  • The development history, the current situation and the future of the performance-based seismic design of building structures in China are presented in this paper. Firstly, the evolution of performance-based seismic design of building structures specified in the Chinese codes for seismic design of buildings of the edition 1974, 1978, 1989, 2001 and 2010 are introduced and compared. Secondly, in two parts, this paper details the provisions of performance-based seismic design in different Chinese codes. The first part is about the "Code for Seismic Design of Buildings" (GB50011) (edition 1989, 2001 and 2010) and "Technical Specification for Concrete Structures of Tall Building", which presents the concepts and methods of performance-based seismic design adopted in Chinese codes; The second part is about "Management Provisions for Seismic Design of Outof-codes High-rise Building Structures" and "Guidelines for Seismic Design of Out-of-codes High-rise Building Structures", which concludes the performance-based seismic design requirements for high-rise building structures over the relevant codes in China. Finally, according to those mentioned above, this paper pointed out the imperfections of current performance-based seismic design in China and proposed the possible direction for further improvement.

  • Seven transmembrane receptors (7TMRs), also known as G protein-coupled receptors, are popular targets of drug development, particularly 7TMR systems that are activated by peptide ligands. Although many pharmaceutical drugs have been discovered via conventional bulk analysis techniques the increasing availability of structural and evolutionary data are facilitating change to rational, targeted drug design. This article discusses the appeal of neuropeptide-7TMR systems as drug targets and provides an overview of concepts in the evolution of vertebrate genomes and gene families. Subsequently, methods that use evolutionary concepts and comparative analysis techniques to aid in gene discovery, gene function identification, and novel drug design are provided along with case study examples.

  • The Honam region has played an important role in the development of Korea poetry. So this study focuses on Song Soon among various factors of Honam architecture in 16th century. He was ahead of his times in development of Korean literature, and made buildings that become background and materials of his literature. Song Soon built Myonang-jong in Damyang for his life time and tried to design to pull in nature into his buildings. These buildings were built in beautiful landscape, and showed elegance as a retired scholar and Taoism characteristics. He provided basic ideas, that is, pulling in nature into architecture, and metaphysics morality, and his ideas also influenced Honam School Including Jung Chul. This study looks into Nujung architecture that had become materials of Myonang-jong Song Soon literature and characteristics of Honam architecture through his buildings at the same time.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find out the identity and succession of traditional Hanok villages by analyzing the location, layout, and spatial organization of neo-Hanok Village, which was built in Korea. So far, neo-Hanok Village has not prepared a specific institutional mechanism despite the government's support and growing public interest. In addition, the purpose of neo-Hanok Village has not been verified, even though it was built all over the country for the purpose of the dignity and succession of the traditional Hanok Village. This study examines how the spatial organization elements of the traditional Hanok Village are planned according to the design principles of the old literature and applies them to the neo-Hanok Village to determine the succession of the traditional Hanok Village.

  • As the response spectrum method generally used in the earthquake resistant design is a linear method, the nonlinear behavior of a structure is to be reflected with a specific factor. Such factors are provided in the "Design Criteria for Roadwaybridges"as response modification factors and in the Eurocode 8, Part 2 as behavior factors. In this study a 5-span steel box bridge with single column piers is selected and the behavior factor is determined. The linear time history analyses are carried out with a simple linear model, where the nonlinear behavior of piers leading to the ductile failure mechanism is considered as predetermined characteristic curves.

  • Due to few earthquakes in our country, one generally has thought to be safe from earthquakes. However, severe earthquakes occurred in Dangsan and Hyogohyeon which one had regarded as the zone that had not been risky for earthquakes, so that so many people died and a lot of buildings and bridges were destroyed. This event surprised our country and we undertook preparation for earthquakes on the full scale. The concept of seismic design was induced in the country which was poor in it for the scarcity of recognition and insufficiency of funds. Recently, many specialists are enforcing the provisions of seismic design. Therefore, this study introduces the method which combines PC-LEADeR( design program for L.R.B.) with LUSAS(linear elastic analysis) and performs the seismic isolation design more elaborately and simply. It verifies the propriety of that method, and it also examine the factors that affect the response of the bridges. Seismic isolation design for bridge using L.R.B. provides both economical efficiency and superior seismic performance. Second, the results between by the method proposed and by time history analysis have 20% error at the maximum. That is, the method proposed very appropriate.

  • In order to improve the wind performance of buckling-restrained braces (BRBs), Hybrid buckling-restrained braces (H-BRBs) have been studied in Korea. The seismic performance of H-BRBs is different according to the action of VE damper. In this study, the nonlinear time history analyses have been performed on the parameters such as brace types and input earthquakes. The results of the study suggest that H-BRBs meet the BRB's requirement of ANSI/AISC 341-10 only if VE damper is not working during an earthquake.

  • Recently, high-rise building structures connected by a sky-bridge are frequently constructed. To predict accurate dynamic responses of structures connected a sky-bridge, time history analysis is required. Repetitive analyses are required in the design process. If the entire structure model is employed in the repetitive time history analysis, it would take a lot of computational time and engineers' efforts. Therefore, an equivalent model for high-rise building structures connected by a sky-bridge was proposed in this study. The proposed model consists of cantilever having original structure's stiffnesses and masses. Based on the analytical results, it has been shown that the equivalent model can reduce the analysis time and provide similar seismic responses to the original model.

  • Now, the goal of the third generation KTX project is to create a new species of high speed train in order to open a new era of high speed railway system in history by authentic Korean technology and innovative design. Now the third generation KTX, must go beyond the original stagnant paradigm and be positioned as an emotional resource which is creating a shift in the public's perspective of transportation and expanding the idea that transportation intersects the two distinct realms of culture and environment as well. In addition, the overall design should reflect the Korean culture and characteristics, simple yet resonant, both the interior space and the exterior fuselage should portray the dynamic heritage of Korea such as the powerful yet subdued energy of Jung Joong Dong. In short, through the symbolic key words in Korean, Dong(Dynamics), Mek(Pulse), Ryu(Flow), Gam(Sensibility), the third generation KTX design project aims to create an new identity of Korean high speed railway which can stand globally.
