  • Oxide semiconductor gas sensors are widely used for detecting toxic, explosive, and flammable gases due to their simple structure, cost-effectiveness, and potential integration into compact devices. However, their reliable gas detection is hindered by a longstanding issue known as humidity dependence, wherein the sensor resistance and gas response change significantly in the presence of moisture. This problem has persisted since the inception of oxide semiconductor gas sensors in the 1960s. This paper explores the root causes of humidity dependence in oxide semiconductor gas sensors and presents strategies to address this challenge. Mitigation strategies include functionalizing the gas-sensing material with noble metal/transition metal oxides and rare-earth/rare-earth oxides, as well as implementing a moisture barrier layer to prevent moisture diffusion into the gas-sensing film. Developing oxide semiconductor gas sensors immune to humidity dependence is expected to yield substantial socioeconomic benefits by enabling medical diagnosis, food quality assessment, environmental monitoring, and sensor network establishment.

  • Evaluation of the implementation and performance of a firm's green supply chain management (GSCM) is an ongoing process. Balanced scorecard is a multi-criteria evaluation concept that highlights implementation and performance measures. The literature on the framework is abundant literature but scarce on how to build a hierarchical framework under uncertainty with dependence relations. Hence, this study proposes a hybrid approach, which includes applied interpretive structural modeling to build a hierarchical structure and uses the analytic network process to analyze the dependence relations. Additionally, this study applies the fuzzy set theory to determine linguistic preferences. Twenty dependence criteria are evaluated for a GSCM implemented firm in Taiwan. The result shows that the financial aspect and life cycle assessment are the most important performance and weighted criteria.

  • The thermochemical parameters for safe handling, storage, transport, operation and process design of flammable substances are explosion limit, flash point, autoignition temperatures(AITs), minimum oxygen concentration(MOC), heat of combustion etc.. Also it is necessary to know explosion limit at high temperature and pressure. For the safe handling of benzene, lower explosion limit(LEL) at $25^{\circ}C$, the temperature dependence of the explosion limits and flash point were investigated. And the AITs for benzene were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of benzene recommended 1.3 vol% and 8.0 vol%, respectively. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for benzene, and the experimental AIT of benzene was $583^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of benzene is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • Smokers keep smoking despite knowing that tobacco claims many lives, including their own and others'. What makes it hard for them to quit smoking nonetheless? Tobacco companies insist that smokers choose to smoke, according to their right to self-determination. Moreover, they insist that with motivation and willpower to quit smoking, smokers can easily stop smoking. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to discuss the addictive disease called tobacco use disorder, with an assessment of the addictiveness of tobacco and the reasons why smoking cessation is challenging, based on neuroscientific research. Nicotine that enters the body via smoking is rapidly transmitted to the central nervous system and causes various effects, including an arousal response. The changes in the nicotine receptors in the brain due to continuous smoking lead to addiction symptoms such as tolerance, craving, and withdrawal. Compared with other addictive substances, including alcohol and opioids, tobacco is more likely to cause dependence in smokers, and smokers are less likely to recover from their dependence. Moreover, the thinning of the cerebral cortex and the decrease in cognitive functions that occur with aging accelerate with smoking. Such changes occur in the structure and functions of the brain in proportion to the amount and period of smoking. In particular, abnormalities in the neural circuits that control cognition and decision-making cause loss of the ability to exert self-control and autonomy. This initiates nicotine dependence and the continuation of addictive behaviors. Therefore, smoking is considered to be a behavior that is repeated due to dependence on an addictive substance, nicotine, instead of one's choice by free will.

  • Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependence on software to train control systems. Hence, the safety assurance of the vital software running on the railway system is very critical task and yet, not many works have been done. While much efforts have been reported to improve the safety of electronic hardware, not so much systematic approaches to evaluate the safety of software, especially for the vital software running on board train controllers. In this paper, we propose the guide line of actually applicable software safety assessment in train control systems. And we demonstrate the results of developing a new tool based on web system version for software assessment management.

  • Sound quality engineering in automobile noise applications has become more and more important under the current quiet driving condition that the interior noise level is below 65 dBA, because various noise components masked under high noise level can be audible in quieter driving situation. Many researches have been carried out for subjective and objective assessments on automobile sounds and noises. In particular, the interior sound quality has been one of research fields that can give high-quality feature to automobile products. Although many works related to the interior sound quality have been progressed or completed in foreign countries, limited research results are presented in the country. In the study, as a base step necessary to objective assessments on car interior noises, subjective assessments are performed with 20 subjects. For this purpose, perceptual adjectives suitable to the assessment of acceleration noises are selected as assessment scales through questionnaire procedures using 35 subjects. Mean values and standard deviations are calculated for noises created through digital filtering of acceleration noises measured. In addition, the correlation analysis and the factor analysis are carried out to investigate the dependence of the assessment scales selected.

  • Environmental impact assessment in the step of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) measures relative values of importance or weight of the environmental load characterized in the inventory analysis. The weight measurements are used to evaluate the environmental load or the effect of the industrial product or technology. In this paper the Analytic Network Prpcess (ANP) is introduced to calculate a relative weighting of the environmental impact. The ANP is considered as one of the useful decision making framework and allow for more complex interrelationships, feedback, and inner/outer dependence among the decision level and factors. The weighting from the ANP may applied to obtain the overall evaluation value of environmental load.

  • Cu thin film was deposited by a self-ion assisted beam source (SIAB) and the assessment of the Cu films was given. Some characteristics of the source and the experimental procedure are described at various conditions such as total power, ionization efficiency, and ion current vs. deposition rate. The dependence of crystalline structure, impurity concentration, and resistivity of the Cu films deposited by SIAB on acceleration voltage are discussed.

  • This paper considers a linear regression model with space and time data in where the disturbances follow spatially correlated error components. We provide the best linear unbiased predictor for the one way error components. We provide the best linear unbiased predictor for the one way error component model with spatial autocorrelation. Further, we derive two diagnostic test statistics for the assessment of model specification due to spatial dependence and random effects as an application of the Lagrange Multiplier principle.
