Effectiveness of Worksite Intervention on Stress Management: An Analytic Literature Review

  • With growing significance of psychological well-being in the worksite, the purpose of this analysis was to overview the empirical studies on worksite stress management and to identity the overall effect of worksite health promotion programs on stress management through meta-analysis. Literature retrieval was conducted on-line first in MEDLINE, EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier, and PSYCHINFO databases in public health, psychology, sociology, and human resource management areas. All studies written in English and published in the peer-reviewed journals during 1990 and 2002 were recruited. Key words used in literature retrieval were 'worksite,' 'intervention,' 'program,' 'work stress,' 'strain,' 'burnout,' 'management,' 'prevention,' 'education,' and 'health promotion.' A total of 18 worksite intervention studies with 48 effect sizes were analyzed and the results were as follows. Approximately 60% of the studies had quasi-experimental design and were conducted in manufacturing company and public sector. General psychological strains and burnout were frequently used measures of psychological stress. The lecturing and discussion typed intervention and the participatory problem-solving typed intervention were employed more than others in the studies. The average effect (r: pearson's simple correlation coefficient) weighted by sampling error was -0.14 (-0.32 to 0.05). In the conventional category of effects this is a small effect ranging from -0.59 to 0.05. Binomial effect size showed that success rates increased from 43% without intervention to 57% after an intervention. Sampling error explained 47.14% of the observed variance and its effectiveness on stress management were heterogeneous. In regression analysis with suspected moderating factors affecting the worksite interventions, research design was the only significant moderating factor. The studies with quasi-experimental design had greater effects than the studies with experimental design.

Trends of Research on the Case Management of Medicaid Beneficiaries in Korea (의료급여 사례관리 관련 국내 연구동향)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to understand the trend in research by analyzing previous studies related to the case management of Medicaid and to explore the direction of future research. Methods: Thirty three studies conducted from January 2003 to June 2015 were analyzed according to characteristics of researchers and subjects, research methods, measurable variables, and key words. Results: Of the studies analyzed, 69.7% were conducted on Medicaid beneficiaries, and 65.6% were conducted on the group of high risk for over medical utilization. The mainly used research design was a survey study design, which was 51.5% of them, followed by experimental (24.2%), and qualitative (12.1%) study design. Most frequently measured variables were medical utilization (62.5%), needs for case management (41.7%), and health status (25.0%). The topics most frequently studied were related to medical utilization, effect of case management, self-care, and program development in Medicaid beneficiaries and job and socio-psychological factors in case managers. Conclusion: The future direction of nursing research in Medicaid case management is to be vitalized through the expansion of the research population, and concretization and diversification of the research topics. In addition, conduct of further studies on intervention strategies and contents for improving quality of case management program is also needed.

A Study on the Effect of PMO Involvement on Project Performance (PMO의 관여도가 프로젝트성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose This study is based on previous studies related to the function and operating system of the project management system for efficient project management. The purpose of the study is, first, to find out how the project performance is affected by the utilization of the project management system and the involvement of the PMO. Second, the mediating effect of implementing integrated management between the project management system and project performance is to be demonstrated. Design/methodology/approach Based on previous studies related to project management, this study designed a research model by integrating functional factors derived from project management system design studies, integrated management factors, and factors derived from PMO function studies. Findings As a result of the empirical analysis, this study first confirmed that high utilization of the project management system and high involvement of the PMO are factors that affect project performance. In addition, it was confirmed that the establishment of the system and the introduction of PMO do not guarantee project performance. Second, it was confirmed that the execution of integrated management has a mediating effect between the system and the project performance, and that the high utilization of the system has a positive effect on the mediating effect.
