In this paper, the optimization design module for the brake system of a vehicle is developed. As using this module, design variables, that minimize an object function and satisfy nonlinear constraint conditions, can be found easily. Before an optimization is operated, Plackett-Burman design, one of the factorial design methods, is used to choose the design variables which affect a response function significantly. Using the response surface analysis, second order recursive model function, which informs a relation between design variables and response function, is estimated. In order to verify the reliability of the model function, analysis of variances(ANOVA) table is used. The value of design variables which minimize the model function and satisfy the constraint conditions is predicted through Sequential Quadratic-Programming (SQP) method. As applying the above procedure to a real vehicle simulation model and comparing the values of object functions of a current and optimized system, the optimization results are verified.

As the packing density of ICs in recent submicron IC design increases, interconnects gain importance. Because interconnects directly affect on two major components of circuit performance, power dissipation and operating speed, circuit engineers are concerned with the optimal design of interconnects and the aid tool to design them. When circuit models of interconnects are given (including geometry and material information), the analysis process for the given structure is not an easy task, but conversely, it is much more difficult to design an interconnect structure with given circuit characteristics. This paper focuses on the latter process that has not been foucsed on much till now due to the complexity of the problem, and prsents a design aid tool(DATOIS) to synthesize interconnects. this tool stroes the circuit performance parameters for normalized interconnect geometries, and has two oeprational modes:analysis mode and synthesis mode. In the analysis mode, circuit performance parameters are obtained by searching the internal database for a given geometry and interpolates results if necessary . In thesynthesis mode, when a given circuit performance parameter satisfies a set of geometry condition in the database, those geometry structures are printed out.

High temperature vacuum furnaces or high standard electric furnaces demand high technology level and high production cost. Therefore, an iterative design process and the optimization approach under integrated computing environment are required to reduce the development risk. Moreover, it also required to develop an integrated design software that can manage the centralized database system between factory and design department, and the automated furnace design and analysis. The developed software is dedicated to the development of the vacuum (electric) furnaces. Based on the distribute middleware system, the GUI module, the CAD module, the thermal analysis module and the optimization module are integrated. For the DBMS, Microsoft Access is employed, the GUI is developed using Visual Basic language, and AutoCAD is utilized for the configuration design. By investigating the analysis code interface, the analysis and optimization process, and the data communication method, the overall system architecture, the method to integrate the optimizer and ana lysis codes, and the method to manage the data flow are proposed and verified through the optimal furnace design.
Since the support structure of an offshore wind turbine has to withstand severe environmental loads such as wind, wave, and seismic loads during its entire service life, the need for a robust and reliable design increases, along with the need for a cost effective design. In addition, a robust and reliable support structure contributes to the high availability of a wind turbine and low maintenance costs. From this point of view, this paper presents a design process that includes design optimization and reliability analysis. First, the jacket structure of the NREL 5-MW offshore wind turbine is optimized to minimize the weight and stresses, while satisfying the design requirements. Second, the reliability of the optimum design is evaluated and compared with that of the initial design. Although the present study results in a new optimum shape for a jacket support structure with reduced weight and increased reliability, the authors suggest that the optimum design has to be accompanied by a reliability analysis during the design process, as well as reliability based design optimization if needed.

In the design of buildings, lateral loading is one of the most important factors considered by structural designers. The concept of performance-based design (PBD) is well developed for seismic load. Whereas, wind design is mainly based on elastic analysis for both serviceability and strength. For tall buildings subject to extreme wind load, inelastic behavior and application of the concept of PBD bear consideration. For seismic design, current practice primarily presumes inelastic behavior of the structure and that energy is dissipated by plastic deformation. However, due to analysis complexity and computational cost, calculations used to predict inelastic behavior are often performed using elastic analysis and a response modification factor (R). Inelastic analysis is optionally performed to check the accuracy of the design. In this paper, a framework for application of an R factor for wind design is proposed. Theoretical background on the application and implementation is provided. Moreover, seismic and wind fatigue issues are explained for the purpose of quantifying the modification factor R for wind design.

Linear motor has been considered to be the most suitable electric machine for linear control with high speed and high precision. Thrust of linear motor is one of the important factors to specify motor performance. Maximum thrust can be obtained by increasing the magnitude of current in conductor and is relative to the sizes of conductor and magnet. However, the magnitude of current and the size of conductor have an effect on temperature of linear motor. Therefore, it is practically important to find optimum design that can effectively maximize thrust of linear motor within limited range of temperature. Finite element analysis was applied to calculate thrust and numerical solutions were compared with experiments. The temperature of the conductor was calculated from the experimentally determined thermal resistance. The ADPL of ANSYS was used for the optimum design process, which is commercial finite element analysis software. Design variables and constraints were chosen based on manufacturing feasibility and existing products. As a result, it is shown that temperature of linear motor plays an important role in determining optimum design.
The material analysis of an offshore structure is generally conducted in the contract design phase for the price quotation of a new offshore project. This analysis is conducted manually by an engineer, which is time-consuming and can lead to inaccurate results, because the data size from previous projects is too large, and there are so many materials to consider. In this study, the piping materials in an offshore structure are analyzed for contract design using a big data framework. The big data technologies used include HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) for data saving, Hive and HBase for the database to handle the saved data, Spark and Kylin for data processing, and Zeppelin for user interface and visualization. The analyzed results show that the proposed big data framework can reduce the efforts put toward contract design in the estimation of the piping material cost.

For system maintenance optimization, it is necessary to establish a state information system by CBM+ including CBM and RCM, and sensor selection for CBM+ application requires system process for function model analysis at the early design stage. The study investigated the contents of CBM and CBM+, analyzed the function analysis tasks and procedures of the system, and thus presented a D-FMEA based sensor selection inference methodology at the early stage of design for CBM+ application, and established it as a D-FMEA based sensor selection inference process. The D-FMEA-based sensor inference methodology and procedure in the early design stage were presented for diesel engine sub assembly.
Two cases of design are performed for the hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell (Lin-Scordelis saddle shell) and the hyperbolic cooling tower (Grand Gulf cooling tower) to check the design strength against a consistent design load, therefore to verify the adequacy of the design algorithm. An iterative numerical computational algorithm is developed for combined membrane and flexural forces, which is based on equilibrium consideration for the limit state of reinforcement and cracked concrete. The design algorithm is implemented in a finite element analysis computer program developed by Mahmoud and Gupta. The amount of reinforcement is then determined at the center of each element by an elastic finite element analysis with the design ultimate load. Based on ultimate nonlinear analyses performed with designed saddle shell, the analytically calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 7% to 34% for analyses with various magnitude of tension stiffening. For the cooling tower problem the calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 26% to 63% with similar types of analyses. Since the effective tension stiffening would vary over the life of the shells due to environmental factors, a degree of uncertainty seems inevitable in calculating the actual failure load by means of numerical analysis. Even though the ultimate loads are strongly dependent on the tensile properties of concrete, the calculated ultimate loads are higher than the design ultimate loads for both design cases. For the cases designed, the design algorithm gives a lower bound on the design ultimate load with respect to the lower bound theorem. This shows the adequacy of the design algorithm developed, at least for the shells studied. The presented design algorithm for the combined membrane and flexural forces can be evolved as a general design method for reinforced concrete plates and shells through further studies involving the performance of multiple designs and the analyses of differing shell configurations.
Tool design is introduced in a multi-stage rectangular cup drawing process with the large aspect ratio. Finite element simulation is carried out to investigate deformation mechanisms with the initial tool design. The analysis reveals that the difference of the drawing ratio and the irregular contact condition produces non-uniform metal flow to cause wrinkling and severe extension. For remedy, the modification guideline is proposed in the design of the tool and process. Analysis results confirm that the modified tool design not only improves the quality of a deep-drawn product but also reduces the possibility of failure.
