In order to prevent machine tool feed slide system from transient vibrations during operations, machine tool designers usually adopt some typical design solutions; box-in-box typed feed slides, optimizing moving body for minimum weight and dynamic compliance, and so on. Despite all efforts for optimizing design, a feed drive system may experience severe transient vibrations during high-speed operation if its feed rate control is unsuitable. A rough feed rate curve having discontinuity in its acceleration profile causes a serious vibration problem in the feed slides system. This paper presents a feed rate optimization of a ball screw driven machine tool feed slide system for its minimum vibration. Firstly, a ball screw feed drive system was mathematically modeled as a 6-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter system. Next, a feed rate optimization of the system was carried out for minimum vibrations. The main idea of the feed rate optimization is to find out the most appropriate smooth acceleration profile with jerk continuity. A genetic algorithm was used in this feed rate optimization
The need for high-strength, multi-axis, and multi-functional machine tools has recently increased because of part complexity and workpiece strength. However, most of the machine tool manufacturers rely on experience for a detailed design because of the shortcomings in the existing design technology. This study uses a topology optimization method to more effectively design a large multi-functional machine tool considering static stiffness. The ram, saddle, and column parts are important structures in a machine tool. Hence, they are selected for the finite element method analysis. Based on this analysis, the optimized internal rib structure for those parts is designed for desirable rigidity and weight. This structure could possibly provide the required design technology for machine tool manufacturers.
The design of press bonding tool in LCD module equipment is a very complex and difficult task because many design able variables are involved while their effects are not known. It takes longtime experiments and much expenses to verify the effects of these design variables. However the optimization of bonding tool using OLB(outer lead bonding) and PCB Bonding is a very important problem in LCD manufacturing process, so much design efforts have been made for improving the bonding tool performance. In this paper, a reasonable and fast process which gives optimized solution under the design requirements has been presented. Both analytical and statistical methods are employed in this process. A reliable analytic model using experiment-oriented FE analysis can be obtained, in which the regression equations that predict the tool efficiency from various DOE method are found. Improvement of tool efficiency could be estimated by the regression equations using meaningful factors converged by RSM(Response Surface Method). With this process a reasonable optimized solution that meets a variety of design requirements can be easily obtained.
To achieve high precision cutting as well as production capability in the machine tool, it is needed to develop excellent rigidity statically, dynamically and thermally as well. In order to predict the qualitative behavior of a machine tool, simultaneous analysis of mechanics and heat transfer is required. Generally, machine tool designers have solved designing problems based on partial estimation of the specified rigidity. This study clears the inter-relationship between therm, and propose multi-phase optimization of machine tool structure using a genetic algorithm. The multi-phase solution method is consists of a series of mechanical design problem. At this first phase of static design problem, multi-objective optimization for the purpose of minimization of the total weight and static compliance minimization is solved using the Pareto Genetic Algorithm.
In this paper, an effective design procedure was proposed to design the rib of die structure for auto-body member with ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) having ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1.5 GPa. From analysis results of the die structure, structural safety of the die was evaluated with information such as displacement and von-Mises stress. It was concluded that the casting part could be designed in order to reduce tool deformation. A design guideline of the die structure was proposed, especially for the rib structure in the casting part with an optimization scheme and local reinforcement concept. Simulation result following the design guideline fully explained that stability of the tool structure could be obtained simultaneously with weight minimization.
This paper presents a multi-step structural design optimization method fur machine tool structures using a genetic algorithm with dynamic penalty. The first step is a sectional topology optimization, which is to determine the best sectional construction that minimize the structural weight and the compliance responses subjected to some constraints. The second step is a static design optimization, in which the weight and the static compliance response are minimized under some dimensional and safety constraints. The third step is a dynamic design optimization, where the weight static compliance, and dynamic compliance of the structure are minimized under the same constraints. The proposed design method was examined on the 10-bar truss problem of topology and sizing optimization. And the results showed that our solution is better than or just about the same as the best one of the previous researches. Furthermore, we applied this method to the topology and sizing optimization of a crossbeam slider for a high-speed machining center. The topology optimization result gives the best desirable cross-section shape whose weight was reduced by 38.8% than the original configuration. The subsequent static and dynamic design optimization reduced the weight, static and dynamic compliances by 5.7 %, 2.1% and 19.1% respectively from the topology-optimized model. The examples demonstrated the feasibility of the suggested design optimization method.
Mass reduction of the machine tool movable parts is a tool for achieving lower energy demands of the machine tool operation. The realization of lightweight design in machine tool can be achieved by structural lightweight design and material lightweight design. In this study, topology optimization strategy was applied to design optimized structures of movable parts of 5 axis machining center. The weight of ram which has most significant influence on the stiffness of whole machine tool was reduced without stiffness deterioration. The redesigned optimized ram has 24.2% less weight while maintaining the same displacement caused by cutting force.
The paper presents an optimization system which integrates a parametric design tool, 3D diffraction-radiation analysis and hydrodynamic performance assessment based on short and long term wave statistics. Controlled by formal optimization strategies the system is able to design offshore structure hulls with superior seakeeping qualities. The parametric modeling tool enables the designer to specify the geometric characteristics of the design from displacement over principal dimensions down to local shape properties. The computer generates the hull form and passes it on to the hydrodynamic analysis, which computes response amplitude operators (RAOs) for forces and motions. Combining the RAOs with short and long-term wave statistics provides a realistic assessment of the quality of the design. The optimization algorithm changes selected shape parameters in order to minimize forces and motions, thus increasing availability and safety of the system. Constraints ensure that only feasible designs with sufficient stability in operation and survival condition are generated. As an example the optimization study of a semisubmersible is discussed. It illustrates how offshore structures can be optimized for a specific target area of operation.
This paper presents the results of miniaturized micro milling machine tool development for micro precision machining process. Finite element analysis has been performed to know the relationship between design dimensional variables and structural stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, thermal aspects. Design optimization has been performed to optimize the design variables of micro machine tool to minimize the volume, weight and deformation of machine tool structure and to maximize the stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, and thermal characteristics. This study presents the assessment of the technology incentive for the minimization of machine tool in the quantitative context of static, dynamic stiffness, thermal resistance and thus the accuracy implications.
The size and topology of geometrically nonlinear dome structures are optimized thereby minimizing both its entire weight & joint (node) displacements and maximizing load-carrying capacity. Design constraints are implemented from provisions of American Petroleum Institute specification (API RP2A-LRFD). In accordance with the proposed design constraints, the member responses computed by use of arc-length technique as a nonlinear structural analysis method are checked at each load increment. Thus, a penalization process utilized for inclusion of unfeasible designations to genetic search is correspondingly neglected. In order to solve this complex design optimization problem with multiple objective functions, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II) approach is employed as a multi-objective optimization tool. Furthermore, the flexibility of proposed optimization is enhanced thereby integrating an automatic dome generating tool. Thus, it is possible to generate three distinct sphere-shaped dome configurations with varying topologies. It is demonstrated that the inclusion of brace (diagonal) members into the geometrical configuration of dome structure provides a weight-saving dome designation with higher load-carrying capacity. The proposed optimization approach is recommended for the design optimization of geometrically nonlinear dome structures.
