  • Case hardening behavior of tool steel(SK5) was investigated after YAG laser irradiation. In the case of beam passes, martensite formed in the melt zone and in former pearlite regions of the austenization zone exhibited very high Vickers Hardness values. The molten depth and radius, micro structure, hardness were investigated as a function of defocusing distance, pulse width, and power density.

  • This paper describes the optimization of design variables of SLIM using finite element method and SUMT(Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique). Thrust is taken as an objective function in order to maximize thrust under constant current drive, and seven independent design variables and nine constraints are chosen. As a result, $\tau$/g(pole pitch/airgap) and $\tau$/$d_{AL}$(pole pitch/aluminum depth) of good criteria in SLIM design are determined.

  • Ignition of a reactive solid in a shape of square corner by a hot surface is studied theoretically. Ignition time and the location of ignition point are determined as a function of dimensionless parameters, with the use of the homogeneous model of ignition. The effect of geometry on the ignition of solid fuel results in the local characteristics: the reaction is initiated in a hot point in depth of the substance. It is shown that ignition time is proportional to the dimensionless initial temperature, whereas for the ignition of the semiinfinite body this dependence was quadratic.

  • A simplified equation of depinning fields from notches of ferromagnetic Permalloy nanowires is presented. The derived equation is given in the form of an explicit function of nanowire width and thickness, and notch depth and angle. The equation agrees with all micromagnetic simulation results to an accuracy of ${\pm}$ 0.5 mT.

  • The program which could determine cross-sectional dimensions of the box girder bridge at tile stage of preliminary design was developed using the optimal technique in this study. It could minimize the cost and time required in the design of box girder bridges and the construction with the prestressed precast segmental method. Objective cost function consisted of four independent variables such as widths and depth of the cross-section. The Nelder-Mead method was used to solve the nonconstrained nonlinear problem like this.

  • The effect of gamma-irradiation sterilization on molecular structural changes in orthopaedic surgical-grade polyethylene was studied. The relative crystallinity ud. percent crosslinking of the substance increased as a result of the gamma irradiation and varied anisotropically as a function of depth. Samples from the articulating surfaces showed 5% Venter relative crystallinity than those from the mid-sections, whereas samples from the mid-sections exhibited 15% greater crosslinking than those from the surfaces. These anisotropic variations are discussed in assDciation with oxidation.

  • Surgical anatomy for Asian rhinoplasty Part I reviewed layered anatomy with neurovascular system of the nose. Part II discusses upper two-thirds of nose which consists of nasal bony and cartilaginous structures. Nasal physiology is mentioned briefly since there are several key structures that are important in nasal function. Following Part III will cover lower one-third of nose including in-depth anatomic structures which are important for advanced Asian rhinoplasty.

  • By means of the secondary ion mass spectrometer, the tracer diffusion of oxygen in rutile single crystal was measured as function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The tracer diffusivity was determined from the depth profile of 18O. The Po2 dependence of D suggests that the dominant defects in TiO2-y are oxygen vacancies (V{{{{ { ‥} atop { o} }}) and interstitial titanium ions (Ti{{{{ {‥‥} atop {i} }}). The doubly ionized oxygen vacancies are prominent at low temperature and Po2. However, the tetravalent interstitial titanium ions predominate at teperature above 120$0^{\circ}C$.

  • A numerical method to predict responses of very large floating structures in wave is suggested using source-dipole distribution method. The deflection of the plate is calculated by the finite element method in terms of rigidity matrix of each node. The calculated results for a plate are compared with the experimental ones.

  • By limiting population and land resources, a high-density urban form has become the inevitable choice for central cities in the rapid growth of many large cities in China. Due to the shift in urban growth and focus, high-density urban areas require restoration and improvement. This study intends to combine ancient and new districts, establish strategies for enhancing urban function, spatial utility, industry, and transportation, and thus enhance regional holistic effectiveness, by performing in-depth research.
