  • In recent years, much research work has been performed on durability design and long-term performance of concrete structures in marine environments. In particular, the development of new procedures for probability-based durability design has been shown to provide a more realistic basis for the analysis. This approach has been successfully applied to several new concrete structures, where requirements for a more controlled durability and service life have been specified. For reinforced concrete structures in a marine environment, it is commonly assumed that the dominant degradation mechanism is the corrosion of the reinforcement due to the presence of chlorides. The design approach is based on the verification of durability limit states, examples of which are: depassivation of reinforcement, cracking and spalling due to corrosion, and collapse due to cross section loss of reinforcement. With this design approach the probability of failure can be determined as a function of time. In the present paper, a probability-based durability performance analysis is used in order to demonstrate the importance of the durability design approach of concrete structures in marine environments. In addition, the sensitivity of the various durability parameters affecting and controlling the durability of concrete structures in a marine environment is studied. Results show that the potential of this approach to assist durability design decisions making process is great. Based the crucial information generated, it is possible to prolong the service life of structures while simultaneously optimizing the final design solution.

  • The design, development and deployment of Mobile Agent (MA) systems for high-level inference and surveillance in wireless sensor networks and RFID systems have drawn increasing attention in the past decade. To answer how the state-of-the-art of MA in a wide range of ubiquitous and sensor environments is, this paper investigates the current progress of MA. It proposes a taxonomy, by which MA systems in ubiquitous computing environments are decomposed and discussed. Then, this paper provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of existing efforts. Finally, it presents a series of solutions from the viewpoint of various roles of MA in ubiquitous environments and situations.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of exterior environments and to identify the design guidelines for the therapeutic garden for cognitively impaired seniors with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The data was collected from 4 Adult Day Care Centers, 2 Nursing Homes, & 1 Assisted living in the U.S.A. from 2001 to 2002 by interview and the floor plan about the outdoor space. Although some may believe that patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders are unresponsive to environment, evidence shows that environments especially designed for cognitively impaired seniors can maintain or increase their level of functioning. The use of specially designed exterior environments nay have in reducing incidents of aggressive behavior, and contributing significantly to a wanderer management program. The checklist includes 6 dimensions: safety environment, various sensual stimulations, social interactions, wandering, privacy, and support orientation and reality. The results indicated that the exterior environment have to support wandering behavior, orientation and reality.

  • Airborne microorganisms, termed bioaerosols, are etiological agents of many respiratory and skin diseases. There are high demands of controlling the concentration of bioaerosols, specifically in indoor environments. Here, a new system for controlling indoor bioaerosols is designed and evaluated. An idea of a short time exposure to a thermal energy is used in the design of the equipment. The system was tested in laboratory environments. The experimental results show that the new system can reduce the concentration of viable bioaerosols of indoor laboratory environments.

  • For high performance Grid environments, an efficient GIS(Grid Information Service is required In the Metacomputing Directory Service(MDS) of the Glogus middleware, the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol(LDAP), which is a distributed directory service protocol, is used. The LDAP GIS differs from general purpose LDAP directories in that most of the LDAP operations are write in Grid environments. To get an efficient design of the GIS, it is thus required to analyze the performance of the LDAP system in the context of Grid environments. This paper presents the result of a performance analysis of LDAP systems. The main objective of the evaluation is to see the performance scalability of the LDAP system in the Grid environment where the write operations prevails. Based on these results, we suggest directions of an efficient LDAP-based GIS for a high performance Grid.

  • Recently, as the number of entities participating in the Grid system increased, the response time of LDAP system became inadequate. Consequently, we have to design new LDAP that suitable for high performance Grid environments. For this, researches about analysis of performance LDAP system are needed firstly. However, because researches are focused mostly on read operation optimized environments, so these result of researches are not directly applied to high performance Grid environments that write operation occupies most. In this paper, we provide overall results of analysis of performance of distributed directory system. The analysis is based on an analytic performance model by applying the M/M/1 queuing model. Finally, based on the results, we suggest the direction for the design of high performance LDAP system and this research results can be applied as basic materials to design of GIS in high performance Grid environments as well as.

  • Many libraries have recently become enlarged and industrialized. Spaces dedicated to natural environments and climates in libraries have been isolated, and spaces that take natural environments into consideration have only recently started to receive attention. People all around the world enjoy reading books in nature. Reading is interpreted as the same context as the desire to go somewhere higher. Contemporary people have discovered ways to enjoy reading books along with nature by establishing bookshelves in mountains, forests, or green fields. These people have created libraries that place nature as the protagonist. In spatial terms, natural environments mainly encompass scientific and systemic concepts and embrace a sentimental approach to the natural environments of local areas not previously considered. The purpose of this research study is to present the direction for spatial planning that harmonizes nature with space, and to propose the spatial planning of a "small library" by applying natural environmental characteristics.

  • In this paper, the aerodynamic shape of air intake was investigated for the efficient cooling of electronic equipments in aircraft pod. As a first step, ESDU method was applied for the basic shape design of air intake considering the operational environments. The second step was to confirm the performance on design point, so the internal flow field of air intake was analyzed using a commercial Navier-Stokes code(FLUENT). And also the aerodynamic characteristics of internal flow at off-design condition was investigated with the variations of airflow rate. The results show that the air intake meets the requirement of target performance under the mission environments.

  • The present asylums are reported to be hurting the privacy and self-reliance of the individuals by the uniformed manugerial regulations and fragmentary service. Due to the poor linkage of service and uneven quality between facilities, when a person falls into a serious disease he should bear the inconvenience of moving to other facility for the treatment. This study is to investigate the types and pater of welfare facilities for the aged where they can be provided with flexible service in the continuous living environments and to suggest the ideal environments for them to stand on their own feet by assisting properly both in physically and mentally keeping their privacy and sociality.
