  • The purpose of this study is to find out the factors that explain the sense of touch and preference of man-made leather. Date base of descriptors for man-made leather was collected by interviewing 50 consumers, 33 different kinds of commercial man-made leathers(synthetic leather and artificial leather) were assessed subjectively by 605 consumers using the 9-point scale of 34 pairs of bipolar descriptors based on the data base. Subjective ratings were analyzed by principal axis factoring with varimax rota-tion. The sense of touch of man-made leather is explained by five factors ; surface property stretchiness thickness& weight thermal property(warmth & coolness) and moisture property (sticky & clingy). The difference in the sense of touch of man-made leathers is mainly attributable to surface property and stretchiness. And the preference of man-made leathers is mainly attributable to surface property and stretchiness. And the preference of man-made leather is explained by three factors ; surface property stretchiness and quality. Higher preference is found in man-mad leather of better quality touch and softness.

  • The surface morphology of oil-lubricated surface for hydraulic piston motor is believed to be extremely effective in contact mechanics. adhesion. friction and wear. In order to describe morphology of various rubbed surface on driving condition, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions in oil-lubricated system. And fractal descriptors was applied to rubbed surface of hydraulic members with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze surface structure are fractal dimension. Surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. Morphology of rubbed surface can be effectively obtained by fractal dimension.

  • Relationship between hydrophobicity of dyes and affinity onto pure polypropylene fibers has been analyzed by using the molecular descriptor as a method to predict chemical and physical characteristics of compounds. Hydrophobicity of newly synthesized red dyes calculated by LogP which is one of molecular descriptors was increased continuously as the length of alkyl substituents increased. The dyeability onto polypropylene fibers was increased as LogP of the dyes increased and was very high when the hydrophobicity is over 6.

  • Query-by-example (QBE) is a well-known method for image retrieval. In reality, however, an example image to be used for the query is rarely available. Therefore, it is often necessary to find a good example image to be used for the query before applying the QBE method. Query-by-layout (QBL) is our proposal for that purpose. In particular, we make use of the visual descriptors such as the edge histogram descriptor (EHD) and the color layout descriptor (CLD) in MPEG-7. Since image features of the CLD and the EHD can be localized in terms of a$4{\times}4$ sub-image, we can specify image features such as color and edge distribution on each sub-image separately for image retrieval without a query image. Experimental results show that the proposed query method can be used to retrieve a good image as a starting point for further QBE-based image retrieval.

  • Dioxins refer to a family of chemicals comprising 75 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and 135 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furan (PCDF) congeners, which may cause skin disorder, human immune system disruption, birth defects, severe hormonal imbalance, and cancer. The effects of exposure of dioxin-like compounds such as PCBs are mediated by binding to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), which is a ligand-activated transcription factor. To grasp physicochemical factors affecting human toxicity of dioxins, six geometrical and topological indices, eleven thermodynamic variables, and quantum mechanical descriptors including ESP (electrostatic potential) were analyzed using QSAR and semi-empirical AM1 method. Planar dioxins with high lipophilicity and large surface tension show the probability that negative electrostatic potential in the lateral oxygen may make hydrogen bonding with DNA bases to be a carcinogen.

  • Detecting human in images is a challenging task owing to their variable appearance and the wide range of poses the they can adopt. The first need is a robust feature set that allows the human form to be discriminated cleanly, even in cluttered background under difficult illumination. A large number of vision application rely on matching keypoints across images. These days, the deployment of vision algorithms on smart phones and embedded device with low memory and computation complexity has even upped the ante: the goal is to make descriptors faster compute, more compact while remaining robust scale, rotation and noise. In this paper we focus on improving the speed of pedestrian(walking person) detection using Histogram of Oriented Gradient(HOG) descriptors provide excellent performance and tracking using kalman filter.

  • In order to analyze numerically the hydrophobicity of the new dyes synthesized for unmodified pure polypropylene fibers, the octanol-water partition coefficient (logP), which is one of molecular descriptors representing hydrophobicity of organic compounds, was obtained by a semi-empirical method using Chem3D software. For the dyes of higher logP than around 5, the affinity of the dyes towards unmodified polypropylene fiber was substantial. In contrast to the new dyes for polypropylene, conventional disperse dyes have logP values lower than 5 and exhibited poor affinity.

  • When we search database with a query image, the retrieval efficiency will vary from each kind of descriptor. Even the best representative descriptor, it results a few useless images that don't match with query image. This type of error can be reduced by adopting another descriptor which extracts features in different way. At present, the choice of descriptors is base on intuitive and experimental method. By theoretic accessing to the problem of descriptor choice, we can solve the given problem in the objective and rational way. In this study, we intend to make a composite of descriptors that can reduce retrieval error by adopting principal component analysis.

  • A linear quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model is presented for the prediction of rejection in permeation through membrane. The model was produced by using the multiple linear regression (MLR) technique on the database consisting of retention data of 25 pesticides in 4 different membrane separation experiments. Among the 3224 different physicochemical, topological and structural descriptors that were considered as inputs to the model only 50 were selected using several criteria of elimination. The physical meaning of chosen descriptor is discussed in detail. The accuracy of the proposed MLR models is illustrated using the following evaluation techniques: leave-one-out cross validation procedure, leave-many-out cross validation procedure and Y-randomization.
