitivity formula is applied to an engine mount system. An interior noise problem in the passenger car is analyzed using the FRF-based substructuring method and the proposed formulation is adopted to study the response variations with respect to the dynamic characteristics of the engine mounts and the bushes. To obtain the FRFs, a finite element model is built for the engine mount structures, and test data is used for the trimmed body including cabin cavity. The comparison of sensitivities derived by the proposed method and the finite difference method shows that the proposed method is efficient and accurate. The proposed sensitivity analysis method indicates effectively the most sensitive location to the interior noise among the engine mounts and the bushes.

  • An efficient boundary-based technique is developed for addressing shape design sensitivity analysis in supercavitating flow problem. An analytical sensitivity formula in the form of a boundary integral is derived based on the continuum formulation for a general functional defined in potential flow problems. The formula, which is expressed in terms of the boundary solutions and shape variation vectors, can be conveniently used for gradient computation in a variety of shape design in potential flow problems. While the sensitivity can be calculated independent of the analysis means, such as the finite element method (FEM) or the boundary element method (BEM), the FEM is used for the analysis in this study because of its popularity and easy-to-use features. The advantage of using a boundary-based method is that the shape variation vectors are needed only on the boundary, not over the whole domain. The boundary shape variation vectors are conveniently computed by using finite perturbations of the shape geometry instead of complex analytical differentiation of the geometry functions. The supercavitating flow problem is chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology. Implementation issues for the sensitivity analysis and optimization procedure are also addressed in this flow problem.

Predictions of curvature ductility factor of doubly reinforced concrete beams with high strength materials

  • The high strength materials have been more widely used in reinforced concrete structures because of the benefits of the mechanical and durable properties. Generally, it is known that the ductility decreases with an increase in the strength of the materials. In the design of a reinforced concrete beam, both the flexural strength and ductility need to be considered. Especially, when a reinforced concrete structure may be subjected an earthquake, the members need to have a sufficient ductility. So, each design code has specified to provide a consistent level of minimum flexural ductility in seismic design of concrete structures. Therefore, it is necessary to assess accurately the ductility of the beam sections with high strength materials in order to ensure the ductility requirement in design. In this study, the effects of concrete strength, yield strength of reinforcement steel and amount of reinforcement including compression reinforcement on the complete moment-curvature behavior and the curvature ductility factor of doubly reinforcement concrete beam sections have been evaluated and a newly prediction formula for curvature ductility factor of doubly RC beam sections has been developed considering the stress of compression reinforcement at ultimate state. Based on the numerical analysis results, the proposed predictions for the curvature ductility factor are verified by comparisons with other prediction formulas. The proposed formula offers fairly accurate and consistent predictions for curvature ductility factor of doubly reinforced concrete beam sections.

Safety analysis and design of full balanced hoist vertical shiplifts

  • The safety relating to leakage of water and pitch instability of ship chambers of the full balanced hoist vertical shiplifts has been the focus of adoption of the type of vertical shiplifts. This paper aims to remove the doubts through theoretical and engineering researches. The leakage and pitch stability of ship chambers of full balanced hoist vertical ship lifts are investigated on the basis of theoretical analysis and exploration of engineering measures. Regarding the issue of leakage of ship chambers, a mathematical model on leaking process is built and corresponding formula and coping measures are obtained which can be applied in control program of ship lifts by linking with monitoring. The concept of safety grade is put forward to seek the best technical and economic index and the corresponding technical measures are for different grades of ship lift is suggested. For the issue of pitch instability, a methodology of combining theoretical deduction and summary of achievements of design and operation of the type of the full balanced hoist shiplifts is adopted, and the formula for design about pitch stability of ship chambers is derived.

Shape Design Sensitivity Analysis for Interface Problem in Axisymmetric Elasticity

  • A boundary integral equation method in the shape design sensitivity analysis is developed for the elasticity problems with axisymmetric non-homogeneous bodies. Functionals involving displacements and tractions at the zonal interface are considered. Sensitivity formula in terms of the interface shape variation is then derived by taking derivative of the boundary integral identity. Adjoint problem is defined such that displacement and traction discontinuity is imposed at the interface. Analytic example for a compound cylinder is taken to show the validity of the derived sensitivity formula. In the numerical implementation, solutions at the interface for the primal and adjoint system are used for the sensitivity. While the BEM is a natural tool for the solution, more generalization should be made since it should handle the jump conditions at the interface. Accuracy of the sensitivity is evaluated numerically by the same compound cylinder problem. The endosseous implant-bone interface problem is considered next as a practical application, in which the stress value is of great importance for successful osseointegration at the interface. As a preliminary step, a simple model with tapered cylinder is considered in this paper. Numerical accuracy is shown to be excellent which promises that the method can be used as an efficient and reliable tool in the optimization procedure for the implant design. Though only the axisymmetric problem is considered here, the method can be applied to general elasticity problems having interface.
