  • Flexibility has become a key objectives in the design of manufacturing systems and a critical measure of total manufacturing performance. The need for flexibility is increasing due to some environmental change such as changing technical characteristics of the products and the changing nature of market demands. Most importantly, flexibility embodies competitive value for a manufacturer. Although the importance of flexibility has stressed in the various research, very few attempts have been made to synthesize the literature dealing with definitions and measure of flexibility. It is this issue that have motivated us to search for the definition and classification of flexibility.

  • For efficient mechanical system optimization, a new two-point approximation method is presented. Unlike the conventional two-point approximation methods such as TPEA, TANA, TANA-1, TANA-2 and TANA-3, this introduces the shifting level into each exponential intervening variable to avoid the lack of definition of the conventional exponential intervening variables due to zero-or negative-valued design variables. Then a new quadratic approximation whose Hessian matrix has only diagonal elements of different values is proposed in terms of these shifted exponential intervening variables. These diagonal elements are determined in a closed form that corrects the typical error in the approximate gradient of the TANA series due to the lack of definition of exponential type intervening variables and their incomplete second-order terms. Also, a correction coefficient is multiplied to the pre-determined quadratic term to match the value of approximate function with that of the previous point. Finally, in order to show the numerical performance of the proposed method, a sequential approximate optimizer is developed and applied to solve six typical design problems. These optimization results are compared with those of TANA-3. These comparisons show that the proposed method gives more efficient and reliable results than TANA-3.

  • Problem definition is as important as problem solving in decision making. Decision makers, however, tend to see problem partly or to define it unclearly. The researchers on decision making tend to lay a focus only on the Process of solving the given problem. This dissertation empirically studied the Problem diagnosis and definition in the decision making process. This study developed three kinds of DSS(Decision Support System) for the research and analyzed the effectiveness of the problem diagnosis and definition using DSS developed in this study. The three kinds of DSS are K-T(Kennel and Tregoe) DSS which is a method of table-styled information Presentation, and F-N(Fact-Net) DSS and C-E(Cause and Effect) DSS which are methods of graphic-styled information presentation. The empirical study was conducted twice; the pilot test and the main test. The samples of experiment are 218 students for the pilot test and 259 students for the main test. The author used K-T DSS and F-N DSS for the pilot test, and the revised K-T DSS and C-E DSS for the main test. A questionnaire survey method was included in the main test process The result of the study shows that the group using DSS in problem diagnosis and definition is more effective than the group not using DSS. A table-styled information presentation DSS, K-T, turns out more effective than a graphic-styled information presentation DSS, F-N, K-T DSS and C-E DSS showed no significant differences in the effectiveness in the main test. These results indicate that the use of DSS in the stage of problem diagnosis and definition is very effective and the methods and types of system design are a significant factors for DSS development.

  • The early-phase naval ship design demands requirements synthesis rather than design synthesis, which conducts engineering design for several domains on a detailed level. Requirements synthesis focuses on creating a balanced set of required operational capabilities satisfying user's needs and concept of operations. Requirements are evolved from capability based languages to function based language by statistical exploration and engineering design which are derived in the following order: concept alternative, concept baseline, initial baseline and functional baseline. The early-phase naval ship design process can be divided into three passes: concept definition, concept exploration and concept development. Main activities and outcomes in each pass are shortly presented. Concept definition is the first important step that produces a concept baseline through extensive design space exploration promptly. Design space exploration applies a statistical approach to explore design trends of existing ships and produce feasible design range corresponding to concept alternative. It further helps naval systems engineers and operational researchers by inducing useful responses to user and stakeholders' questions at a sufficient degree of confidence and success in the very early ship design. The focus of this paper is on the flow of design space exploration, and its application to a high-speed patrol craft. The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors, and do not reflect the official policy or rule of the Navy.

  • In this paper, we describe the design and the implementation of word clustering system using a definition of an entry word in the dictionary, called a dictionary definition. Generally word clustering needs various features like words and the performance of a system for the word clustering depends on using some kinds of features. Dictionary definition describes the meaning of an entry in detail, but words in the dictionary definition are implicative or abstractive, and then its length is not long. The word clustering using only features extracted from the dictionary definition results in a lots of small-size clusters. In order to make large-size clusters and improve the performance, we need to transform the features into more general words with keeping the original meaning of the dictionary definition as intact as possible. In this paper, we propose two methods for extending the dictionary definition using ontology. One is to extend the dictionary definition to parent words on the ontology and the other is to extend the dictionary definition to some words in fixed depth from the root of the ontology. Through our experiments, we have observed that the proposed systems outperform that without extending features, and the latter's extending method overtakes the former's extending method in performance. We have also observed that verbs are very useful in extending features in the case of word clustering.
