A mechanics model is developed in this paper for concrete-filled steel CHS (circular hollow section) beam-columns. A unified theory is described where a confinement factor (${\xi}$) is introduced to describe the composite action between the steel tube and the filled concrete. The predicted load versus deformation relationship is in good agreement with test results. The theoretical model was used to investigate the influence of important parameters that determine the ultimate strength of concrete-filled steel CHS beam-columns. The parametric and experimental studies provide information for the development of formulas for the calculation of the ultimate strength of the composite beam-columns. Comparisons are made with predicted beam-columns strengths using the existing codes, such as LRFD-AISC-1999, AIJ-1997, BS5400-1979 and EC4-1994.

This paper is concerned with the influence of changes in stochastic parameters of the important resistance variables such as the strength modelling parameter and material and geometric properties, on the system safety level of TLP structures. The effect of parameters governing the post-ultimate behaviour is also addressed. An extended incremental load method is employed for the present study, which has been successfully applied to the system reliability analysis of continuous structures. The Hutton Field TLP and its one variant called herein TLP-B, are chosen as TLP models in this paper. The results of several parameteric studies lead to useful conclusions relating to the importance of reducing uncertainties in strength formulae and relating the importance of component post-ultimate behaviour to the systems reliability of such structures.
This paper evaluates the effective width of composite steel beams with precast hollowcore slabs numerically using the finite element method. A parametric study, carried out on 27 beams with different steel cross sections, hollowcore unit depths and spans, is presented. The effective width of the slab is predicted for both the elastic and plastic ranges. 8-node three-dimensional solid elements are used to model the composite beam components. The material non-linearity of all the components is taken into consideration. The non-linear load-slip characteristics of the headed shear stud connectors are included in the analysis. The moment-deflection behaviour of the composite beams, the ultimate moment capacity and the modes of failure are also presented. Finally, the ultimate moment capacity of the beams evaluated using the present FE analysis was compared with the results calculated using the rigid - plastic method.
This paper presents the results of full-scale load tests performed frictional anchors to various lengths at several sites in Korea. Various rock types were tested, ranging from highly weathered shale to sound gneiss. In many tests, rock failure was reached and the ultimate loads were recorded along with observations of the shape and extent of the failure surface. Laboratory tests were also conducted to investigate the influence of the corrosion protection sheath on the bond strength. Based on test results, the main parameters governing the uplift capacity of the rock anchor system were determined. By evaluation of the ultimate uplift capacity of anchor foundations in a wide range of in situ rock masses, rock classification suitable for structural foundation was developed. Finally, a very simple and economical design procedure is proposed for rock anchor foundations subjected to uplift tensile loads.
As concrete wind-turbine towers are increasingly being used in wind-farm construction, there is a growing need to understand the behavior of concrete wind-turbine towers. In particular, experimental evaluations of concrete wind-turbine towers are necessary to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics and load-carrying capacity of such towers. This paper describes a model test of a prestressed concrete wind-turbine tower that examines the dynamic characteristics and load-carrying performance of the tower. Additionally, a numerical model is presented and used to verify the design approach. The test results indicate that the first natural frequency of the prestressed concrete wind turbine tower is 0.395 Hz which lies between frequencies 1P and 3P (0.25-0.51 Hz). The damper ratio is 3.3%. The maximum concrete compression stresses are less than the concrete design compression strength, the maximum tensile stresses are less than zero and the prestressed strand stresses are less than the design strength under both the serviceability and ultimate limit state loads. The maximum displacement of the tower top are 331 mm and 648 mm for the serviceability limit state and ultimate limit state, respectively, which is less than L/100 = 1000 mm. Compared with traditional tall wind-turbine steel towers, the prestressed concrete tower has better material damping properties, potential lower maintenance cost, and lower construction costs. Thus, the prestressed concrete wind-turbine tower could be an innovative engineering solution for multi-megawatt wind turbine towers, in particular those that are taller than 100 m.
As there are so many uncertainties associated with using the determinism analysis method in the design of rubble mound breakwater, it is impossible for a designed construction to provide ultimate stability. First of all, due to the uncertainty of Load and Resistance, a safety level concerning the destruction mode of construction must be given. Then, the optimization design should be processed. After all, we can say that it is a more reasonable design method than the design used by the stability rate. In this study, an established design process is accomplished using Hudson's equation and an economic analysis with the breakwater's section is also conducted. Hudson's equation is compared to Van der Meer's equation. These results are utilized to drop a damage rate, increase the stability of construction, and determine the optimization section of the breakwater.
Large studs were suggested not only for the design of steel-concrete composite bridges with simplified sections but also for the shear connection in precast decks requiring uniform distribution of shear pockets. Based on the push-out test results on studs with diameters of more than 25 mm, partial composite beams with 40%-degree shear connection were fabricated, and static tests were performed. The ultimate strength and horizontal shear load redistribution of partial composite beams, which have parameters of stud shank diameters and distribution, were evaluated, and group failure in the shear span was observed. Since the flexural strength of composite beams are dependent on the strength of their shear connection, the strength of the stud connection was estimated and it showed considerably higher shear strength. From the load-slip curves, the sufficient ductility and load redistribution of large studs were confirmed. Uniformly distributed large studs can provide proper ultimate behavior of composite beams.

Steel-concrete composite beam with profiled steel sheet has gained its popularity in the last two decades. Due to the ageing of these structures, retrofitting in terms of flexural strength is necessary to ensure that the aged structures can carry the increased traffic load throughout their design life. The steel ribs, which presented in the profiled steel deck, limit the use of shear connectors. This leads to a poor degree of composite action between the concrete slab and steel beam compared to the solid slab situation. As a result, the shear connectors that connects the slab and beam will be subjected to higher shear stress which may also require strengthening to increase the load carrying capacity of an existing composite structure. While most of the available studies focus on the strengthening of longitudinal shear and flexural strength separately, the present work investigates the effect of both flexural and longitudinal shear strengthening of steel-concrete composite beam with composite slab in terms of failure modes, ultimate load carrying capacity, ductility, end-slip, strain profile and interface differential strain. The flexural strengthening was conducted using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) or steel plate on the soffit of the steel I-beam, while longitudinal shear capacity was enhanced using post-installed high strength bolts. Moreover, a combination of both the longitudinal shear and flexural strengthening techniques was also implemented (hybrid strengthening). It is concluded that hybrid strengthening improved the ultimate load carrying capacity and reduce slip and interface differential strain that lead to improved composite action. However, hybrid strengthening resulted in brittle failure mode that decreased ductility of the beam.
The driven pile has environmental problems such as vibration and noise. Especially, if the site consists of gravel, cobble and weather rock, the driven pile can not be applied. Therefore, the application of the drilled shafts is increasing in Korea. However, the bearing capacity values by the suggested theoretical formulas are generally considered too conservative. In this paper, static load tests for the rock socketed drilled shaft at Gwangandaero and Suyeong3hogyo are performed and in order to estimate the side friction of the shaft, strain gauges are applied. The bearing capacities from the field test data and the bearing capacity values by the theoretical formula are compared. Even the static load tests didn't reach to the ultimate bearing capacity condition, and all the measured bearing capacity values were higher than those by the theoretical formulas. The field data also showed that the major bearing capacities were not due to end bearings but side friction resistances. Based on the above results, several suggestions are proposed for the drilled shaft design.
To better understand the influence of hollow ratio on the hollow concrete-filled circular steel tubular (H-CFT) stub columns under axial compression and to propose the design formula of ultimate bearing capacity for H-CFT stub columns, 3D finite element analysis and laboratory experiments were completed to obtain the load-deformation curves and the failure modes of H-CFT stub columns. The changes of the confinement effect between core concrete and steel tube with different hollow ratios were discussed based on the finite element results. The result shows that the axial stress of concrete and hoop stress of steel tube in H-CFT stub columns are decreased with the increase of hollow ratio. AfteGr the yield of steel, the reduction rate of longitudinal stress and the increase rate of circumferential stress for the steel tube slowed down. The confinement effect from steel tube on concrete also weakened slowly with the increase of hollow ratio. Based on the limit equilibrium method, a simplified formula of ultimate bearing capacity for the axially loaded H-CFT stub columns was proposed. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with the experimental and numerical results.
