  • Recently, the observational design and construction method in tunnels has been becoming important. Rock masses include various discontinuities such as joints, faults, fractures, bedding planes, and, cracks. The behavior of tunnels in hard rocks, therefore, is generally controlled by various discontinuities. In this study, a new key block analysis method for observational design and construction method in tunnels is proposed, and then applied to the actual tunnel with a super-large cross-section. The proposed analysis method considers finite persistence of discontinuities. The new analysis method can handle concave and convex shaped blocks. To demonstrate the applicability of this key block analysis method for observational design and construction method in tunnels, the analysis results are examined and compared with those of the conventional method.

  • In the practical design, it is important to extract the design space information of a complex system in order to optimize the design because the design contains huge amount of design conflicts in general. In this research FEA (finite element analysis) has been successfully implemented and integrated with a statistical approach such as DOE (design of experiments) based RSM (response surface model) to optimize the thermal deformation of an automotive disk brake. The DOE is used for exploring the engineer's design space and for building the RSM in order to facilitate the effective solution of multi-objective optimization problems. The RSM is utilized as an efficient means to rapidly model the trade-off among many conflicting goals existed in the FEA applications. To reduce the computational burden associated with the FEA, the second-order regression models are generated to derive the objective functions and constraints. In this approach, the multiple objective functions and constraints represented by RSM are solved using the sequential quadratic programming to archive the optimal design of disk brake.

  • In the prototype stage of a car developing program, the efficiency of trouble shooting is an important factor to be considered. Structural modifications by the design sensitivity analysis are applied to a steering wheel system for improving the idle vibration of the prototype passenger car. For the design sensitivity analysis, the experimental modal analysis for the steering system attached to a body-in-white is fulfilled and the modal parameters extracted from the experimental data are used to predict the effect of structural modification, The design sensitivity results rank the locations to be reinforced in terms of frequency variation. The modification of steering system according to the sensitivity analysis results shifted the resonant frequency of the system effectively. In addition, the idle test of the car after the structural modifications f steering system shows that the proposed method can reduce vibration of the steering wheel efficiently.

  • Practical stability design method of main members of cable-stayed bridges is proposed and discussed through a design example. For this purpose, initial tensions of stay cables and axial forces of main members are firstly determined using initial shaping analysis of bridges under dead loads. And then the effective buckling length using system elastic/inelastic buckling analysis and bending moments considering $P-{\delta}-{\Delta}$ effect by second-order elastic analysis are calculated for main girder and pylon members subjected to both axial forces and moments, respectively. Particularly, load combinations of dead and live loads, in which maximum load effects due to live loads are obtained, are taken into account and effects of live loads on effective buckling lengths are investigated.

  • The lining segment which is the main structure of the shield tunnel consists of joints, not continua. Past international and domestic design data have been commonly used for design practices without specific verification about the structural analysis model, design load, and affection of the soil constant of the lining segment. In this study, the propriety is estimated through the comparison between analytical solution and numerical solution for segment analysis and design models of the shield tunnel which is being used internationally and domestically. As a result, the full. circumferential beam jointed spring model (1R-S0) is suggested by considering aspects of convenient use, application to field condition, and accuracy of analysis result. With suggested model, the parameter analysis was conducted for joint stiffness, ground rigidity, joint distribution, and joint number.

  • The present study is to investigate the ultimate behavior and limit state design of 2-I) R/C structures, with the changing of crack direction, and the yielding of the reinforcing steel bars, and Is to introduce an algorithm for the limit state design and analysis of 2-D R/C structures, directly from the finite element model. For the design of reinforcement in concrete the limit state design equation is incorporated into finite element algorithm to be based on the pointwise elemental ultimate behavior. It is also introduced a simplified nonlinear analysis algorithm for stress-strain relationship of R/C plane stress problem considering the cracking and its rotation in concrete and the yielding of the reinforcing steel bar. The algorithm is incorporated into the nonlinear finite element analysis. The analysis model is compared with the experimental model of R/C shear wall. In a simple design example for a shear wall, the required reinforcement ratios in each finite element is obtained from the limit state design equations.

  • In this paper, design sensivity of plate natural frequency is computed for thickness design variables. Once the variational equation is derived from Lagrange quation using the virtual displacement, governing energy bilinear form is obtained and sensivity equation is formulated through the first variation. Natural frequency is obtained using the commercial FEM code and the accuracy of sensivity is verified by finite difference. The accuracy of natural frequency and sensivity improves for the fine mesh model.

  • This study analyzed the dependence of part load performance of simple cycle gas turbines on their design performance. Various parametric calculations were carried out to examine effects of design temperature ratio, pressure ratio and component efficiencies using a simplified analysis. In addition, a more practical analysis was done for realistic design conditions with the aid of a comprehensive performance analysis program. The results show that gas turbines with higher design performance exhibit less efficiency degradation during part load operation. The influence of power control method (fuel only centre) and air flow control) on part load performance was examined as well.
