  • The retaining wall structure is essential for construction work that performs underground excavation. Displacement management of the retaining wall structure is important regardless of the size of the construction. However, in the case of small-scale construction sites with an excavation depth of less than 10m, displacement management of retaining wall structure not properly performed due to problems such as 1) companies' smallness, 2) lack of capacity of construction managers, 3) complexity of installation, dismantling and displacement of measuring instruments. As a result of analyzing previous research, it was analyzed that it is difficult to apply this to a small - scale construction site because most of the previous research has problems in using an expensive 3D scanner or installing many measuring instruments. This study aims to propose a conceptual design of a displacement measurement system for retaining wall structure based on laser sensor and to verify the displacement recognition performance of core technology applied to the conceptual design. A conceptual design was proposed using a 2D laser scanner. As a result of verifying the displacement recognition of the 2D laser scanner, a displacement of 15mm was analyzed to be sufficiently understandable. In the future, if the proposed conceptual design is developed and applied to the small-scale construction site, it is thought that it will contribute to the reduction of safety accidents at small-scale construction sites.

  • Recently, many Korean construction companies have tried to modify organization structures in order to increase the performance profit while coping with environmental changes in the construction market. Most Korean construction companies are adapting to environmental changes and devote various struggle for maximizing the result of receiving order. Especially, the organization structure of Marketing Divisions is the important for management performance and is the important key elements to attain the management goals. This research on construction companies organization has never been dealt before in korea. Through this research, the relationship between construction environmental changes and management performance profit is proven and is reflected when making the Marketing Divisions. It suggests the Marketing Divisions structure model by business type and receiving order type. Also, the result of this research could be used the important basic data that is necessary to the organization model development and this model development can be prepared for facing the new environmental changes in the near future.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the development direction and performance analysis of design review system in design-build project. As a result of surveys, the fairness and transparency of design review system was abruptly increased. But local government has not fairness and transparency. Therefore this research has proposed the integration management and joint application of design review organization in design-build project. So, we expect that the transparency is raised in management of design review committee.

  • Ground and rock mass considered in tunnelling have characteristics such as uncertainty, heterogeneity and structural complexity because they have been formed undergoing various geological events for a long period. So, it is difficult for engineers to predict behaviors of rock mass in tunneling. In the paper the authors describe the development of an integrated expert system prototype for site investigation, design and construction in tunnelling and introduce the case applying this system to the tunnel construction site under construction. Geostructure Research Group in Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) has developed the system during the past 4 years. The system mainly consists of several modules which is related to the design, construction and management of tunnelling. The test site, Neung-dong tunnel is located in Ulsan, Korea. The geology map shows it may confront big fault zone whose width is over kilometres. With the networking system of ITIS, various information of face mapping, monitoring and other construction task can be transmitted into the database and GIS Server at real time. And necessary analyses can be carried out with the modules equipped in the system.

  • The purpose of this study is to embody the integrated working management system for public works, focused on the management of surplus soil at a field of public works. The contents and results of this study can be classified into the design of working management DB for public works and the embodiment of working management DB. First, the design of working management DB for public works consists of three DBs - process management to analyze work plan and performance. for backhoe loader, working management and resources management for equipment and labor management - in connection with work and resources classification system. Secondly, the working management system for public works can describe work plan and performance on a floor plan using graphic. Based on this, the status of process and progress report with visual expression had been developed to facilitate the communications and performance of duties among staff in charge at the field of public works. This study is a specialized system for a company specializing in public works and a system that can be put into practical use if practicality is proved through test-bed with regard to business.

  • The severe acute respiratory syndrome -SARS virus spreaded rapidly in Asia in 2003 caused a lethal and serious epidemic. Establishing special isolation wards of high-level epidemic prevention has becomes one of the most important tasks of epidemic prevention. Taking the biosafety level of US CDC biology laboratory as an example, the laboratory of the highest level, BL4 and that of the second high level, BL3 are only allowed to handle and research this kind of highly dangerous viruses safely, to ensure the safety of researchers and the surrounding environment. This research aims to study the functions and the design requirements of "special isolation wards", which is equivalent to the high-level biotechnology laboratory, and have an integrated discussion about the design and construction techniques of this kind of wards, expecting to provide a reference for constructing special isolation wards and maintaining operation safely in Taiwan.

  • Project leadership lifts management to a new level where projects are seen as strategic weapons that help firms to develop competitiveness. For too long, the focus on projects has been on short-term, tool-oriented management. There is a need for fresh understanding of project leadership and appreciation of its importance. A state-of-the-art review of research on leadership in project management is presented. Results of an aspect of a global study on leadership in the construction industry are discussed. The need for project managers to be effectively developed as leaders is underscored.

  • Traditional project management theory is based on a three-dimensional life cycle approach where the project managerseeks to optimize the dimensions of cost-schedule-technical (quality or design). This paper reports the findings of a case study analysis of two complex mega-projects in Michigan which confirm the findings of previous research and illustrates the use of a framework for five-dimensional project management (5DPM) that is for conceptualizing a complex project's scope of work. The framework elevates the recognition that the project's social/political context and the financial arrangements create complexity adding two new dimensions. This paper also demonstrates a methodology to graphically display a project's complexity to better understand and prioritize the available resources. The result is a "complexity footprint" that may help a complex project manager identify the boundary between controllable and uncontrollable projects impacts. The paper finds that applying 5DPM to the two case study projects has given the project delivery team a tool which is actually adding value to the complex project management process.

  • Excavation works of cylindrical shafts and tunnels for the construction of a variety of infrastructures have been frequently going on in the urban areas. When ground excavations of cylindrical shafts and shallow tunnels proceed in the ground condition of high water level and silt particle component, ground water drawdown involving soil particle migration causes loosening of ground around tunnels and shafts, causes settlement and deformation of ground. Damages due to ground sinking and differential settlement can occur in the adjacent ground and structures. The extent and possibility of damage relevant to ground water drawdown and soil particle migration can't be so precisely expected in advance that we will face terrible damages in case of minor carefulness. This paper introduces two examples of construction management where using incremental deformation graph of inclinometer, we noticed the possibility of soil migration due to ground water drawdown in the excavation process of vertical shaft and shallow tunnel, analysed a series of measurement data in coupled connection, properly prepared countermeasures, so came into safe and successful completion of excavation work without terrible damages. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

  • A construction temporary work is main process and importance trade section. A technology system of construction temporary has very low availability of field works and needs improvements in Korea as construction site has a quick response about new requirements. This study reviews literature researches and can verify that changes to a comprehensive technology system for construction site. In addition, it suggests a breakdown structure of new standards for temporary construction technology based on views of construction site managers. Meanwhile, temporary construction technology in Korea has changed with a specification of construction temporary work which had been revised in 2014. However, the revision is merely dividing the design and building off of construction temporary technology. It is lacking in many ways to change this in a new standard system for temporary construction technology. Henceforth, it needs to develop a standard system for temporary construction technology and a professional system that is appropriate for different purposes by detail trade sections.
