A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance has been developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) to search for optimized hull form and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. The friction resistance is estimated using the ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line formula and the wave making resistance is evaluated using a potential-flow panel method based on Rankine sources with nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. The geometry of hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches during the optimization process. Using the Series 60 hull ($C_B$ =0.60) as a base hull, the optimization procedure is applied to obtain an optimal hull that produces the minimum total resistance for the given constraints. To verify the validity of the result, the original model and the optimized model obtained by the optimization process have been built and tested in a towing tank. It is shown that the optimal hull obtained around $13\%$ reduction in the total resistance and around $40\%$ reduction in the residual resistance at a speed tested compared with that of the original one, demonstrating that the present optimization tool can be effectively used for efficient hull form designs.
Response surface methodology (RSM) is one of popular tools to support a systematic improvement of quality of design in the product and process development stages. It consists of statistical modeling and optimization tools. RSM can be viewed as a knowledge management tool in that it systemizes knowledge about a manufacturing process through a big data analysis on products and processes. The conventional RSM aims to optimize the mean of a response, whereas dual-response surface optimization (DRSO), a special case of RSM, considers not only the mean of a response but also its variability or standard deviation for optimization. Recently, a posterior preference articulation approach receives attention in the DRSO literature. The posterior approach first seeks all (or most) of the nondominated solutions with no articulation of a decision maker (DM)'s preference. The DM then selects the best one from the set of nondominated solutions a posteriori. This method has a strength that the DM can understand the trade-off between the mean and standard deviation well by looking around the nondominated solutions. A posterior method has been proposed for DRSO. It employs an interval selection strategy for the selection step. This strategy has a limitation increasing inefficiency and complexity due to too many iterations when handling a great number (e.g., thousands ~ tens of thousands) of nondominated solutions. In this paper, a TOPSIS-based method is proposed to support a simple and efficient selection of the most preferred solution. The proposed method is illustrated through a typical DRSO problem and compared with the existing posterior method.

The relationship between structural geometry and number of life cycles to failure is investigated to improve the fatigue life of structural components. The linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) approach is integrated with shape optimal design methodology. The primary objective of this study is to decide an optimal shape for enhancing the life of the structure. The results from LEFM analyses are used in the fatigue model to predict the life of the structure before failure is occurred. The shape of the structure is optimized by using the growth strain method. Relevant issues such as problem formulation, finite element modeling are explained. Three design examples are solved, and the results show that, with proper shape changes, the life of structural systems subjected to fatigue loads can be enhanced significantly.
A two-dimensional static biochemical model of lower extremity in the seated posture was developed to assess muscular activities of lower extremity required for a variety of foot pedal operations. We found that the double linear optimization method that has been used for modelling articulated body segments does no predict the forces generated by biarticular muscles reasonably, so the revised double linear optimization scheme was used to consider the synergistic effects of biarticular muscles in our model, assuming that the muscle forces are distributed proportionally based on their physiological cross sectional area. The model incorporated three rigid body se- gments with six muscles to represnet lower extremity. For the model validation, three male subjects performed the experiments in which EMG activities of six lower extremity muscles were measured. Predicted muscle forces were compare with the corresponding EMG amplitudes and it showed no statistical difference. The model being developed can be used to design and assess pedal and foot-related tool design.

Generally, the commercial truck has the hydraulic cab tilting system which absorb the vibrations and impacts of the cab. The cab tilting system is equipped for the maintenance and inspection of truck. And it is very important to help user's feeling of driving and convenience. But when the truck cab is tilted, existing model has serious problem of vibration. To satisfy customer's requirements for convenience, it is necessary to improve the hydraulic truck cab tilting system. In this study, the optimization of cab tilting system is carried out by using the G.A to reduce the vibration. The results show that the vibration is reduced and the mean velocity of tilting is improved. In conclusion the improved cab tilting system can be designed and the possibility of optimal design for cab tilting system by using the GA is testified.

Fruit harvesting robots should have more diversity and flexibility in the working conditions and environments than industrial robots. This paper presents an efficient optimization algorithm for redundant manipulators to avoid obstacles using dynamic performance criteria, while the optimization schemes of the previous studies used the performance criteria using kinematic approach. Feasibility and effectiveness of this algorithm were tested through simulations on a 3-degrees-of-freedom manipulator made for this study. Only the position of the end-effector was controlled , which requires only three degrees of freedom. Remaining joints, except for the wrist roll joint, which does not contribute to the end-effector linear velocity, provide two degrees of redundancy. The algorithm was effective to avoid obstacles in the workspace even through the collision occurred in extended workspace, and it was found be to a useful design tool which gives more flexibility to design conditions nd to find the mechanical constraints for fruit harvesting robots.

This paper has focused on the optimization of the cutting parameters for turning operation based on the Taguchi method. Four cutting parameters, namely, cutting speed, feed, depth of cut and nose radius are optimized with consideration of the surface roughness. The design and analysis of experiments are conducted to study the performance characteristic. The effects of these parameters on the surface roughness have been investigated using the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, analysis of variance (ANOVA). The experiments have been peformed using coated tungsten carbide inserts without any cutting fluid. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
This paper describes an efficient optimal design method for an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) having MMI coupler with flattened transfer function. The objective function is the norm of the difference between calculated and target spectra. To analyze the AWG transfer function, the Fresnel-Kirchhof diffraction formula was employed and the design variable was optical path difference of each array waveguide. The (1+1) Evolution Strategy was applied to an eight-channel coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) AWG as the optimization tool. For obtaining a broadened spectrum, we use a MMI coupler and the variation in optical path difference at each array waveguide changes the shape of the transfer function to obtain the optimal spectrum shape.
Because the reheating furnace consumes a large amount of energy to heat up the slabs, it is very important to find an optimal temperature patterns in the furnace for energy saving as well as uniform target temperature at the exit of the furnace. In this study, the temperature profiles in the slab are determined by solving the transient one-dimensional heat conduction equation in conjunction with boundary conditions with total heat exchange factors. The optimal temperature patterns are obtained to minimize the fuel consumption with satisfying the predetermined constraint conditions. The design optimization is performed by using a genetic algorithm and the optimal results are validated with results obtained from the PIDO tool, called as P.I.A.n.O.

Korean government is trying to adopt 'CM at Risk(CMR)' method to solve some problems of traditional project delivery method such as cost increase, delay, low quality. Pre-construction service(PCS) is a project management methodology of CMR and BIM is the best tool for efficient PCS execution. PCS is consisted of several main items such as Target costing, Cost trending, GMP, Design optimization, Constructability review and Productivity. The purpose of this research is to analyse contractor's PCS application case result and to find improvement items.
