  • In the present study, an integrated framework of geometric modeling, analysis, and design optimization is proposed. Geometric modeling is based on B-spline surface representation. Geometrically-exact shell finite element is implemented in analysis module. Control points of the surface are selected as design variables for optimization, which can make the interaction easier between analysis and surface representation. Sequential linear programming(SLP) is adopted for the shape optimization of surfaces. For the computation of shape sensitivities, semi-analytical method is used. The developed integrated framework should serve as a powerful tool for the geometric modeling, analysis, and shape design of surfaces.

  • The geometric configuration in the weight reduction designis very required to be started from the conceptual design with low cost, high performance and quality. In this point, a structural-topological shape concerned with conceptual design of structure is important. The method used in this paper combines three optimization techniques, where the shape and physical dimensions of the structure and material distribution are hierachically optimized, with the maximum rigidity of structure and lightweight. As the results, the technology of weight reduction design is considered in designs of aluminum control arm and inner panel of door.

  • The systems with probe and SIL(Solid Immersion Lens) mechanisms have been researched as the technology to perform NFR(Near Field Recording). Most of them use the flying head mechanism to accomplish high recording density and fast data transfer rate. In this paper, ABS shape of flying head was optimized with the object of securing the maximum compliance ability of OFH. We suggest low different optimization processes to predict the static flying characteristics for the OFH. Two different approximation methods, regression analysis and back propagation neural network were used. And we compared the result of directly connected(between CAE and optimizer) method and two approximated optimization results. Design Optimization Tool(DOT) and ${\mu}GA$ were used as the optimizers.

  • We conducted a multi-stage optimization to secure the desired performance of a centrifugal fan for home appliance in an early stage of product development. In optimization, the static pressure at the outlet of the fan is chosen as an objective function that is to be maximized, providing the required flow rate at the operating point of the fan. The optimization procedure begins with parameters for an initial baseline fan design. The baseline design is optimized by using a commercial optimization package. Accordingly, the corresponding blade models with a set of geometrical parameters are generated. Flow through a fan is simulated by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A multi-stage optimization scheme is employed to determine the family of optimum values for the parameters, leading to the pressure increase at the outlet of the fan. To validate the numerically obtained optimal design parameters, we fabricated the three types of fans using rapid prototyping and assessed the performance using a fan tester. Experimental results show that the design parameters at each stage satisfy the goal of optimization. The multi-stage optimization process turned out to be a useful tool in the development of a centrifugal fan.

Wing Design Optimization for a Long-Endurance UAV using FSI Analysis and the Kriging Method

  • In this study, wing design optimization for long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is investigated. The fluid-structure integration (FSI) analysis is carried out to simulate the aeroelastic characteristics of a high-aspect ratio wing for a long-endurance UAV. High-fidelity computational codes, FLUENT and DIAMOND/IPSAP, are employed for the loose coupling FSI optimization. In addition, this optimization procedure is improved by adopting the design of experiment (DOE) and Kriging model. A design optimization tool, PIAnO, integrates with an in-house codes, CAE simulation and an optimization process for generating the wing geometry/computational mesh, transferring information, and finding the optimum solution. The goal of this optimization is to find the best high-aspect ratio wing shape that generates minimum drag at a cruise condition of $C_L=1.0$. The result shows that the optimal wing shape produced 5.95 % less drag compared to the initial wing shape.

  • Recently, as the demand for high efficiency, multi function machine tools is increasing, domestic machine tool industries are investing in research and development for precision machine tools with high speed. This trend is closely correlated with the design technique which is necessary to make new type machine tool compatible with new production system. To achieve high precision, high speed machine tools with reduced chatter, it is needed to develop dynamically rigid structure. In this paper, dynamic optimization of machine structure is presented. At this procedure of dynamic design, dynamic compliance is minimized using Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA)

  • In mechanical design, optimization procedures have mostly been implemented solely by CAE codes combined by optimization routine, in which the model is built, analyzed and optimized. In the complex geometries, however, CAD is indispensable tool for the efficient and accurate modeling. This paper presents a method to carry out optimization, in which CAD and CAE are used for modeling and analysis respectively and integrated in an optimization routine. Application Programming Interface (API) function is exploited to automate CAD modeling, which enables direct access to CAD. The advantage of this method is that the user can create very complex object in Parametric and automated way, which is impossible in CAE codes. Unigraphics and ANSYS are adopted as CAD and CAE tools. In ANSYS, automated analysis is done using codes made by a script language, APDL(ANSYS Parametric Design Language). Optimization is conducted by VisualDOC and IDESIGN respectively. As an illustrative example, a mold design problem is studied, which is to minimize temperature deviation over a diagonal line of the surface of the mold in contact with hot glass.

  • Statement of problem: The researches on the influence of design variables on the stress distribution in cortical and trabecular bones and on optimal design for implant system were limited. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the sensitivities of design parameters and to suggest the optimal parameters for designing the onebody type implant system. Material and methods: Stresses arising in the implant system were obtained by finite element analysis using a three dimensional model. An onebody type implant system[Oneplant (Warrantec. Co. Ltd., Korea)] was considered in this study. Vortical load(150 N) was applied on the top of the abutment along the axial direction. The initial design variables set for sensitivity analysis were radius of fixture, numbers of micro thread, numbers of power thread, height of micro thread, future length, tapered angle of future, inclined angle of thread, width of micro thread and width of power thread. The statistical technique of Design of Experiments(DOE) was applied tn the simulation model to deduce effective design parameters on stress distributions in bones. The deduced design parameters were incorporated into a fully automated design tool which is coupled with the finite element analysis and numerical optimization to determine the optimal design parameters. Results: 1. The result of sensitivity analysis showed six design variables - radius of future, tapered angle of fixture, inclined angle of thread, numbers of power thread, numbers of micro thread and height of micro thread - were more influential than the others. 2. The optimal values of design variables can be deduced by coupling finite element analysis (FEA) and design optimization tool(DOT).

  • The goal of multiphase optimization of machine structure is to obtain 1) light weight, 2) statically and dynamically rigid structure. The entire optimization process is carried out in two phases. In the first phase, multiple optimization problem with two objective functions is treated using pareto genetic algorithm. Two objective functions are weight of the structure, and static compliance. In the second phase, maximum receptance is minimized using genetic algorithm. The method is applied to design of quill type machine structure with back column.

  • In this paper, multiphase optimization of machine Tool structure is presented. The final goal is to obtain 1) light weight, 2) statically and dynamically rigid. and 3) thermally stable structure. The entire optimization process is carried out in three phases. In the first phase, multiple static optimization problem with two objective functions is treated using Pareto genetic algorithm. where two objective functions are weight of the structure and static compliance. In the second phase, maximum receptance is minimized using simple genetic algorithm. And the last phase, thermal deflection to moving heat sources is analyzed using Predictor-Corrector Method. The method is applied to a high speed line center design which takes the shape of back-column structure.
