The aim of this study was to survey the effects of planned exercise over the age of 65 in male and female with regard to their self-efficacy, depression, and life satisfaction, based on the literatures of 14 master and doctoral dissertations published between 2004 and 2014. The subjects with program exercise habit were chosen considering the generalization of the physical characteristics of elderly subjects. The exercise duration was 50 minutes for 3 times a week for 12 to 24 weeks. Exercise intensity was an optimal aerobic exercise plan that the subjects themselves could perform. The average effect size of self-efficacy was 0.793 (26.1% increased), depression was -0.91(31.9% decreased), and life satisfaction was 1.506 (43.4% increased). These indicate that post-exercise psychological variables had a positive effect on self-efficacy and life satisfaction by lowering depression after regular exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to increase regular exercise participation and to provide sustainable scientific information for the aged and healthy living of the elderly.
This study examined the role of social support and mastery in the effects of hopelessness and depression on suicidal ideation in order to identify elders' suicide and it's related factors. Especially, it focused to find out whether the hopelessness excluding depression has an independent effect on elders' suicidal ideation, and psychosocial factors such as social support and mastery has an interaction effects with elders' hopelessness variables and depression on suicidal ideation. This study recruited 297 elders over 65(older persons in the elder education programs of senior welfare center in Masan, Changwon and Jinhae) and employed a self-administered survey method during January, 2007. The following are the major results of the study. First, the level of hopelessness, depression and suicidal ideation related elders' suicide indicated differences according to their educational level, marital state, income, and their chronical disease numbers. Especially, the lower income and higher chronical disease numbers showed higher level of hopelessness, depression and suicidal ideation among the elder subjects. Second, interaction effects of social support and depression were significant in suicidal ideation, the more level of social support in elder' subjects, the lower the suicidal ideation. While, interaction effects of social support and hopelessness, and mastery and depression/hopelessness in suicidal ideation were not statistically significant. Third, psychosocial factors such as social support and mastery on elders' suicidal ideation have a significant effect when other relevant variables are controlled. From these results, hopelessness is other significant factor predicting suicidal ideation(suicide) among elders. Also, social support and mastery is very significant factor influencing to prevent or decrease suicidal ideation among elders.
Purpose: The O'Leary Symptom Index and Problem Index(ICSI/ICPI) have been used widespread in clinical studies and research. This research was aimed to determine the reliability and validity of the ICSI/ICPI-K that was translated into Korean. Methods: The research design was a methodological study to test the measurements. Subjects were 301 elderly women in Seoul, Chungnam and Gyungbuk. They were recruited through a formal announcement and they responded after informed consent. Data was analyzed with SPSS 15.0. The internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient and the criterion validity was assessed by Pearson correlation with the Geriatric Depression Scale(GDS) and inter-subscales. Results: The elderly women were on average 74.3 years old. As to the reliability of the scale, ICSI/ICPI-K had a Cronbach alpha of .832. In addition, the results showed that ICSI/ICPI-K was valid through the Pearson correlation. That is, the ICSI-K and ICPI-K had a significant relationship with GDS(r=.295; r=.374, respectively) and strong correlations of subscale to subscale(ICSI-K & ICPI-K: r=.676). The most common symptom of the lower urinary tract by the ICSI/ICPI-K was nocturia 249(83.3%) followed by frequency 187(62.8%), urgency 148(49.8%). and pelvic pain 71(23.9%) in the elderly women. Conclusion: We can conclude that the ICSI/ICPI-K is reliable and valid in Korean elderly women. It needs to be evaluated in the clinical area.
Purpose: Through a thorough examination of the CCSC (Community Comprehensive Support Center) system in Japan, this study suggests a scheme to provide community-based preventive health care services for the elderly in Korea. Methods: The study inquired into the applicability of the Japanese model by reviewing the data related to the CCSC project, aided by both in-depth interviews with staff in the field and consultations with specialists. Results: Rearrangement of the Visiting Health Management Project system is needed to manage the collective or individual visiting care management for frailty prevention of the elderly in communities. The delegated service system for preventive care in the community, including direct management by one of the public health centers, also needs to be reviewed and the application of stricter standards for the selection of the agency or corporation to run the delegated service is necessary. Long-Term Care Insurance, along with national and local grants, is to be considered as a financial resource for the community-based preventive health care model for the elderly. By making active use of education rooms at district offices, senior citizen centers in neighborhoods for the elderly with easy access can be created. The project needs to raise active supports from communities, develop programs which can be absorbed into particular local cultures, and promote the understanding of the preventive project in local communities. The preventive program should focus on first solving the problems of depression, seclusion, and lack of mobility of the elderly. Second, the program should instruct physical self-management for exercise-nutrition-dental maintenance, and third, the program should strengthen the cognitive abilities of the elderly. In addition, it is necessary to systematize and implement counter-plans of the family and community to protect the elderly who has mental and cognitive problems. Finally, by establishing a network of public health welfare resources based upon research on a community level, assessment and planning for the health of the elderly should be one with their family, and comprehensive consultation and recommendations should be provided to the family. Conclusion: Taking into consideration the experience Japan has had with respect to a similar project, it is appropriate to develop and implement a service system which would combine the Visiting Health Management Project system which has already been established and a preventive health care model for the elderly on a community level.

This study was conducted with the purpose of identifying the effects of behavioral psychosomatic symptoms, cognitive functions, ability to perform daily life, and depression among the elderly with dementia. The sample for this study comprised 40 people in the experimental group and 20 in the contrastive group from the Dementia Supporting Center, located in NoWon-Gu of Seoul city. Data were collected from November 1, 2016 until March 31, 2017. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0, and descriptive statistics, chi-square test, independent t-test two-way repeated measures ANOVA, and ANCOVA were calculated. An 8-week brain activation intervention program including lectures was administered to elderly people with dementia. The results show improved cognitive function and reduced depressed feelings. Based on the results of this study, brain activation intervention programs can be applied to elderly people with dementia at the community level to help improve their cognitive function and relieve them from depression.
Along with the aging society, the prevalence of dementia is also increasing. Dementia causes short-term memory loss as well as difficulties of performing daily activities and gradually causes suffering of the patients and their family. In spite of various programs for prevention of dementia of older people are being implemented, there is a lack of developing natural-based program for physical and mental health promotion. Therefore, it is necessary to develop programs for the elderly living alone who are more vulnerable to dementia because of their social and economic isolation. The purpose of this study was to develop a natural-based program and investigate the effects of 10 weeks forest therapy program for dementia prevention to improve the psychological and physical health of the elderly living alone. The experimental subjects were 30 elderly (aged 65 or older) and 31 elderly participated in control group. The Stress response, depressive symptoms, weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass and muscle mass were measured for pre and post test. The results showed that the experimental group showed subjective stress relief (t=5.249, p=.000), improvement in symptoms of depression (t=4.152, p=.000), and decreases in weight (t=2.686, p=.012), BMI (t=2.629, p=.014) and fat mass (t=2.918, p=.007) after the forest therapy program. The experimental group showed lower stress reactions(t=-7.185, p=.000) and less depressive symptoms (t=-5.303, p=.000) than control group after participating the program. These results suggest that periodic forest exposure can help having less stressful and depressive status than non-forest exposure and the forest therapy program can reduce participants' psychological and physical risk factors of dementia.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of a local community based multi-factorial program for high-risk younger and older elderly people. Methods: The quasi-experimental research design (pretest-post test) was employed. Participants were recruited in Seoul and a total of 98 elders completed an 8-week multi-factorial program for preventing frailty. Descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test and GLM were used in the data analysis with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: The high-risk elderly people in the younger and older stages showed differences in IADL, TUG and BMI, and after being provided with the multi-factorial program for preventing frailty, some effects were shown on improving the total score of frailty, a physical function, TUG, BMI, depression, subjective feeling of health, and social interaction. Conclusion: The 8-week multi-factorial program for preventing frailty had positive effects on improving physical, emotional and social functions of the high-risk elderly people. It is necessary to evaluate the effects after individual intervention as well as group intervention and to evaluate the effects of the program by setting a control group in the future.
This study examined household food insecurity and the associations of food insecurity with socioeconomic conditions, food behaviors, and nutrient intakes among 458 older adults(mean age=$73.2{\pm}4.5$) from 5 clusters of low-income areas in Seoul, Korea. Using an adapted version of the USDA short form household food insecurity scale, 63.4% of the households were food insecure(40.7% for food insecure without hunger and 22.7% for food insecure with hunger). The proportion of household was lower on the items measured more severe level of food insecurity. Food insecurity was linearly and negatively associated with food expenditure, food secured period and the degree of nutrition management skills, health status and depression. Food secure older adults had mere of energy and other nutrients from animal resources(riboflavin and animal protein, fat and calcium), but less of carbohydrates than those from the food insecure households. These results suggest household food insecurity measures used in this study was valid as well as food insecurity was prevalent and an important indicator of nutrition well-being among low income elderly persons.
The purpose of this study is to provide evidences throught integrative review of non-pharmacological intervention studies for constipation in the elderly in Korea. Through the domestic search engines RISS and KISS, eleven studies were selected by searching for theses and academic journals published in Korea from 2010 to January 2023. According to the study result, relevant studies were 11, and non-pharmacological interventions included abdominal massage, foot massage, acupressure, moxibustion, lifestyle intervention, carbonated water intake, and complex therapy. Constipation, sleep quality, and depression were confirmed as effects of the intervention. However, there is no study confirming the quality of life related to constipation in the elderly, so it is necessary to develop and apply a non-pharmacological intervention program for constipation considering the quality of life of the elderly.
