In this study, optimal design methods were applied to the agent discharge flow of clean agent fire extinguishing systems. The methods combined optimal design theory and engineering theory for engineering analysis in a design program or coast savings in value engineering. Optimal design parameters were determined to optimize the agent discharge flow based on the design theory of the clean agent fire extinguishing systems and the theory of optimal design. The design factors were verified in regard to suitability for the performance of fire extinguishing systems. The results provide a foundation for optimal design method methods in other fire extinguishing systems. Optimization of the agent discharge flow of the discharge nozzle was confirmed by the constraints on the inner diameter of the discharge nozzle and the pipe, agent arrival time, flow, and pressure variation of the agent. The deviation of discharge pressure and agent time of the agent discharge nozzle were found to correlate with the pressure variation.
To estimate the sediment discharge controlled by sediment-filled check-dam and thereby enhancing factor for check-dam design and dredging criteria, we surveyed slope failures and stream-bed fluctuation caused by geomorphic disturbances (i.e., landslides and debris flows) in Inje, Gangwondo. In general, check-dams play roles for restraining and controlling sediment discharge within a section under the design equilibrium gradient and a section under the design flood gradient, respectively. The results in this study showed same pattern: that is, the closed type check-dam, which has a design restraint sediment discharge of $2,111m^3$, estimated to control a sediment discharge of $3,996m^3$ in the stream section within 250 m right upper area immediately after the disturbances occurred in 2006. As a result, a design control sediment discharge of the check-dam was larger than its design restraint sediment discharge. This represents that the check-dam is still having an own function for controlling sediment discharge although it exceeded the designed capacity by the sediment discharged from upstream during the disturbances. Our finding suggests that the sediment discharge controlling of check-dam may need to be evaluated separately from its sediment discharge restraint. Currently, the country, however, does not consider the design control (or restraint) sediment discharges, based on the actual field survey, as criteria for check-dam design and/or dredging work. Therefore, the accumulation of the quantitative data is required to support that check-dam has functions for both restraining and controlling sediment discharge. This would be a way to develop our erosion control technology to the scientific technology equipped with a more objective and systematic aspects.
This paper describes the efficient design, analysis method and experimental verification of capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer system. A capacitor discharge magnetizer system is used to produce a high current impulse of short duration in this magnetizing fixture. The parasitic resistance and parasitic inductance of the capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer system have been estimated using known air-core test coil. Finite element analysis (using MAXWELL 2-D field simulator) and magnetizing circuit analysis (using SPICE) are also used as part of the design and analysis process of the capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer system. Application study for a magnetizing fixture design is shown. 8-pole magnetizing fixture has been designed and analyzed using finite element analysis. The fixture design for 8-pole magnet are presented along with the experimental results. The experimental results have been achieved using a high-voltage, high-energy capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer and 8-pole iron core fixtures (charging voltage : 2000[V], capacitor bank : 4000[$\mu\textrm{F}$]).
In this paper the design of the discharge cleaning system for KSTAR vacuum vessel is described. We first discuss about the parameters which are related the efficiency of discharge cleaning. The RG(RF-assisted Glow) discharge which has the ignition and sustain pressure lower than those in the case of DC discharge, thus has the higher efficiency of discharge cleaning. So we adopt the RG discharge, in practical design, for KSTAR discharge cleaning system. For uniformity of the cleaning effect, we plan to install two discharge cleaning systems in A- and I-port of the KSTAR vacuum vessel. The designed system will be adapted for the study of the fuel recycling and of the boronization as well as the discharge cleaning of the KSTAR vacuum vessel.

This study reviews the discharge coefficient for thermal buoyancy natural ventilation through experimentation. We measure the air velocity at the outlet, which is needed to derive the discharge coefficient and to compare with the theoretical value. When a temperature difference exists between the inside and outside of the building, the measured discharge coefficient differs from the theoretical value with a maximum difference of 12%. The size and position of the openings have little effect on the discharge coefficient. For practical application, the theoretical discharge coefficient can be used with little modification.
In this study, We proposed a method to estimate the design flood by area ratio in an ungauged basin. For that, the discharge parameters was determined by calibration of observed data at the watershed outlet and then peak flow was estimated by area ratio. In order to verify suggested method, peak flow was compared the observed discharge of the small river basin and the design flood discharge of river implementation projects. The results were summarized as follows. As a result of comparing the discharge by the area ratio and observed discharge, the difference of peak flows were analysed 14 ~ 25%. When the discharge calculated with area ratio of small river was compared with the design flood discharge of river implementation projects, the relative error was analyzed to be less than 20%. It means that suggested method in this study is appropriate.

This paper presents a method for determining machining parameters in electrical discharge machining process (EDM) based on discharge area. The parameters are the peak value of currents, the pulse-on time, and the pulse-off time, on which the EDM performance depends chiefly. The optimal machining parameters are closely related on discharge area, which can be calculated from a tool electrode and a discharge height. In the paper the discharge area is obtained from NC code for machining the tool electrode instead of its geometric model. The method consists of following three steps. First a Z-Map model is constructed from the NC code. Secondly, the discharge area is obtained from the Z-Map model and a Z-height. Finally, the machining parameters are calculated from the discharge area. An introduced example shows that the machining parameters are calculated by the using a Z-map model obtained from the machining data for a tool electrode.

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is caused by rainfall moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away various pollutants from NPS. The discharge pattern of NPS pollutant loads is affected by the distribution of the rainfall during the year. This study analysed relationship between the rainfall event and the stream flow rate, and estimated the rainfall discharge ratio on the specific design flow which can be used as nonpoint discharge coefficient for the estimation of NPS pollution load. It is considered that nonpoint discharge coefficient can be effectively used for the calculation of NPS pollution load at the time of water quality modelling for the management of Total maximum daily load (TMDL).

The technology of electrical discharge tap machining may be appropriate for making thread out of highly brittle material. Especially, it is very difficult to machine tap with the traditional method if the brittle material has been hardened by quenching. In this study, the shape of electrical discharge blind hole tap machining was analyzed by discharge time, discharge current, and the flushing hole condition after quenched the tool steel of STD11 has discharged the tap shape with a screw-shaped copper(Cu) electrode. An experimental design was planned and analyzed by Taguchi robust experimental design. The result showed that the shape of the blind hole discharge tap was influenced by the flushing hole, discharge time, and discharge current. The most important factor of the processing conditions was found to be the discharge current. When blind hole EDM with a copper electrode with a flushing hole was conducted, the discharged shape was found to be smooth and the angle of the discharged tapped thread was also found to be close to the thread angle of $60^{\circ}$. As the values of discharge time and discharge current increased, the EDMed surface coarsened due to the increase of the single discharge energy and the shape of the thread collapsing.

In the design of an RF discharge system, the electrical equivalence of the gas discharge must be known. With this knowledge, one can design a suitable matching network for a maximum power transfer from the RF generator into the discharge. For this purpose, an experiment has been conducted in which the electrical impedance (conductance and capacitance) was determined as a function of power. In parallel with this, a detailed theoretical analysis has been done and the results are in accord with those of our experiment. Design equations are also given for a simple matching network, and a design example is presented to demonstrate its application. During the actual operation of an RF discharge system, however, it has been often observed that the reflected power tends to vary in small values due to the changes in the impedance of the system. This problem can be relieved by adding an automatic impedance matching circuit to the system and this paper presents such an automatic impedance matching network.
