  • The proliferation of digital libraries (DL) in the twenty-first century has revolutionized the way information is generated and disseminated. This has led to various practical and research models of DLs. This paper discusses the concept and development of digital libraries, and examines various components and characteristics of DLs. It further identifies various models and theories of digital libraries with a special focus on the DELOS Reference Model and 5S Theory. The relationship between the two focused frameworks is analyzed for better understanding of their application in the DL universe.

  • This study is on the history of classification in Western library from ancient to Harris(1870), before Dewey. It looks into the classification systems of librarians, bibliographers, booksellers and libraries of that time. One of the earliest was the classification of the clay tablets in the Assyrian library of Assurbanipal. But the earliest recorded system in the papyrus is that which Callimachus(B.C. 310-240) devised for the library at Alexandria. In the medival, the monastry libraries used many classifications. but their libraries were very small. Gesner, Naude, Brunet, Jefferson, Edwards, Harris etc. tried to make a good classification for bibliographies and libraries. Especially Brunet made the scheme based on the French system, and it used on bibliographical classification and shelf classification in the many libraries. In 1859, Edwards made the classification scheme for the public library in the Great Britain. In 1870, Harris made the famous inverted Baconian classification and it strongly influenced the Dewey Decimal Classification.

  • This article examines the utilization of e-resources Modibbo Adama University of Technology, (MAUTech) Yola under the auspices of the central library, the Ibrahim Babangida Library. Academics and students are primary users of information resources of any library, hence, their responses towards the utilization of e-resources in the institution have been critically considered in this study. A Mixed method research Design was adopted for the study. A case study approach was employed. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovation (DoI) theories were used to develop the conceptual framework of this paper. Questionnaires were used as data gathering tools. Academics and students acted as participants. Major findings are lack of sufficient Internet access for academics and students and lack of training and awareness campaigns. Conclusion has shown that e-resources did not impact research and teaching of academics in MAUTech, Yola.

  • It is widely known that the public library in Korea has not been developed as a social agency which makes communication process possible. The public library in Korea just plays a role of the public study room for students using their own books. There is almost no public libraries in the sense of an open collection of comprehensive materials designed for use by anyone who seeks information. This study starts from this situation. It aims at identifying the present stage of the development of public libraries in Korea through investigating librarians' consciousness in their everyday lives. For this, a case study method is used for investingating, collecting and organizing the 'discourse' of librarians in Pusan and Kyongsangnamdo area. Major suggestions include : First of all, it is most important for public library reformation to eradicate the 'conservatism' in the consciousness of librarians in their everyday lives. So, it is essential to collect their life stories in various library conditions, and make them public discourse of librarians. Secondly, the professional organization should play a role to unify the librarians. For this role, it should maintain a R&D department and strengthen PR programs. Thirdly, Researchers who study Library and Information Science in Korea should be always concerned with the real-life context in the field. The most important type of research in our third world situation is the one that is based on the present stage of the development of our own libraries and the real library situation in the field.

  • Exploring research similarity of researchers offers insight on research communities and potential interactions among scholars. While co-authorship is a popular measure for studying research similarity of researchers, it cannot provide insight on authors who have not collaborated yet. In this work, we present novel approach to capture research similarity of authors using citation information. Extensive study is conducted on DATA & KNOWLEDGE ENGINEERING (DKE) publications to demonstrate and compare suggested approach with co-authorship based approach. Analysis result shows that proposed approach distinguishes author relationships that is not shown in co-authorship network.

  • This paper focuses generally on the ‘fourteen principles of management’ by Henri Fayol. However, it specifically analyses their application to and implications for libraries and information centres. An extensive review of published works on management generally, and library management in particular, was conducted. This yielded vital insights on the original meaning and later modifications of these principles, as well as their application in the management of various organisations. Consequently, the strengths and weaknesses of these principles were examined to determine their suitability in libraries and information centres. Inferences, illustrations, and examples were drawn from both developed and developing countries which gives the paper a global perspective. Based on available literature, it was concluded that Fayol’s principles of management are as relevant to libraries as they are in other organisations. The paper, therefore, recommends that in addition to modifying some aspects to make these principles more responsive to the peculiar needs of libraries, further research should be undertaken to expand the breadth of these principles and ascertain their impacts on the management of information organisations.

  • This study reports on early adolescents' health information seeking behaviors that investigated cognitive, affective, and physical aspects of behaviors as they experienced to find information on their needs of health information seeking. In spite of the current widespread internet health information use by adolescents, little research exists to illuminate how they are engaged in cognitive, affective, and physical information behaviors in information search process. Qualitative data were collected through individual interviews informed by Kuhlthau's information search process. Forty adolescents from S city in South Korea participated in the project. Findings report thoughts, feelings, and actions aspects of information search process. This study expects to extend our knowledge of the adolescents' health information seeking behaviors of Kuhlthau's information search process.
